West Indies hopes to break 26-year jinx against Pakistan

Babar Azam stands as the biggest obstacle in the way as Jason Holder’s men target rare ODI series win against the visiting side

It has been more than a quarter of a century since West Indies last defeated Pakistan in a bilateral One-Day International series. Under Richie Richardson in November 1991, the Caribbeans overwhelmed Pakistan 2-0 in the latter’s backyard in a three-match series, the second match in Lahore ending in a tie after Imran Khan, the Pakistan skipper, made a crucial 51.

Jason Holder doesn’t have the same stature as Richardson, but he now finds himself in an excellent position to end that barren run when he leads his side out for the third and final ODI against Sarfraz Ahmed’s team at National Stadium in Providence on Tuesday (April 11). The sides are all square after splitting the first two games, and even though West Indies is without several of its top limited-overs players and Pakistan appears the stronger, more balanced team, one final push could swing the series the home side’s way.

Having mounted its first ever successful chase of over 300 in the first ODI on Friday, West Indies came unstuck in Sunday’s second match after having controlled proceedings for a large part of the Pakistani innings. Put in to bat, Pakistan was in trouble at 128 for 4, and then 183 for 5 towards the end of the 39th over, but Babar Azam then fashioned an inevitable century against his favourite opposition to take the game away from the home side.

Azam has five ODI hundreds now, and four of them have come against West Indies. Holder’s big challenge will be to shackle the Pakistan No. 3 who averages upwards of 95 when he bats at one-drop – where his lowest score is 31 in nine innings, and from where he has all his five tons to date.

West Indies had things in check till such time that Ashley Nurse, the off-spinner, and Devendra Bishoo, the leg-spinner, were in operation. Together, the two spinners combined for 2 for 82 from 20 overs, but when the pacers returned for their final spells, they conceded more runs in the last seven overs – 84 – than the spinners did in their entire complement. That is something Holder would have taken note of. Whether that will encourage him to bolster his spin resources, or to use his bowlers differently, remains to be seen.

West Indies will also expect more from its top order, which was passable in the first game when it overhauled Pakistan’s 308 for 5, but was blown away on Sunday. Through a combination of pace and Mohammad Hafeez’s remodelled off-spin, Pakistan reduced West Indies to 75 for 6 after having ridden on Azam’s unbeaten 125 to post 282 for 5. From thereon, only one team was in the hunt, even though Nurse and Holder, who made an ODI best 68, fought on gamely late in the match.

Hasan Ali was the destroyer-in-chief with 5 for 38, his second five-for in ODIs that saw him bounce back strongly from the battering in the first game, when he went for 43 in his five overs. Hafeez has been economical in both games, but Pakistan hasn’t seen the best yet of Mohammad Amir, the fiery left-arm quick, and Shadab Khan, the leg-spinner who took 10 wickets in the preceding four-match Twenty20 International series which the visiting side won 3-1.

Kamran Akmal has been a mixed bag on his return to the ODI set-up after nearly four years in the wilderness. Pitch-forked to open the batting alongside Ahmed Shehzad, he has come up with scores of 47 and 21 so far. Akmal must be itching to prove a point, having been left out of the Test squad despite amassing a tournament-high 1035 runs in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, Pakistan’s top first-class competition.

There is plenty of depth and quality in the Pakistan line-up, but West Indies will be most wary of the threat Azam’s broad willow poses. If he cane be removed cheaply, it could just be the catalyst West Indies needs to stamp its authority in Sarfraz’s first series as full-time ODI skipper. The teams are also jostling for positions on the ICC ranking table in a bid to qualify directly for the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup – Pakistan is at No. 8, just ahead of its opponent – so there is more than just a series victory at stake.

I wanted to see Zakir and Ashraf, will have to wait though, I would play an unchanged side

Fakhar
Kamran
Babar
Sarfraz
Zakir
Malik
Imad
Shadab
Fahim
Amir
Hasan

play an unchanged side, cannot drop Hafeez after he bowled well..cannot drop imad for asghar after he finished well with the bat and bowled decently...Only shehzad but he can be given another chance to see where he will go , back to domestics or stay in int'l....tuk tuking too much...

Drop Hafeez and Junaid.

Shehzad
Kami
Babar
Malik
Sarfraz
Asif
Imad
Shadab
Fahim
Aamir
Hasan

Hafeez won't be dropped because he took two wickets with the ball despite failure with the bat.

This is the issue with Hafeez, he'll find some way of holding onto his place.

8th place is secure win or lose so I think we should make a few changes. Ahmed, Hafeez and Aamir out, Fakhar, Fahim and Asghar in. Batting order should be. Kakmal, Fakhar, babar, Sarfi, Malik, Imad, Shadab, Fahim, Hasan, Asghar, Junaid. Fahim must be given a look in between him and Talat we need a medium pace all-rounder for the CT.

Wait what? Losing series from Windies wont push us way down?

There will be no changes but I'd take Hafeez out and put Fahim/Asghar in.

Move Imad up to #6, Shadab up to #7, and have Fahim/Asghar at #8 with Amir, Hasan, and Junaid to follow.

I say this with no doubts: it would help pakistan immensely in the long run if they lose tomorrow.

The two Jason's and the rest of the argonauts will be looking to make the Pakistani bowlers dance to their tunes tomorrow
I can see nurse and holder proving to be too skilful for the opposition in all eventuality

I hope Sarfraz goes off tomorrow. Nurse needs to get a well deserved phainty. And "The Green General" needs some runs.
The middle order should be (unfortunately Professor will play):
3. Babar
4. Sarfraz
5. Hafeez
6. Malik
Slowly moving Hafeez down the order.
Fakhar should come in for one of the openers. I doubt it will happen though.
Bowling should remain the same.
I want to see Pakistan chase.
I want to see Amir get 4+ wickets. Shadab getting 3+. Junaid being more economical. Imad chips in with a wicket too.
I want the TTFs to underperform.

I want Pakistan to win!

I hope Shehzad, Hafeez, and Akmal fail so dreadfully that they're booted out the team. Would help us going in to CT '17.

Windies names squad for final ODI vs Pakistan

GEORGETOWN, Guyana (CMC) — Left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul has been called up to the West Indies squad as cover for speedster Shannon Gabriel, ahead of Tuesday’s final One-Day International against Pakistan.

Gabriel is struggling with a right hamstring niggle and will undergo a fitness Test on Tuesday morning before his place in the starting XI is determined, head coach Stuart Law said in a West Indies Cricket Board release.

The right-arm pacer has emerged as a crucial cog in the Windies side and has taken 18 wickets in 12 One-Day Internationals since his debut last June.

Last month, Gabriel was also ruled out of the final one-dayer of the three-match series against England after he picked up a side strain.

Permaul, meanwhile, has not played international cricket in two years and suited up for the last of his six ODIs four years ago.

West Indies will chase a series win in Tuesday’s final game, after winning the first match by four wickets but losing the second by 74 runs.

SQUAD – Jason Holder (captain), Devendra Bishoo, Jonathan Carter, Miguel Cummins, Shannon Gabriel, Shai Hope, Alzarri Joseph, Evin Lewis, Jason Mohammed, Ashley Nurse, Veerasammy Permaul, Kieran Powell, Rovman Powell, Chadwick Walton.

Will be unchanged but for choice I would want junaid and hafeez out and sarfraz up the order. Don't know Zakir don't rate fakhar and don't know Ashraf though, so can't comment on who comes in instead, but there's no point in having seven bowlers, and sarfraz is both wasted down the order and should help with the stagnation in the middle overs.

1. Shehzad
2. Kakmal
3. Babar
4. Sarfraz
5. Zakir/fakhar
6. Malik
7. Imad
8. Shadab
9. Amir (is he fit?)
10. Ashraf? Could he be worse than junaid or wahab?
11. Hasan

I would also open the bowling with imad, or Hasan.

Hopefully Pakistan will bowl first today so we can get to know how this team chases as we have batted first in both games up till now.

???
???
Babar
Sarfaraz
???
???
Imad
Shadab
Amir/Wahab/???
Hasan
Junaid

Fact of the matter is...against top class sides like Eng, SA, Ind etc...this batting line up will fail miserably.

Pakistan just doesnt have the batters that are a 'must' these days to consistently win ODI matches.

Even Imad is a step too high...

Ideally I would have liked players with the skill level (or the lack of it) of Umar, Sharjeel, Latif, Shahzaib, Maqsood, Hammad Azam, Aamer Yamin, Awais Zia etc to develop.

But for whatever reason this hasnt happened.
