Watching the awfully edited NZC highlights but some good bowling from WI.

Question as ever is whether their batsmen can do anything of substance.

kiwi pitches tbf are'nt really the easiest to bat in and even if you bat terribly WI just finds a way to even be more ass like they did in Aus Series even after Seales and Shamar broke through the Aussies multiple times

Yes Hagley Oval is generally a tough pitch to bat on. Definitely one of the bouncier pitches in NZ. West Indies were in with a chance by keeping NZ to under 200, but now NZ might end up with a decent first-innings total
 
Good patnership going on. If they can take a lead, the match can become interesting.

By the way, I really don't rate this Nathan Smith.

NZ in a dominant position as suspected.

By the 3rd Test, WI will be begging for mercy. I hope not but they are just not good enough to play so much Test cricket in away conditions
 
Centuries from Latahm and Rachin has sealed the deal for Kiwis... lead crossed 390 and still 8 wickets left...

Third Test should just be cancelled. There's a reason why since 2018/19 , we have not had a single 3 match Test series that does not involve IND/ENG/AUS.

Their is literally no point in having WI in WTC, literally none.

And tbh, I think Pakistan and Sri lanka should follow suit as well given how non serious they are in test cricket.
 
Would WI get too close and then lose? This test may have an interesting end.

if take it to last 10 overs with 40-50 chase, they might go for it provided no wicket loss
 
Windies have a real chance to create history here.

100 from 20 overs is chaseable, but the approach looks more like they’re settling for a draw.

Pretty sure both teams will shake hands soon.

To win, Greaves would have to do something extraordinary. 2 bad decisions - WI operating with huge breaks
 
Respect for Roach. A true warrior for WI.
Greaves is not the average WI player. Instead of booming with talent, the guy grinds it out and has patience.
 
Record West Indies performance denies New Zealand in Christchurch

Justin Greaves, Shai Hope and Kemar Roach help West Indies post the biggest fourth innings Test total in over 80 years.

An unbeaten double century from Justin Greaves, 140 from Shai Hope and fighting fifty from Kemar Roach has saved the West Indies from defeat in the first Test against New Zealand in Christchurch.

The tourists finished the day at 457/6 to save the Test match, the highest fourth innings total in history outside of the 654/6 England made in famous timeless Test match of 1939 against South Africa in Durban.

The draw also delivers the tourists their first points in the new World Test Championship cycle, after five defeats to begin the campaign.

West Indies began the day at 212/4 in pursuit of 531, with Greaves resuming on 55 and joining Hope who had brought up a century on the evening of day four. The pair put on a further 56, before Hope fell to a short-ball ploy from Jacob Duffy.

Tevin Imlach (6) fell lbw to Zak Foulkes soon after, and brought about the entry of Roach who at first upped the tempo in pursuit of an unlikely victory.

The pair of Roach and Greaves were largely untroubled throughout the middle session, adding 104 runs, though with scoring rate for victory out of the question, the pair pulled the reins back in a bid to prevent defeat.

Fighting cramps and treated multiple times in the last session, Greaves continued to toil, and brought up his first Test double ton with a slash over gully.

A resolute Roach at the other end looked impenetrable, finishing with 58* off 233 balls, after making his first 50 in just 110 deliveries.

Greaves, who claimed Player of the Match honours, paid tribute to his batting partner.

"Kemar, the senior pro, (he) guided me all the way," he said on the television broadcast.

"Coach (Daren Sammy) told me 'once you get in, stay in.'

"To be a part of history is exciting, but for me, it's one day at a time. For us, it was just about getting into the last session - 100 runs in the last session - but losing Shai was a big thing for us."

The teams travel to Wellington for the second Test, beginning on December 10.

It's a very impressive draw despite NZ's depleted attack. I'm not sure if Justin Greaves even had a century in first-class prior to this

Beating Australia in Brisbane in a pink-ball test with such an inexperienced side was very impressive.

I don't think he's that bad. Especially for a team like West Indies where most guys are averaging between 25-30. I have seen him get stuck into the opposition a few times. He has some potential with the bat. Bowling-wise a bowler like that can be useful to give the fast-bowlers a break and keep things tight by bowling disciplined line and length

Brilliant from Windies.

I thought they would go for the win. They needed approximately 132 runs from 33 overs (4 wickets in hand).

They played it safe I guess.
 
Tom Blundell has been ruled out of the second Tegel Test v the West Indies starting tomorrow Wednesday 10 December at the Basin Reserve in Wellington.

Canterbury’s Mitchell Hay is set to be the first wicket-keeper to make a Test debut for New Zealand since 2017.

Speaking on Hay, Walter said.

“Mitch is a young cricketer who’s already contributed well to the white-ball side. He also has an excellent record at First-Class level with Canterbury.

“Having him come into a Test squad is a great moment in his career and we’re really excited to see him play his part.”

Two other potential debutants in Kristian Clarke and Michael Rae have been named in the 14-man squad for the second test.

Speaking on the new bowlers, BLACKCAPS head coach Rob Walter said.

“Kristian and Michael are both identified players of interest with great ability, and have both been good performers for their domestic sides over the past few years.

“They both have good skill with the red-ball, and there’s a great opportunity for them to show that skill for us at the highest level of the game.”

The BLACKCAPS will be bolstered by the return of Glenn Phillips for the second Tegel Test Match at the Basin Reserve in Wellington.

After recovering from a groin injury, Phillips played the first two Plunket Shield fixtures for Otago, scoring 130 runs at an average of 43, and taking nine wickets at an average of 33.

Kyle Jamieson is continuing his red-ball return-to-play plan, playing the recent Plunket Shield match for Canterbury against the Central Stags, and will continue to work closely with BLACKCAPS coaching staff on his return to the Test side.

A playing XI will be announced at the toss at 10:30am on day one of the second Tegel Test Match at the Basin Reserve on Wednesday 10 December.

Modern day Windies generally can't do well back to back.

I expect Kiwis to get a big win here.
