What needs to be done to fix the England Test side

OK radical surgery time:

Cook (until Hameed comes good again)
Bairstow (wasted down the order, could be another Gooch)
Root (shorn of the captaincy he wil sort his fifty-and-out problem)
Buttler (genius)
Morgan (captain, and has a test century against A&A so he can do it)
Stokes
Foakes (w)
Plunkett (as quick as Wood and a lot more robust)
Broad
Anderson (replaced by Woakes or Roland-Jones in due course)
Crane (keep picking him until he comes good)

That's a lot more assertive-looking! When we go to SL, drop a quick and bring Moeen back.

Long term I see Buttler as skipper.

I'm not sure I would place Buttler at No.4. I much more prefer him coming in at No.6. Bairstow opening wouldn't do his back good especially if he has to wicketkeep as well. I agree with you on the point about Buttler potentially being a future captain. He would a wise choice after his captaincy exploits with the ODI team. I potentially might want to look at one of the Curran brothers or Woakes as a potential third quick instead of Plunkett who I particularly don't prefer in the team due to him offering just pace. Also in terms of a second spinner I think Jack Leach would probably a better option rather than Moeen who's a better batsman rather than his bowling.

I think that's pretty much spot on. England need a fresh start and in dire need of a new direction. It would be a good idea for them to bring in someone else.

Move Bairstow to 4 and give him the captaincy. The rest will fix itself to however good England can be atm.
