Special message from Imran Khan on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the 1992 World Cup win:

"The Whole MCG was supporting Pakistan and not the England team"

"We have to ask why we couldn't win another 50-over World Cup again; we need to fix our structure to win again"

"I only played the WC so I could collect money for SKMH and the win helped in achieving doing that"

"I am glad my last match was the the one that ended in a victory for Pakistan"

"We never saw such happiness in our country as we saw after 1992 World Cup and I pray we see this again and again in the future"

"Our 1992 World Cup winning team proved that a team cannot be beaten as long as its not mentally beaten"

Absolutely right on all accounts. How we missed out on IK as a cricket admin but then the country gained something from the Cancer Hospital he built.

That's why my admiration and love for Imran Khan will never go away. Of course credit goes to all the team members, but he was THE leader.

I was at MCG two years ago to watch the final, I could not stop thinking about the final played there more than two decade ago.

After so many near misses - going out by losing by one wicket to the West Indies in the inaugural tournament, then reaching the semi-finals in 1979, 1983 and 1987 - to finally win in 1992 was sweet.

1992 was the culmination of several years of quality ODI cricket. For all the hype the Pakistan side of the late 90s received - they never matched the consistency of the Pakistan team of the late 1980s.

We won the Australasia Cup in 1985/86, beat India 5-1 in 1987, the Champions Trophy in 1989/90, the Nehru Cup in 1989/90, beat India again in 1989, won the Australasia Cup again in 1990, whitewashed both New Zealand and West Indies at home in 1990 and won the Wills Trophy in 1990.

Got a bit of luck in the tournament, but that team deserved a World Cup at some stage.

IK has bigger fish to fry at the moment. That being said for the time being the 1992 WC is one of his greatest achievements for the nation.

Quite sad that posters who hate on the man at any given opportunity cannot rise above political differences to appreciate something good that he has done for their nation.

I am sorry but a nation should have better means of getting happy (and as imran has said, most happy) than a cricket match.

Having said that, it was an emotional moment for all the fans here as well. I was only a few months old at that time but have seen the highlights a 100 times since :yk

Its the feel good effect. Economies bounce etc due to that.

Imran is a legendary crickter. He gave so much to Pakistan cricket, not just the World Cup.

Whilst at the time, the triumph in the 1992 World Cup seemed to represent a beginning of a special era, we can now retrospectively see it differently, as representing in fact a denouement of sorts. It was more a culmination than a commencement of an era. Following the victory in 1992, rather than blossoming, Pakistan cricket went through a period of considerable disorder.

Almost paradoxically, the victory and the happiness it aroused, which Imran Khan points to, contributed to what came afterwards. Egos were inflated. And whilst the Government handed out plots of land to the players, they began to believe rather too much into their own stardom.

This seems so average compared to the won that won the WC. It is almost as if the current lot are not even international class when compared to Imran, Wasim and Javed etc.
