"We’ll announce the side tomorrow but Naseem Shah definitely is going to be part of it" : Azhar Ali
Azhar Ali at a press conference:
"A home team has grown up playing cricket in their country, but when you move forward in Test cricket, you need to do well on overseas tours. I think we have the potential in this team to do well in these conditions. In the past also, we have competed and have come into good positions, but then lost matches. It's not that we can't perform, we can, and we can win matches as well. We also have some fresh faces in the team and if they perform to their potential, I don't see any reason why we wouldn't beat Australia here"
"I first saw Naseem Shah bowling in the nets for Central Punjab at GSL, straight away he caught everyone's eye. He was playing junior level matches before so people saw his videos but when we faced him and saw him in the nets, and then played him in the matches, he impressed us straight away. Not just with his pace, but with his skills, temperament and the way he bowls with knowledge. He knows his strengths and reads the batsmen well. At such a tender age, he's impressed a lot, specially in this aspect. Often bowlers have talent at an early age but they can't execute their skills but I've seen him in 4-5 FC games and he keeps getting better and has impressed in every match and practice session"
"We'll announce the side tomorrow"
"We don't believe that (don't have a chance to beat Australia). We've come here with a lot of confidence, we have the talent and potential to do well here. We've done well in patches in previous series, but I think here we have some fresh faces with a new look to the team and we're confident that if we execute our skills, we have huge potential to beat Australia. We have to keep believing and play with no fear. Playing in Australia is always a challenge but when you take on the challenge, it becomes easier"
"Misbah-ul-Haq captained Pakistan for 7 years and was a very successful captain. His thoughts and ideas are very helpful for all of us, specially for me as captain"
"Naseem Shah is very fit, I've captained him in FC cricket and he has overs under his belt. I'm sure he can do that in Tests too, have no doubts about his fitness or bowling skills"
"Babar is one of the top batsmen in the world right now, as a teammate I love watching him bat. In his last few Test series, he's been performing a lot better in Tests, he's a lot more consistent and I think he's ready to take it to the next level"
"Pakistan always produced good fast bowlers but in the last 4-5 years, not many quick bowlers were coming through. To do well specially overseas, you need quick bowlers and we're lucky to have them now. They have a big future ahead of them, this is just the start. When we got them, we were positive that they can perform and do well here"
"You learn with your experience, Yasir Shah has worked on what he lacked last time, he's worked hard on what he needs to do and he's been bowling well and hopefully he can do well"
"We came close to winning a match last time, one of the most exciting Tests I've been a part of. There was such good cricket played by both sides. This ground always brings exciting cricket, if you're willing to take up the challenge you can win games. It's always exciting with a quick pitch, bowlers can enjoy, and also batsmen, if they get it"
"Both teams will try to win, that's how it always is. No one wants to lose. Australia will throw everything at us and we have to answer them"
"We're looking to play Naseem Shah, he's bowling well. We'll announce the side tomorrow, Naseem Shah will definitely be a part of it"
"Not having cricket at home is a big loss for us because kids watch international stars in front of them which we've missed for 10 years. In a month's time, we'll have Test cricket back in Pakistan which will attract youngsters. We haven't played much white-ball cricket in Pakistan either, that has disconnected a lot of international cricket from the young kids"
"If you ask anyone, not many players can reach a standard so early like Naseem Shah, he's one of the exceptions. Hopefully he can have a very succcessful career. He's opening up a little bit now, he was a bit shy when he came into the team, even in FC cricket. Now he's starting to enjoy it. He lost his mother recently so that was hard for him, but he coped with it well and came out to bowl the next day, which was heartening to see"
"A friend of mine had an academy in Lahore, Naseem Shah came to his academy and someone asked my friend to see his bowling. He was in normal shoes, not in spikes, so they watched. First couple of deliveries were quick and they said straightaway that he has potential. In 2-3 years, he's covered that distance towards the level of Test cricket"
