New Delhi: The reverse swing architect, legendary seamer Wasim Akram hailed cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar as ‘true master of the game’ while in conversation with Gulf News.

The 1992 World Cup winning cricketer was all praise about Master Blaster Tendulkar, “a great guy, a true master of the game. No controversy despite a long career. It has only been cricket for him on and off the field. The best cricketer the world has seen.”

The 51-year-old was at the Sharjah Book Fair, while he lauded Tendulkar as a cricketer and also revealed that Sunil Gavaskar’s wicket will be the most prized scalp in his entire cricketing career.

The former Pakistan captain has eulogized Tendulkar’s talents on previous occasion too. While speaking to Khaleej Times back in 2015, Akram was quoted as saying, “I had the gut feeling that this boy was something special. When he made his debut against us in Pakistan I was stunned by his technique and the way he played, the way he got back to play after being hit on the chin.”

“Apart from the talent, I saw the time he had to play his shots. Eventually he proved me right. He got 100 international hundreds and became the best batsman the world has ever seen, “he added.

Speaking to Gulf News, the Sultan of Swing revealed, “I have bowled at many a great batsmen but my prize wicket will remain as that of Sunil Gavaskar, one of the greatest openers. If anyone is keen to learn proper batting technique, then one should watch Gavaskar who batted without helmet and was always right on top.”

Akram has always been positive about helping fellow cricketers and the legendary bowler reflected his stature as he exclaimed, “I am willing to help anyone. I have given tips to India’s Irfan Pathan, Zaheer Khan and as a sportsman I will help anyone whoever comes to me asking for tips. I don’t care whether he is from Pakistan, India or Bangladesh.

On a concluding note Akram admired Virat Kohli too, “Kohli is the modern great. Thirty two one day hundreds, and that too most of his hundreds in second innings for a winning cause and that shows the greatness of this player.”

Wasim Akram has always had a lot of admiration for India and Indian players. Am I wrong?

Same old story every interview by any media house in India and Wasim says the same things.. Nothing new here should not have been a thread here..

Yes and the love is vice versa... All ex players/current players respect Wasim for his skills and past players are mostly all friends now due to sharing commentary box and even in their playing days they used to go out for dinner after the matches... The punjabi crowd from both sides generally gel together and stayed together..

Then there are few players on both side who hate players from the other side e.g. Kirti Azad, Bishan Singh Bedi, Ashok Malhotra, Javed miandad, Aamir Sohail from Pakistan? Not sure since I don’t watch Pakistani sports channel so can’t be sure of their players but there must be a few who are biased against India...

Both Wasim and Waqar have always rated SRT very high.

Wasim also rates Sunil Gavaskar very high as well.

Sunil Gavaskar was as good as Saeed Anwar but with better defense. Deserves Praise. They don't make batsmen like them anymore.

Tendulkar on the other hand was made for cricket. He was the 'FZR2000' of cricket.

Funny how SRT never made the list of the XI batsmen Akram found difficult to bowl to.

Wasim speaks highly of Alec Stewart the opener, who would stand up and smash him and Waqar with the new ball.

Again Wasim clearly saying he doesn't find Tendulkar 'that difficult' while bowling to..

Sunil Gavaskar is the greatest Indian batsman ever and Wasim accepts that deep down as well, but as usual Wasim is throwing bones at gullible Indians in the form of Sachin/Virat; needs to keep his profile up there in that part of the world so he can exploit those people to make money.

Thanks for sharing with us your personal conversation with Wasim....

" became the best batsman the world has ever seen, “he added.

Wasim and some others get overboard when talk about Indian players, keeping in mind their financial interest, including IPL. Tendulak, no doubt is a legend and one of the best batsmen ever, but not THE best batsman ever, not even in top five. Bradman and Richards and many were way ahead of him.

Bradman may be.Richards was not.

Wasim and Sachin did not play each other in their peak in test matches.. They played in 89 when Sachin just debuted and then for 10 years they didn’t play tests..

Thank you. I am aware!

I guess you missed the point! not sure. I meant IPL carrot was not there back then when he did not name him in the list of difficult batsmen to bowl to. Wasim may not have bowled to Sachin in tests, when he was in his peak, but they sure faced-off numerous times in ODI cricket.

Yes but the batsmen difficult to get out are in tests where you require skills, strategy and patience as a fast bowler.. In ODI’s batsmen give their wicket away on a bad ball also since the game is different..

Ofcourse it might have been due to IPL or before IPL the commentary stints with Espn/star and money involved there but I am just pointing out it might be due to the fact that they never faced each other in their primes in the most difficult formats..

You can’t compare Bradman the batsmen against any modern player he played in a different era and while his batting was out of the world for that era the modern day batsmen are much much more better than him.. Just look at the footage the game evolved too much from Bradman’ s time to now..

Sachin is definitely a top 3 batsmen in all formats combined.. You can have your opinion and it’s subjective to rank top players but most of the cricket following audience all over the world and ex-players rate Sachin as a top contender..

It was indeed there. It was barely 2-3 years ago, and Akram was involved with KKR back then. Neither was Viv Richards in that list.

Please make these 'many' batsmen who were way ahead of him.

Waseem akram has different answers for the same question depending on the newspaper or magazine he is being interviewed on. When he is on game on hai, then viv richards or Brian lara is the best batsmen ever. When he is giving analysis on Aus/NZ, then he picks martin crowe as the best batsman ever. Similar case when interviewed by newspaper that is read by indian dispora, he will say the same thing about gavaskar & tendulkar.

The only time i have taken his praise seriously is when he picked his eleven batsmen for My X1 section back in 2012.n it he goes into detail about why he picked them one by one & what he admires about all of them one by one. Funnily neither Sachin nor Viv richards was in that list. But gavaskar was the first batsmen & the only indian batsmen in his X1, if that matters at all.

So 'many' batsmen were way ahead of him, yet it's him who makes it to those prestigious World XI's rather than those 'many' batsmen.
