Well known personalities infected with Covid-19

LONDON: Indian actresses Sonam Kapoor and Mouni Roy have broken a strict 14-day quarantine law imposed by the UK and could be prosecuted or fined £1,000 for putting other people's lives in danger and setting a bad example by violating the rules.

Sonam Kapoor took to social media and shared her picture working out in central London while Mouni Roy posted a picture having coffee at a cafe in full public view in the British capital.

Both actresses can be reported — and arrested — by the police for breaking the strict laws.

Almost all European Union countries, as well as Australia, Turkey, and several others, are currently exempted from the UK's quarantine rules but countries such as the US, India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan are in the list of quarantine nations.

After spending the entirety of the coronavirus lockdown in India, Sonam Kapoor and her entrepreneur husband, Anand Ahuja, arrived in London less than a week ago, with the actress instantly taking to Instagram to share videos of her arrival.

“London I’m back,” the actor wrote, over a video that showed River Thames from above. “So beautiful,” she added. The actress followed it up with several more videos of herself, including her latest pictures of exercising outdoors.

Bollywood star Mouni Roy — who spent the entirety of the coronavirus lockdown in the United Arab Emirates where she was staying at a friend's residence for four months — reached London four days ago and has not looked back since.

She has told Indian media that she’s in London for a film shooting but, according to the rules, she should have stayed inside for 14 days. On Sunday, she shared photos of herself exercising in a London park.

On the other hand, Pakistani cricket star Waseem Akram arrived in Manchester for work last week but has been in quarantine at his hotel and has not left the building even for a second.

According to the UK government, if a person plans to travel to Britain, they should be prepared to go through a 14-day quarantine period, which has been made mandatory since June 8. If any overseas visitor did not comply, they would have to face a hefty fine of £1,000 or prosecution.

The rule has already been imposed since June 8 and it applies not only to the international visitors but also to British nationals returning home from other countries.

People visiting the UK are under obligation to provide the border control team with all basic information such as their contact details and local address in Britain where they would be in a 14-day self-isolation.

According to the British government, "self-isolating will reduce the chance of a second wave of coronavirus in the UK".

Any individual who is in self-isolation should not have visitors; the only people they may contact would be those with whom they travel or are staying. They cannot go to work or school either, whereas public places are strictly prohibited as well.

Those observing the mandatory quarantine period should avoid going grocery shopping if possible and exercise within the confinement of their homes.

They may only leave their quarantine location if there’s an urgent medical need or they have to purchase basic necessities, such as food and medicines, to attend a funeral of someone close, or in case of an emergency.

Sharon Stone has said her sister and brother-in-law are "fighting for their lives" with coronavirus, blaming "non-mask wearers".

In a series of posts on her Instagram account, the Emmy-winning actress said her sister Kelly is "not doing well".

Sharing pictures of her sister's hospital room, she wrote: "My sister Kelly, who already has lupus, now has COVID-19. This is her hospital room. One of you Non-Mask wearers did this.

"She does not have an immune system. The only place she went was the pharmacy."

The actress also revealed her brother-in-law Bruce was fighting for his life on the same COVID ward.

In a video, the 62-year-old said that the couple had "stayed at home at long as they could", adding: "My sister and her husband are fighting for their lives and my sister is not doing well."

Kelly Stone has posted a number of videos from her hospital bed, including one in which she appeared short of breath as she spoke.

"I beg you to know that this is real," she said.

"I'm gasping for every breath with oxygen. Please do this for the people that you love.

"Stand behind more tests, more masks, demanding everyone wear a mask. You never, ever wanna feel like this, I promise you."

She added that her heart is "breaking for people that can't breathe".

In her most recent post, Kelly said she was not having a good day and felt "very weak", while her husband's fever had also gone up.

Sharon Stone said that in Montana, where the couple live, people cannot get tested unless they are symptomatic - and even then, they don't receive test results for five days.

She also said that the pair's contacts - including her mother, who has had two heart attacks, five stents and a pacemaker within the last five months - are unable to get tested.

The state governor and the health department have not been returning her calls, the actress said.

"This is the state of affairs in the middle of our country, where you, the people in the middle of our country, are at great risk of dying from COVID," she said.

"They keep saying that the risks are so small and you might not die and that it'll be fine but I'm telling you what's going on with my family."

The Basic Instinct actress also said her grandmother and her godmother had died from COVID-19.

She urged people to vote for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris in November's presidential election, citing that countries with female leadership had fared better during the pandemic.

World-record sprinter and eight-time Olympic gold medalist Usain Bolt has tested positive for the coronavirus and is self-isolating at his home in Jamaica after last week celebrating his 34th birthday with a big bash mask-free, confirmed Jamaica’s health ministry late on Monday. One of the people, who according to several media reports, attended Bolt’s birthday was Kings XI Punjab’s Chris Gayle.

If Gayle was tested positive for the novel coronavirus, his chances of travelling to UAE to play for Kings XI Punjab would have been compromised. But, the swashbackling batsman took to social media to announce that he has been tested negative twice.

“Couple days ago. 1st Covid-19 test.. Before travel I need 2 negative test,” Gayle’s Instagram story said. In another post, Gayle wrote, “The last one went a bit too far in my nose. Phew. Result was negative.”

“I’m going to stay home for 2020… not gonna travel again… nah sah! Tan a mi yard!! Keep the change! Excuse me!,” he added.

Meanwhile, Bolt posted a video on social media on Saturday in which he said that he is self-isolating himself at his home, even though he is not showing any symptoms at the moment.

“Good morning everybody I’m confirmed of Covid-19. And also, I am having no symptoms, so I am going to quarantine myself. And will wait and see what is the protocol and how should I go about quarantining myself, from the Ministry of Health.

“Just to be safe, I have quarantined myself, and just to take it easy. Be safe over there. Alright, cool.”

Apart from Gayle, other sportstars who were reportedly attending Bolt’s birthday party include Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling and Bayer Leverkusen’s Leon Bailey.

Silvio Berlusconi's doctor says that the hospitalised former Italian prime minister is responding "optimally" to COVID-19 treatment, but that he belongs to the most vulnerable category of patients and is in "the most delicate phase" of the virus.

Dr Alberto Zangrillo, who is head of intensive care at the San Raffaele hospital in Milan, repeated that he nevertheless remained "cautiously optimistic" about Berlusconi's recovery.

"The patient is responding optimally to treatment," he said. "This doesn't mean we can claim victory because, as you know, he belongs to the most fragile category" given his age.

Udit Narayan says Shravan Rathod called him from Kumbh: 'I thought to myself that during the pandemic, why did he go'

Singer Udit Narayan has talked about how late music composer Shravan Rathod had called him from the Kumbh Mela. Shravan died on Thursday night of Covid-19 complications.

Singer Udit Narayan has talked about his last conversation with music composer Shravan Rathod, who died on Thursday after Covid-19 related complications. Udit said that Shravan had called him from the Kumbh Mela in Haridwar.

Shravan and his wife had gone to participate in the Kumbh Mela and were found positive for Covid-19 upon their return. Their two sons also tested positive. While Shravan died on Thursday, his family is still in the hospital.

Speaking to a leading daily about his call with Shravan, Udit said that he was concerned when Shravan told him about going to the religious gathering amid the pandemic. "Shravan bhai had gone to the Kumbh Mela recently and had called me from there saying, ‘I have come to the Kumbh Mela for the holy bath.’ I told him that he should’ve told me about this earlier and that I could have also gone with him. But after he got off the phone, I thought to myself that during the pandemic, why did he go there? He already had health issues, yet he went there. He did not listen to others and went there, and now he is no longer with us. May his soul rest in peace," he said.

Shravan Rathod was one half of the Nadeem-Shravan music composer duo.

Earlier, in an interview with Indian Express, Shravan's son Sanjeev said, "We had never thought our family would have to go through such tough times, my father passed away, I am Covid positive and so is my mother. My brother is also positive and is in home isolation, but since our father has died, he is being allowed to do the final procedures to do last rites for our father."

Marina Khan is the latest celebrity to have contracted Covid-19. The celebrated star has taken to Instagram and posted a few videos in which she can be seen in high spirits.

"I have Covid-19," the Aulaad actor shared in a video. "This is me, my room and I am all alone for the next 14 days. I fought a lot, my friends would make fun of me now. I always had this idea of if it's meant to happen, it will. We'll deal with it at that time but when it really happens, that's when you realise [that it's very real]."

Khan went on to advise her fans and followers to not pay heed to hearsay and follow the SOPs strictly. "It's very real, it's out there. So far, I have fatigue but it's not as bad as earlier. Fever as well," she added. "Please look after yourselves. I shouldn’t have to dictate the necessary precautions we have to take to avoid Covid-19. I just have one thing to say: it’s Ramazan, it’s almost Eid. The fancy clothes, new clothes aren’t imperative. If you don’t wear new clothes one year, it’s not the end of the world.”

The Lollywood veteran added that the real essence of Eid is to be celebrated with loved ones. “Don’t go shopping in malls. Protect yourselves and others,” she said. “It is not as if it isn’t contagious. It’s everywhere, look around you.”

Khan went onto add how India is still battling the piling cases of Covid-19 in the country. “It’s devastating. I saw a BBC clip and reporting in India about the pandemic and I couldn’t believe it,” she said. “Can we all please pray for them. I have very few followers from the other side of the border but a lot of people who follow me here would have a massive fan following there. Please ask everyone to pray for India.”

In the 1980s and 1990s, Khan was one of the most sought-after stars in the country. She made her debut in a production about Nishan-e-Haider recipient Rashid Minhas and is now a household name.

Her roles in plays such as Tanhaiyan, Dhoop Kinarey and Nijaat highlighted her versatility as she could play a stoic heroine or a giggly prankster with incredible charm with equal ease. Khan was also a popular talk show host.

Previously, stars including Mahira Khan, Ali Rehman Khan, Ali Azmat, Ali Safina and Sanam Jung, alongside her daughter, had also tested positive for the virus.

The Rev Jesse Jackson and his wife, Jacqueline Jackson, remained under doctors’ observation at a Chicago hospital on Monday and were “responding positively to treatments” for Covid-19, their son said.

The couple, who have been married for nearly six decades, were admitted to Northwestern Memorial hospital on Saturday. Physicians were “carefully monitoring their condition” because of their ages, Jonathan Jackson, one of the couple’s five children, said in a statement. Jesse Jackson is 79. Jacqueline Jackson is 77.

“Both are resting comfortably and are responding positively to their treatments,” Jonathan Jackson said. “My family appreciates all of the expressions of concern and prayers that have been offered on their behalf, and we will continue to offer our prayers for your family as well.”

Jesse Jackson, a civil rights leader from Chicago who emerged on the national scene in the 1960s, is vaccinated, having received his first dose in January during a publicised event as he urged others to receive the inoculation as soon as possible.

He has campaigned to improve health outcomes for minority Americans throughout the coronavirus pandemic.

Last April, Jackson asked in a statement: “After 400 years of slavery, segregation and discrimination, why would anybody be shocked that African Americans are dying disproportionately from the coronavirus?”

All past US presidents, he said, had failed to “end the virus of white superiority and fix the multifaceted issues confronting African Americans”.

The next month, he told the Guardian: “We know that people should honour the [social distancing] protocols, but some find it more difficult because of congested conditions or their transportation.

“A lot are untested and uninsured. If you’re uninsured, you can go to the hospitals only to be told you can’t get service, so you end up resorting to your own home remedies, or you end up in the hospital too late.

“That points to disparity in income and education and healthcare. It shows the black condition in America. The legacy of slavery and Jim Crow is very clear.”

The vaccination status of Jacqueline Jackson, who is also an activist, was unclear. Family members said she has an unspecified underlying health condition that triggered concerns.

“We ask that you continue to pray for the full recovery of our parents,” Jonathan Jackson said. “We will continue to update you on a regular basis.”

Jesse Jackson, who has Parkinson’s disease, was hospitalized earlier this year for an unrelated gallbladder surgery.

A mentee of the Rev Martin Luther King, Jackson was crucial in guiding the modern civil rights movement on issues including voting rights. He ran for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1984 and 1988.

Despite his Parkinson’s diagnosis, he has stayed active and continued to travel.

In his Guardian interview last year, he said: “We really must have healthcare for all as one of the by-products of this pandemic. Anybody who’s left out is a threat to those who are left in.

“When people as affluent as Prince Charles and Boris Johnson and athletes are affected, it means that the gated community did not protect you from the pandemic. If the poor are not protected, the rich are in jeopardy, because you cannot separate by community the poor from the rich, the white from the black.”

In recent weeks, Jackson has been arrested for civil disobedience, including last month at a sit-in at the Phoenix office of Democratic US senator Kyrsten Sinema, who has faced pressure over her opposition to ending the filibuster in order to pass voting rights legislation.

Federal Minister for Human Rights Shireen Mazari has been tested positive for Covid-19 amid fears of a fifth wave of the pandemic fuelled by highly contagious Omicron variant.

Express News quoting sources reported on Monday that Mazari has quarantined herself after being tested positive.

Last week, President Arif Alvi was tested positive for Covid-19 once again. "I have tested [posit]+ive for Covid again. Had a sore throat since 4-5 days & was getting better," the president confirmed on the official Twitter handle.

He said that he felt mildly feverish for a few hours two nights ago and had no other symptoms. President Alvi urged people to take precautions and follow the standard operating procedures (SOPs).

In March last year, Alvi and Defence Minister Pervaiz Khattak were infected with the contagious disease.

Planning Minister Asad Umar has warned that the Omicron variant of the coronavirus was spreading rapidly in Pakistan and feared that it would spread even more quickly in days to come.

First discovered in Botswana and South Africa last year, the latest version of the Covid-19 virus —the Omicron variant — has turned out to be highly transmissible and maybe even less receptive to vaccines than previous variants.

Within weeks of its discovery, the WHO issued a warning against describing the Omicron variant as mild, saying it has caused more deaths around the world. Studies conducted to understand the latest form of the coronavirus suggest that vaccinated people are less likely to be seriously ill after catching the infection than previous Covid variants. But data about infection rates from across the world raises the red flag.

The Omicron variant appears to be overtaking Delta in many parts of the world. This week the total Covid cases registered worldwide crossed the 300 million mark, with the Omicron variant setting new infection records in dozens of countries, including the United States and India. The US alone, according to the WHO, the UN's health agency, has recorded millions of new cases over the past few weeks.

Shah Rukh Khan tested positive for COVID-19 on Sunday. Katrina Kaif too tested positive recently, claimed several reports, and had to skip IIFA 2022 ceremony, where her husband, actor Vicky Kaushal, was declared the best actor.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee wished the Bollywood superstar a fast 'recovery'.

"Just came to know that our Brand Ambassador Shahrukh Khan has been detected covid positive. Pray for the fastest recovery for the superstar. Get well Shahrukh! Spring back asap!" Mamata Banerjee tweeted on Sunday.

Several Bollywood actors have tested positive for the virus in recent times, even as Maharashtra is witnessing a sharp rise in infections. On Saturday, Bollywood actor Kartik Aaryan tested positive, just a week after Akshay Kumar announced he cancelled his visit to the India Pavilion at the Cannes Film Festival after he tested positive.

Maharashtra on Sunday reported over 1,400 Covid-19 cases and Mumbai (961 new cases) accounted for almost 60 per cent of the state's total cases.

Maharashtra Minister Aaditya Thackeray asked people to wear masks and not to panic amid the spiralling cases. "There is no need to panic; fatalities are not increasing. I appeal to the public to wear a face mask and receive a booster dose of the COVID-19 vaccine," he said.

Shah Rukh Khan recently announced the teaser of his much-anticipated action-entertainer film 'Jawan'. He also unveiled a poster of the upcoming project on social media.
