Was the recent India-Australia Series the most exciting and hard fought series of the last decade?

Before the Test Series, Australia were expected to be whitewashed by the Hosts.

First Test, Australia did the unpredictable by defeating India in India and ending their Winning streak. It was a surprise for fans and opponents who had expected India to roll over Australia without mercy. Even the defeat of margin for India was too high. Suddenly, fans realized that the current series against Australia would not be a cakewalk .

Second Test, India were feeling the pressure after a long time and Australians more confident than ever. Australia again performed well by managing to take a first innings lead and were set a manageable target in the 4th Innings. Only an Ashwin special, helped India to come back into the series with a thumping victory.

Third Test, the time to take advantage arrives and India perform well again but heroics from a couple of Aussie batters made sure that the series score remains same going into the final Test. Australia fought well to not lose the match after being in sort of trouble on the last day.

Fourth Test - Comes the decider and as we see, India has gained a massive advantage so far with Australia leading only by 89 runs with only 2 wickets in hand. Its not often do we see a team coming back to win the series after being down, but when it happens it signifies the battle has been well fought.

Series such as this has been rare if we look at past few years records in Tests where the Home Teams continue to win the series without any challebge from the visitors.

Irrespective of the outcome of this series, the emergence of Steven Smith as a dependable Aussie batsman in away conditions has been phenomenal.

Plus, the verbal war between the two teams, especially Kohli and media had it's own share of spice added to the contest.

All in all, this has been a very exciting series with momentum shifting on both sides and no single team was able to win with authority.

Again reinforces the opinion that India-Australian series' always product the best Cricket.

(2016) Pakistan vs England in England was more exciting and competitive for me.

It has certainly been very competitive .
In an era of home.domination its been a breath of fresh air .
Not many expected it to be this close .
The cricket has not been of a very high standard though from both teams.
Australia have done well after failing to win even a session in the UAE.
india have their work cut out on the overseas trips coming up.

For me too Pakistan vs England 2016 was more competitive, still this series has been an outstanding one.

Closely contested? :)))

Australia won the first Test by 300 runs and India should chase this comfortably.

Hell to the no.

Not really.Like other posters I found the Pakistan v England series far more competitive.
Apart from the 2nd test match, all were competitive.

In terms of quality of cricket this would be no where near the top
Pakistan's whitewash of england in 2012 was a much superior contest between two better teams .
Steve o keefe made the 1st test pretty one sided tbh.

Pakistan defending 142 was epic to watch.

The 2012 Pak-Eng was one of my favorite recent series, along with NZ-Aus in 2011.

Hobart was epic.

Some real back to the wall fights. But far too many collapses. So i have to say mediocrity also contributed to this . In some cases pitches played a role. But overall this is a very good series.

What makes a series great isn't just close matches, but also twists and turn. After losing the 1st Test comprehensively, India came back from a losing position in the next two to win and push for a victory in the next two. The performances and application it took (specially from Pujara) to achieve that were truly unreal.

Even in this final Test, India is close to winning by fighting against the odds. The nature of pitch and the toss meant Aussies started as overwhelming favorites, but things don't seem to be going that way now.

Excellent series from a suspense point of view.

Not so much from a quality point of view.

Mediocrity from our side has contributed a lot to making it an exciting series unlike the 2005 Ashes or the 2001 series where both teams went at each other at their absolute best.

Even in 2012 Aus-SA series in Aus was super amazing cos both teams were playing at their very best.

how many match series was in uae pakistan versus australia? and can you please check the records of australia touring india in last 10 years .? we have whitewashed them by 4-0 and many times ...Test were completed in 3-4 days despite australia winning all the tosses in india......south africa, england, newzealand they all get whitewashed here that too in 4-5 match test series.........australia are lucky that kohli and ashwin are way out of form this series and they have won 3 tosses plus its a long home session for india....

First Test was an epic phainty, second was great, the third Test was a complete bore and the 4th was good but is going to have a tame end. A good series overall, but nothing extraordinary aside from Australia's fight in the SC.

No single team had advantage in this series which has been the best thing about it. Even Australia could have gone on to win the series had they capitalized on their advantages.

A whitewash is not competitive, it's like a strong home team beating the tourists without a contest.

The third Test was a complete bore.

Hardly, took an exceptional effort from the Australian batsmen to force a draw.

I think there was even an appreciation thread for Australian batsmen to have managed to survive so many overs and denying the victory to India.

Actually, 3rd Test was the kind of Cricket many would rate extremely high. Those 525 balls faced by Pujara and his partnership with Saha was probably the performance of the series. given it kept India's hopes alive. And then it took great batting from Australia to avoid a defeat. End result may show that it was a tame draw, but there was some exceptional old school Cricket there.

Different strokes for different folks. I found it extremely boring up until the 3rd innings.

We are not talking about previous tours to india
Also australia are not lucky . Its not luck but poor cricket by india to allow o keefe to win a test and maxwell and co to score runs . Australia have been good and the likes of ashwin and kohli poor.
Dont make excuses be more gracious.

One of the best series in recent years when I look at highs and lows for both teams. Pretty much no one expected a series like this by Aus in India. Fantastic to watch with both teams having upper hand multiple times in same test.

Quality of cricket hasn't been that great though.

Pakistan in England 2016 was the best series I have watched in the last decade . .

Great fight between the #1 and the #2 teams for the Mace. World's top rated batsmen (Smith and Pujara) and bowlers (Jadeja, Ashwin and Hazelwood) duking it out. Lots of passion spiced with a touch of drama and controversy. At the end the players can be friends again and play together in the IPL. Cricket doesn't get better than this.

It's been an enjoyable , exciting series because of a super competitive aussie team unlike weak poms and kiwiz. Can they pull off a miracle win tomorrow ?

You don't always have to compare.

I think variety of pitches during this series has surprised everyone in a good way. Throughout the 4 tests there's been something for everyone which is what you want.

Don't think there will be many complaints from the Aussie camp regarding the playing conditions. That satisfies me.

Aus-SA 2012 series comes close though. There were some memorable performances in that series.

In this series, there were some really good match changing partnership by Pujara-Rahane in 2nd test and Marsh-Handscomb in 3rd test but not that great /ATG match turning performance.

Smith and Pujara were fantastic no doubt and so was Jadeja.

Pakistan in England 2016 was one of the best series ever

It's great in terms of upsetting the narrative that the Aussies were going to get hammered a billion to nil but in terms of quality in each individual test, not so much.

Suspense wise yes: quality wise: No One of India's poorest show in a decade

2-2 result between England/Pak last summer was an excellent series and a lot better in terms of entertainment and wrestlemania moments

Also enjoyed SL burying AUS :akhtar SL_Fan

Before the series, even australian supporters predicted 4-0 nil to india..

what happens in the 1st game? India looses by 300 runs. This can't possibly be happening!

2nd game, Australia comfortably outscored india in 1st inning; all odds are against india and despite india comes back and wins the game.

3rd game australia scores 450 and are favorite to win the game; what ahppens? Pujara bats for the day and half and puts india in the front seat. India are favorite to at secure the series and especially after 4 early wickets there is no way they can loose; what happens? Australian middle order shows the maturity not seen since that drawn game from 2005 Ashes and secure the draw

4rth game Aus scores at almost 5 runs an over in the 1st session; all hope is lost for india and they look set to score at least 450. what happens in the 2nd session? chinaman shines india's biggest gamble pays off. Now india are in the front seat when they clears the deficit with 4 wickets remaining. That's when Aussie pace sensation fires off and puts austrlia back into commanding position. Austrlai are now favorite to win since wicket is still good to bat on and india would be playing in last inning. Then...

Can't remember the series where momentum shifts so drastically between each day.

Great post!!

in short..No..one of the best yes but not the best...I prefer the england vs pak series from last year..but there are probably a few better than those that I cant think of right now..

and all the off-field controversy only added more value to the on-field performance. There is a sense of revenge by proving a point from both sides.

Ian Chappell compared this series to the 2005 Ashes. Its nowhere near that.

But it has been a dramatic series in that Australia have competed far more intensely than anyone predicted.

Eng in Pak also had same momentum shifts

But tbf when Pak was going to England most folks expected Pak to compete well but lose overall.

Here everyone thought this will be a massacre

I wonder whether the results would've been more tilted in India's favour had this series not come at the end of a 13 Test summer for them. Can't underestimate fatigue impacting on concentration and energy levels.

There have been quite a few upsets lately:

Pakistan expected to loose in England

South Africa expected to loose in Australia especially after loosing Steyn in the very 1st game and AB not playing at all

Pakistan expected to win in New Zealand

And now this..

One of the reasons I am absolutely pumped about upcoming Ashes. Everyone will be expecting Australia to wipe floor with England but hopefully there will be many many surprises awaiting

Ironically, its the fast bowling of Starc, Yadav and Cummins that has kept me interested. They just ran in and bowled fast and it was a pleasure to watch. Watching Spinners on rank turners is not fun because it becomes too attritional.

The momentum shifts in this series have not seen an equal in the past many years.

But like many posters have noted, it's the lack of quality of different disciplines in different occasions that lead to the momentum being wrested back and forth between the teams. .

I agree with this. Australia have fought really well when they were expected to be whitewashed by some of our overconfident fans and ex players.

Bangladesh-England was a great series too. Both matches were extremely close.

Bang-Eng was a closely contested series, but given that both teams got thrashed by India soon afterwards it cannot be called a great series.

Wow, just wow!

So, a series can be called great or not great on the basis of how two teams perform against India. This is the most delusional post I have ever read on PP.

have not watched all the games, but certainly has been well contested. Even managed an exciting draw in there.

Drop the hype and think about it logically for a moment.

It depends upon what you mean by "great"? You can mean lots of excitement with momentum swings and close finishes. Fine, by that criteria Bang-Eng was a great series.

However, if by "great" you mean the very best in the world fighting hard to overcome the other, then obviously Bang-Eng does not qualify.

There is no such restriction in the OP that you invented.

On the contrary, OP mentions "produce the best cricket" which India-Australia series certainly did not. By that logic, this series also does not qualify.

Your opinion that India-Aus did not produce the very best cricket is subjective. The objective fact is that they are the #1 and #2 ranked teams. If any other team had played them, they would have been thrashed.

Opinions are subjective, ranking is objective. There isn't really much more for me to say.

Whatever helps you sleep at night

Yes, it is the greatest series since Ashes 2006 in which Kohli averaged 9, Warner averaged 24, and Ashwin (barring one inning) has been completely toothless. Only 2 Indian batsmen were able to hit 100s (1 from Pujara and 1 from Saha). The next highest batting average from Australia has been 39.

The poor performance by Kohli, Warner and Ashwin simply point to a superior opposition. A team doesn't play in a vacuum, it always plays against another team. The standard of play is expected to be the highest when #1 plays #2. Some players perform against a superior opposition, others fail for a while.

Definitely passion and excitement was it has been the best. I do no follow test cricket closely often but this series definitely from day 1 has been awesome , the banter - media , cricket boards everything was on point. This is the sort of excitement and passion you need .
Keefe , Yadav , Rahul , Hazelwood , Renshaw - these players emerging out of the shadow of superstars has been riveting to see.

You can look at other way, I'll put it this way both Kohli and Ashwin were flop in this series, but others put their hands up, yadav, jadeja throughout the series, pujara, saha, Rahul, even rahane in second test, the rookie kuldeep did the trick in 1st innings, ashwin too in this innings picked up the trick from Lyon and used overspin, for Aussie's it was Smith by Far, along with renshaw ,handscomb, maxwell, wade and Marsh in patches did well, in bowling hazlewood, Lyon and cummins were sensational, with starc and soki doing well in patches.

Ashes series in 2005 was much better. But this series was enjoyable and competitive. Enjoyed Smith shutting up some critics and Pujars resistance. Cummins and Yadav bowled some good spells.

An enjoyable series.

A batting average of 9 and just 2 centuries from the entire Indian team on home grounds cannot be justified. Both teams played sloppy cricket.

Why do we always get these sort of reactions for anything remotely exciting? This is a very entertaining series for sure and if Australia can give India a scare today, it will be one of the best test series this decade but no, it is not the best. Kohli's misplaced aggression and the DRS ugliness do not do anything positive for this series and two poor pitches in the first two matches doesn't help either.

The rankings are flawed since they do not take into account the huge difference between a home series win and an away series win. If you believe that India would thrash South Africa in South Africa or Australia would thrash Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka, you are the most deluded individual on this forum. Be a little more critical in your thinking rather than taking everything at face value.

This has been pretty good.

But Pak-Eng have also produced some competitive series. From 2012-2016, all three test series were competitive.

Most exciting series - no. Well contested - yes. Most competitive -yes. What really stands out is the quality of bowling and batting, that is head and shoulder above anything I have seen.

Not the best, but certainly better than England vs Pakistan last year. That series ended in Draw. A series where there is a noone comes out as a winner gets forgotten over the one where there is a clear winning and losing side.

I was losing interest in test cricket in last 2 years. This is one series I have followed since first test day 2 regularly.

The number of points where position of favorites to win changed from one team to another has been insane.

3rd test 5th day 2nd session was one of best passes of play in recent times, 2 batsmen stonewalling against a great attack( in the conditions) to save an almost lost test.

Then 2nd test day 3 session 3 where Pujara and Rahane turned the game on its head.

Apart from that off the field drama DRSGate, the unspoken C word, Kohli's send offs and tabloids and former cricketers going on about it, made it even more interesting.

Australians have definitely played better than even they had expected .... so that is a plus for them. But the Indians are just too tough to beat at home at least, and from the looks of things at the end of 3rd day it would be easily 2-1 for the Indians. I guess, no shame for the Australians if that happens. Also, all the side shows that went, really did provide some entertainment and I don't think it will end until the Test is decided ..... hopefully today. So .... yes .... very entertaining set of Test Matches and who can ignore the beauty of Cricket Ground at Dharmasala !!!!

On a side note, is it just a coincidence that Aussies keep getting reviews overturned after one particular incident?

:)

Well, without any help from the Dressing Room now, almost every Australian Review have backfired on them !!!!!!
So that only proves Kohli's point, I mean the Australians looking for help from the Dressing Room ROUTINELY .... until they were caught red handed by the Umpire. The results of reviews from that point on, is there for everyone to see !!!!

Didn't the review that showed Vijay cheating get upheld.

Didn't the review that showed Vijay cheating get upheld.

One of the Australian slip fielder have had exactly same experience !!!!! He did say that fielding that close to the bat
in the slips, he would have claimed it too. It was reviewed, and turned over, and the game went on ... no harm was done. Real cheating happened in the 2nd Test Match ..... I mean Dressing Room and such ..... Hmmmmmm !!!!

Didn't the review that showed Vijay cheating get upheld.

Competitive appeal is one thing and asking for help from dressing room is different. Apples and Oranges. I have to say what Vijay did is wrong.

Claiming a grassed catch and then running off the field only to be called back on the field, don't think I have seen that before, is that normal in Indian cricket then.

Didn't the review that showed Vijay cheating get upheld.

You have lost any little credibility you had. Vijay is not some superhuman who can immediately know if it was a clean catch or not. Even the umpire took some time watching the replays. Only an idiot would not appeal for something like that.

No it is not. It is in Aussie cricket though. I have seen multiple one bounce catches held by Australians being upheld by Aussie umpires.

Claiming a catch during a game is one thing. What you did was pre meditated, planned cheating. If the world was fair your entire team should have been fined for this transgrassion. You were from top to bottom involved in this blatant cheating, players, coaches the whole country. Let us move on.

So why did he run off the field if he did not know if it was a catch or not, cant have it both ways. Look he tried to cheat and got busted, no big deal just apologize man up and get on with it.

I'm surprised you would support cheating.

Nobody with two brain cells tries to cheat claiming a grassed catch. It is easily detected by a review.

Read post #74. I said he was wrong.

Once again what you did was organizational cheating. Top to bottom with intent of defrauding the viewers.

You still dont get it.

Running off the field when taking a greased catch is not claiming the catch then?.
