WEST INDIES T20I AND ODI SQUADS ANNOUNCED FOR SRI LANKA TOUR

T20I Squad

The T20I squad will take on Sri Lanka from 10 to 17 October 2024. After a resounding 3-0 series sweep against South Africa earlier this year, the West Indies have climbed the rankings, moving to fourth place, and established themselves as serious contenders on the world stage. Several senior players, including Nicholas Pooran, Andre Russell, Akeal Hosein and Shimron Hetmyer have opted out of the tour for personal reasons, opening the door for newer faces and returning players. Captain Rovman Powell will lead the side, with Roston Chase continuing in his role as Vice-Captain.

Head Coach Daren Sammy, who now leads on selection under the revamped selection system, noted the importance of this series in evaluating players for key roles and understanding the conditions ahead of future ICC Tournaments.

On the T20 squad, Coach Sammy said

“the tour of Sri Lanka gives us a chance to test our depth and assess players in different situations, especially with several senior players missing out for various reasons, including a need for rest and rehabilitation from injury. We are confident in the squad’s ability to compete strongly against Sri Lanka.”

ODI Squad

The ODI squad is set to face Sri Lanka in a three-match series from 20 to 27 October 2024. Shai Hope will continue as Captain, with Vice-Captain support from Alzarri Joseph. This series provides an opportunity for CWI to focus on building its ODI team ahead of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027.

A notable inclusion is Jewel Andrew, the young Antiguan wicketkeeper-batsman who has impressed and earned his place in the squad. The squad also sees the return of several key players, including Brandon King and Sherfane Rutherford.

Head Coach Sammy, remarked on the ODI squad’s balance and potential for growth:

“As we continue to build our ODI team, this tour offers a valuable opportunity to evaluate strategies and give opportunities to emerging talent. We are excited to see young players like Jewel Andrew, who has earned his place as an exciting prospect for the future.”

Since it is T20, West Indies are favorites.

SL would've been favorites had it been a Test series.

Brilliant from King and Lewis. Johnson Charles had a good CPL but looks like he'll be the 3rd choice opener now.

Sri Lanka 179/7

West Indies (19.1/20 overs, T:180) 180/5

West Indies won by 5 wickets (with 5 balls remaining)

Good fightback by SL after that opening partnership. Windies are a strong T20 side. If this was BD or PAK, they would've been blasted away

A breathtaking display of power-hitting from Brandon King and Evin Lewis propelled the West Indies to a commanding five-wicket victory in the first T20 against Sri Lanka on Sunday. The West Indies smashed the target of 180 with five balls in hand, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

The run chase began with fireworks, as the duo amassed 74 runs within a six-over powerplay, putting Sri Lanka on the defensive.

King was the first to reach his half-century, elegantly carving a cover drive for four off Matheesha Pathirana. His 50 came off just 25 balls, while Lewis followed shortly, needing only 27 deliveries for his half-century.

Together, King and Lewis added 107 runs in just nine overs for the opening wicket, seizing control of the game. It was the highest partnership for West Indies against Sri Lanka in T20 cricket for any wicket.

The partnership was eventually broken when Pathirana deceived Lewis with a slower ball, the batsman edging it to Chamindu Wickramasinghe at backward point. King went on to top-score with a blazing 63 off 33 balls, including 11 fours and a six.

With the openers setting up the chase, the middle order merely had to rotate the strike, picking singles and taking calculated risks to seal the win.

Sri Lanka attempted to claw back by picking up a few wickets, but the damage inflicted by the opening pair left the hosts in a near-impossible position. All-rounder Roston Chase and captain Rovman Powell steadied the innings, contributing 32 runs for the fourth wicket.

Powell fell for 13 in the 17th over, mistiming a straight six attempt off Maheesh Theekshana to Wanindu Hasaranga at long-on.

Chase departed for 19, caught behind off Pathirana, but the job was nearly complete. Despite torrential rain threatening to wash out play, the ground staff’s swift efforts allowed the game to proceed after a 30-minute delay.

Lots of assistance for Gudakesh Motie who's varying his pace well and getting turn on a reused pitch.

S Joseph is very green in T20 cricket and released all the pressure in that over.

Ball is turning miles yet WI have played 4 seamers. Even with Motie and Chase, they still look a spinner light.

Better selection of bowlers by SL considering the pitch and format .

SL are building very competent sides for the longer formats.

But the lack of power hitters is holding them back in T20's.

Only better than BD in that department.

A thumping win then for Lanka to level the series! Their spinners have spun a web around the West Indian batters. It was Dunith Wellalage who began things as he got King and after that, wickets just kept falling. Theekshana too joined the party and so did Asalanka and Hasaranga. Matheesha Pathirana also got a wicket to his name at the end. Overall, it was an outstanding performance from the hosts.

For West Indies, they just couldn't cope up with the turn and bounce the Sri Lankan batters were getting. They just never got off the blocks. Just the one batter touched the 20-run mark and that speaks volumes about their struggles with the bat in this game. They were bowled out for their 4th lowest total in T20Is.

Gudakesh Motie starting to produce some useful knocks. He nearly took WI home in a 4th inns chase vs SA in Guyana a few months ago.

SL need 163 to win the series.

WI missing Akeal Hosein who usually bowls in the PP and offers both wickets and control.

SL have taken risks in the PP knowing batting may get harder on this surface. Superb from Nissanka in particular.

Poor bowling by Wl seamers

Haven't bowled good length enough where SL struck only at 33. Everywhere else SL have scored at 175 +

Sri Lanka Triumph In Rain-Affected First ODI Against West Indies

Sri Lanka cruised to a comprehensive five-wicket win in the rain-shortened first one-day international against the West Indies in Pallekele on Sunday, with half-centuries from captain Charith Asalanka and debutant Nishan Madushka. Chasing a revised target of 232 in 37 overs, the hosts raced to victory with 5.3 overs to spare. After a shaky start that saw Sri Lanka slump to 45 for three in the seventh over, Asalanka's arrival at the crease turned the tide. His partnership with Madushka, worth 137 runs for the fourth wicket, came in rapid time.

Both Asalanka and Madushka reached their half-centuries in just 44 balls.

Madushka, who has played 10 Test matches, was brought in to replace injured opener Pathum Nissanka, the leading run scorer in ODIs in 2024.

"I am glad that he has grabbed the opportunity with both hands," Asalanka said. "It is good to have healthy competition in the side."

The West Indies had posted 183 for four in 38.3 overs before rain intervened.

Their spinners then found it hard to grip the wet ball.

"We were really tested by the conditions", West Indies skipper Shai Hope said.

"Particularly for the spinners, the wet ball was quite challenging."

Gudakesh Motie eventually broke the Asalanka-Madushka stand, when Brandon King took a sharp catch at slip.

But by then, the damage had been done.

Sri Lanka needed just 50 runs off 74 balls when Madushka fell for 69 off 54 balls, which included seven fours and a six.

Motie also trapped Asalanka lbw after a brilliant 77 off 71 balls, studded with eight fours and three sixes.

Motie finished with three wickets, although he could have had a greater impact if not for the challenging conditions, with the ball having to be changed twice.

Kamindu Mendis and Janith Liyanage saw Sri Lanka home comfortably.

Earlier, the West Indies had struggled against Sri Lanka's spinners, but Sherfane Rutherford's career-best 74 not out, combined with support from Roston Chase, helped the visitors recover with an unbroken 85-run partnership for the fifth wicket.

However, it was not enough to stop Sri Lanka from taking the lead in the series 1-0.

Sri Lanka came from behind to win the T20 series 2-1 last week, their first series win over the West Indies in the shortest format.

Evin Lewis unbeaten 102 helped Windies win 3rd ODI

Sri Lanka bowled decently but as the game went on, as it got tougher to grip, there were a lot of loose balls dished out. The fielding also didn't help and the dropped catch of Rutherford cost them dearly. They'll be disappointed they could not defend a decent total on a tricky surface.

A fine, fine chase then by the Windies and they avoid a whitewash! It is the comeback man, Lewis and the man in form, Rutherford who do it! They started off cautiously and lost King in the process. Hope and Lewis then built another partnership which laid the platform. Lewis continued and he was the mainstay. Rutherford came out all guns blazing and played the cameo his side needed to round off a very good chase.
