Australia have moved to the top of the Test and T20I rankings for men while England continue to lead the men’s ODI rankings after the annual update carried out on Friday, which eliminates results from 2016-17.

India displaced from top of Test list for the first time since October 2016; Pakistan slip in T20I rankings after 27 months as No. 1

England consolidate position on top of men’s ODI rankings, increasing lead over second-placed India

In the latest update, that rates all matches played since May 2019 at 100 per cent and those of the previous two years at 50 per cent, Australia (116) have taken over from India as the top ranked side in the MRF Tyres ICC Men’s Test Team Rankings with New Zealand (115) remaining in second place. India are now third with 114 points.

With only two points separating them, this is the second closest the top three teams have been since the Test rankings were launched in 2003. The closest for the top three teams was in January 2016, when India had led Australia and South Africa by a single point.

India have yielded the top spot for the first time since October 2016. This is largely because India had won 12 Tests and lost just one Test in 2016-17, the records of which were removed in the latest update. They had won all five series during this period including against Australia and England. On the other hand, Australia had lost to South Africa as well as to India in the same period.

South Africa have suffered the biggest rating fall of eight points, which sees them drop below Sri Lanka into sixth place. They had won three series in the period culled, while they have lost eight of their nine Tests since February 2019, playing against Sri Lanka, India and England.

India still lead the ICC World Test Championship, a league comprising six series played by each of the top nine Test sides.

In the MRF Tyres ICC Men’s ODI Team Rankings, reigning World champions England (127) have increased their lead over India from six to eight points. New Zealand remain in third place, three points behind India. The top ten rankings remain unchanged.

By contrast, the updated MRF Tyres ICC Men’s T20I Team Rankings see plenty of changes. Australia (278) top the list for the first time since the T20I rankings were introduced in 2011. Pakistan, who had overtaken New Zealand to reach top position in January 2018 and then spent 27 months there, are now fourth with 260 points.

England have moved into second position with 268 points while India are up one place to third, just two points behind.

Afghanistan are down from seventh to 10th while Bulgaria are the biggest gainers, up 12 places to 51st in the 84-country list of teams that played the requisite six matches in the past three years.

When the global T20I rankings were launched 12 months ago, there were 80 ranked teams. Since then seven teams have joined the table (Bermuda, Cayman Islands, Italy, Norway, Portugal, Romania and Turkey), while three countries (France, Isle of Man and France) have lost their rankings having played insufficient matches.

Well deserved, India lost the moral right to be number one after the NZ tour. Also we are an ageing side in decline, Australia is at its peak. But to be moral number one Aussies must do better in the SC, they haven't won here for many years. Even whitewashed 0-3 in Sri Lanka and held to a series draw in Bangladesh last time they toured. They have the potential to at least win in these 2 countries, I don't think they can win in UAE/Pak and India.

Australia tours in 2022 are in subcontinent.
2 tests in U.A.E/Pakistan
2 tests in Srilanka
1 test vs Afghanistan in India
4 tests in India

Also Langer and Smith priority is to win series in India

The brain trust of Misbah and Waqar decided to reinstate Umar Akmal and Ahmed Shehzad for the Sri Lanka series, simply to spite the previous coach who sidelined them, and we were thus whitewashed at home (to a C team) derailing our T20 form.

They then compounded their errors in Australia by recalling 37 year old Mohammed Irfan and bringing in mediocrity like Musa Khan.

pakistan technically lost no.1 slot when they lost to sri lankan 'Z' team in pakistan

Australia has been doing quite well in T20 lately. They deserve to be #1 in T20 ranking currently.

I know this no cricket period is hard but whatsup with everyone from players to posters throwing around allegations these days.

Dude, Waqar publicly scathed Akmal and Shehzad in his 2015 report. It's on record. It takes a big man to forgive about the past and give someone another chance. We all had hopes they would come good but they simply couldn't deliver. Both are out of the team again and rightly so

Don't worry about T20 (and ODI) rankings, meaningless. Only performances in ICC tournaments matter. I don't see NZ and WI (ranked 9th :)) ) on the top 5 list but come the T20 WC they will be among the favorites to win the cup.

Not to be harsh but Pakistan has never been the best T20 side at any point of time since 2012-13, on paper they were but come on guys, we haven't started following cricket since yesterday.

So what does it say about the judgment of Misbah and Waqar, who saw Akmal and Shehzad's poor work ethic and attitude for themselves when they were captain and coach, after recalling these two proven failures who couldn't buy a run against Sri Lanka C ?

dont mind we are still in touching distance..im more concerned about the ODI and test rankings..we had a really good run..

On the bright side, Pakistan is well-placed to improve its positions in all three formats. There is a difference of only a few points between Pakistan and the next best ranked team. Whether its India in T20Is (6 points ahead), Australia in ODIs (5 points ahead) or South Africa and Sri Lanka in Tests (4 & 5 points ahead)

Nothing - Its a format where you will have varying results they did well to keep hold of that Number 1 ranking as long as they did.

This. Pak just needs consistency for a year or two across the formats (In tests atleast at home and some countries away) to be close or in the top 3 of all the formats.

I doubt many teams can maintain number 1 ranking in T20s, a format which can be really unpredictable for 27 or so months.

They've not played like a number 1 ranked team of late.

They have looked ordinary, clueless at times and looking like a team that has lost its way in T20Is.

Mickey Arthur's views on Pakistan's rise to number one in T20Is

PakPassion.net: Becoming the number one-ranked T20 team must also rank very highly too?

Mickey Arthur: Absolutely and I take a lot of pride in us going unbeaten in 11 series, as when we started, we were down at number 9 in that list. Seeing that progression and the challenge of changing the game plans to match what we wanted and to suit our style of play was amazing. When we started off on this journey, we didn’t have the finishers, we didn’t have a power-hitter but we did it our way. We scrapped our way and we knew if we got to 150 or more, we had a bowling attack that could bowl sides out and that’s how we wanted to play which was to attack and look for wickets. In the process, to see the development of our young players such as Babar Azam, get better and better was very rewarding.
