"We have reason to believe that the two players could have, or might damage the league" : N Sethi

Sethi speaking on TV about the Sharjeel Khan and Khalid Latif suspensions:

"When we came here we knew there were bookies in town, our anti-corruption unit was tracking and following them."

"We thought they may get in touch with our players and try to corrupt them."

"We warned the players about these people."

"We have reason to believe these 2 players may have slipped up."

"We have sufficient reason to believe that they could have damaged, or they might damage the league."

"They will be given an opportunity to explain their conduct."

"It's a hard decision but we will not tolerate any act of corruption."

"We had some credible information that things weren't right at the start."

"The league was new last year so there wasn't much interest from bookies but the success of the league has drawn them this year."

"It was inevitable that the success of the league would attract the crooks."

"Players will always be vulnerable where there is big money, greed is instinctive."

and one player has not even played yet.

This part is just him self plugging himself for bringing about the league, in my opinion.

Why is he sprouting all of it in public?????????????? This is madness

Doesn't sound good at all. If found guilty, they should be banned for life from all professional levels of cricket and anyone who advocates against a life ban should be slapped into silence.

The names should have been withheld till they had proved that they were actually involved.

So, that settles it.

Good work there by PCB and Sethi. Zero tolerance policy is the way to go!

Agree this is just ridiculous

I think the whole episode could have been handled better.

First, the commentators announced it on air which got everybody into a panic.

Then Sethi comes on TV to talk about it.

There should have been a press release (not in the middle of a match) and then a presser if he wanted to talk about it.

Doubt anyone will defend them if true.

Exactly and even in the press release they shouldn't have named anyone till it was proved by the inquiry committee. What If they are found not guilty?

Good move by the PCB. I'm also pleasantly surprised how Sethi handled the whole thing on tv without spilling too many beans. Strict action should be taken and an example should be set. I do wonder how much of this is related to players being blackmailed in to something like this.

Well they're apparently sending Sharjeel and Khalid home and when they wouldn't play for IslU then people would have suspected anyway.

Did anybody hear Sethi using the R-word in that interview?

Considering they were sent home, there would have been a lot of rumors. You think a player like Sharjeel being sent home wouldnt give rise to questions?

Why? PCB should be consistent here. If convicted fixers can play at highest level and represent Pakistan then everyone should get the same chance.

True. Didnt know they were being sent home.

Feel bad for Pakistan cricket.

They simply can't catch a break.

Let's see how the investigation pans out.

I think I'm the only one here that thinks Sethi may have jumped the gun here...I think coming down hard on these players was a way of showing the PCB had enough of fixing etc...Just look at how they announced it too, in the middle of a game, on commentary.

That to me was Sethi and co trying to make a point. Maybe they are guilty, but the whole situation comes off abit "better safe than sorry".

The trio got away because at that time there was no law for life ban but this needs to stop now if PCB really want to put an end to this thing!

No law was needed by cricket boards, including PCB, to stop having convicted fixers at highest level. In fact, PCB had gotten rid of fixers earlier without any life ban law.

Anyway, is there a law right now for a life ban by PCB?

There was no law on life bans for Azharudin and Sreesanth, it was completely BCCI's decision

Good move by Sethi to announce this amd make a preemptive strike. Imagine the ruckus if it was annopunced by a 3rd party

It's most likely Sethi trying to act "hard" and taking pre-emptive measures, even before any credible evidence that the duo had actually done something.

They're "now" asking the players to explain something, after announcing live on TV and suspending them.

It's mostly for the public show, I'd be surprised if Sharjeel actually was involved. A contact may be possible, without any promises or intention to do something bad.

But if investigations do find them guilty, strict punishment should be there.

It doesn't sound good. Let's what Latif and Sharjeel have to say. If guilty of any fixing they should be banned for life.

That proved to be a mistake in hindsight. In the future, we should be slap such criminals with lifetime bans.

If found guilty, not only should they do life bans from being involved in any way with the sport but also do half a decade behind the bars. Need to make sure people run away from fixing.

why our players dont learn?? will be big loss if found guilty . specially Sharjeel
idiots .apparently both are good friends .seems both have done something illegal here

We all know how leaky the PCB is.

This would have gotten out to the media quickly, best for the pcb to get there first thing

Funny how those from wealthy, privileged Pakistani households, in a country where bribery and corruption by the wealthy is a part of everyday life, whether it's to bypass normal rules when dealing with officialdom, or getting the police to turn a blind eye, or even getting their offspring into the right schools and colleges ahead of those who merited it more based upon results, are still harping on about retrospectively further punishing a young man, then 18, from a poor background, by banning him for life, when he has already served the original 5 year ban for a one-off act of corruption.

Agree with this, Najam Seth is an attention seeker he just loves being in the spotlight

Yep. Exactly how I feel atm. They may well be guilty, but doing so just shamed them without proper investigations and due process.

Sethi sahab became the judge, jury, executioner.

He himself is quite a corrupt person and I don't believe a word that he says. I'd like to see them convicted a Supreme Court or High Court judge and then I will believe that they have been involved in corruption. Till then it is just he said she said.

Laanat on Sharjeel if he's found guilty.

No sympathies with him whatsoever and he should be punished for life. Absolute idiot.

Having said all that I'm still hoping that somehow he's found innocent.
