"We'll see how far this Pakistan team has come along when they are put under pressure" : Brad Haddin

Rather than lob another personal barb at Mickey Arthur, Brad Haddin has taken aim at his Pakistan team's character ahead of this week's day-night first Test against Australia in Brisbane.

Former national vice-captain Haddin has made no secret of his rocky relationship with his former Australia coach Arthur, who has now taken over the Pakistan reins.

But Haddin was not interested in another slanging match before the Gabba's first pink ball Test starting on Thursday.

Instead he went gunning for the Pakistan team, saying they faced a test of character this summer.

Haddin baulked at Arthur's claim that a new look Australia "aren't as stable" as the touring Pakistani team.

Pakistan are still reeling from a 2-0 result in New Zealand - their first Test series loss to the Black Caps since 1985.

Haddin said he wondered what an Arthur-coached Pakistan team would do when the going got tough in Australia.

"It will be interesting to see how far Pakistan has come when we put them under pressure," he told AAP.

"We know they are good front runners.

"But it will be interesting to see how they go when they are put under pressure and the big moments present themselves.

"That's when we will see how far this team has come along."

However, Haddin bit his tongue when asked about South Africa-born Arthur returning to the Gabba as Pakistan coach after he was unceremoniously dumped by Australia weeks before the 2013 Ashes.

Arthur made his Test debut as Australia's first foreign coach five years ago at the same venue.

"I know where this is heading. Look, it's a great sideshow and makes for great theatre," Haddin said.

The former Test wicketkeeper believed the Australian team would share his tight-lipped approach to Arthur in the dressing room.

"I don't think it will even come up in conversation to be honest," he said of Arthur.

"(Australian captain) Steve Smith has put his own identity on the team - I don't think it will cross anyone's mind."

Haddin believed Australia had "moved forward" with their third Test win over South Africa in Adelaide, snapping a five-game losing run.

Haddin said it was great to see a new look Australia respond after Smith "drew a line in the sand" following their humiliating second Test loss in Hobart.

"They are playing attractive cricket and starting to win games," said Haddin.

"It looks a happy place. I have been impressed with them the last couple of weeks."

Pakistan have lost their last nine Tests in Australia.

They last savoured a Test victory in Australia way back in 1995.

I'll be very happy if we go into the third match with the series still alive

When the likes of Younis at his peak, Yousaf and Inzi struggled in Australian conditions this current lot will collapse like a pack of cards. I will be surprised if we pass 200 in any innings during the coming series.

There is way too much talk before this series. When you consider it is between two teams who have come off significant defeats it is understandable why, but not really pleasant. All of a sudden the PR units of both teams seem to have gone on vacation.

I for one have been wishing the test began on 13th instead of 15th. 2 days of no cricket has been a bit of a drag really.

Ok these comment have awaken my inner Pakistani.

Misbah, Azhar Ali, and Safraz don't hold back against these Aussies. Give them your all with your respective teams. I don't wanna see head less chickens on the field. I wanna to see lions! Never and I repeat never! Give these Aussies any breathing room. Go on a all out attack! Make them shake with your thunderbolts! Make us sing Dil Dil Pakistan.

The england series had the best build up i have ever seen for a Pakistani series (which is not against India).

Agree. And it helped that Pakistan was highly competitive coz the build up starts evaporating if one side keeps getting thrashed.

Case in point the current India - England series has become very monotonous second test onward and I'm looking forward more to the Aus-Pak series.

I'd really want us to really really hand then their royal behinds now!!

OHH HADDIN MATE !!! IT'S FREAKING ON !!!!!!!

BOWL THEM BOUNCERS, SLEDGE THEM !!

I think the dude is still suffering from UAE visit nightmares, and we all saw how good was this mighty aussie team, when they were put under pressure.

Haddin is right. Pakistan after losing a test at home and performing the worst in NZ are under more pressure. A bad past record, aged middle order, and out of form batsmen have definitely put more pressure on Pakistan.

Australia on the other hand have just whitewashed NZ in ODIs. Warner and Smith both scored confidence gaining centuries. Starc and Hazlewood were great too. So, I see no reason why Australia would be under any pressure.

Pakistan have nothing to lose. They can get whitewashed and it won't be any worse a result than their past three tours. However, if Australia lose to Pakistan after losing to Sri Lanka and South Africa...

That's not the right spirit in my opinion. It's Pakistan, not Bangladesh. :shakib

Great opportunity to break an extremely embarrassing streak that is not befitting for any test nation.

Love the subtle dig brother :14: - Encouragement wrapped around banter is certainly the best motivator...

Hope the boys perform better and actually make contributions that help us win !! I'd hate it if players like Azhar and Asad score hundreds there and then the team looses that match due to inability of the remaining XI

That is the right spirit. Play like you have nothing to lose and attack the Aussies head on. They are frail themselves and three well-aimed punches at key spots will put them down for the count.

Sub-continent teams have all been embarrassing in Australia. This team will not embarrass itself any worse which they should take in a positive light.

Cape Town, 2013. What a disappointing defeat.

;-)

I just want a good competitive series ala the one against England. For me, it doesn't matter which team eventually wins.

I am a bit free these day from work (temporarily) and heavily dependent on the upcoming test cricket for entertainment. :D
