What was the reason for preferring Muhammad Musa over Naseem Shah for the 2nd Test?

Would love to hear some justifications.

From what I understood, Naseem was the big thing in Tests, he had been doing a good job in FC - we didnt hear much about Musa. Also this is a crunch game and by all accounts from Pakistan management, Naseem had no fitness issues so what could have been the reason?

Youngsters have been selected to get “exposed” so Misbah-ul-Haq can go back to his oldies vs SL. Expect no youngsters besides Imam, Babar, *Rizwan and Shaheen in the squad of 14.

There is no sane reason. Misbah is just continuing to destroy pakistan cricket

Why was Musa even selected is the question.
Musa this season 5 wickets in 4 innings at an average of 68 and we take him to Australia to play world championship league.

Its simple. Their attitude is defensive. Misbah is here to learn not win. Using a crucial world championship game to give exposure to a youngster who is nothing special? You have got to be kidding me

Naseem is better than Musa but it was right to rest him in this match in case he gets injured. He needs to be managed carefully.Pakistan needs a few more fast bowlers so they can be rotated.PCB needs to get Hasnain ready for tests too.

It's ignorance. When they think of Australia, they think of pace. What you actually need are extremely accurate 140kph bowlers that can nip it around a bit. The taller they are, the better. But even short and accurate bowlers have had plenty of success here.

If he has to be rested after bowling 20 overs, he should not simply be selected for tests. The truth is misbah mindset is defensive and will get us nowhere

Quite frankly they don't have a clue what they're doing. Who makes 3 changes to a test team in a 2 match series. Is this meant to be warm up matches for them? Why did they get it so badly wrong?

If he isn't fit or unable to handle work load then he should have not been selected for this tour.
It's only 2 tests not 5

It's Imran and Musa that shouldn't have been selected. Naseem has been performing in domestic and needs this experience.

He’s not here to learn.

His master plan is to play his friends XI.

When fans ask for youngsters he will point to this tour.

Expect this squad in the next series:

Abid Ali
Shan Masood
Azhar Ali*
Asad Shafiq
Babar Azam
Iftikhar Ahmed
Mohammad Rizwan+
Kashif Bhatti
Yasir Shah
Rahat Ali
Mohammad Abbas

Usman Salahuddin
Bilal Asif
Salman Butt
Junaid Khan

Shocked to find out he has been averaging 70s this FC season and his overall FC average is 38 despite favorable nature of Pakistani FC pitches.

What is the justification or reasoning?

Atleast with Nasim shah I get that he averaged like 16-17 in his FC career and has tools such as pace and height.

Musa is super short and is not express (he is 136-142 in opening spell) and doesn’t seem to have seam Orswing in his armory either

Like seriously what is reason for chief
Selector to bring him.

This thread will be flooded soon with each PPer throwing the name of his favorite youngsta beauty, claiming how X or Y is a lot better and should have been selected instead.

Names like Sameen, Ehsan Adil, Amad Butt, Cheema et. al. will be thrown in.

The bitter truth is, all the above names are of the same quality: 3rd grade. That is the reality of our bowling stocks, and this is not going to change if this is the backup supply that we have.

Naseem and Shaheen are the only prospects with some potential. All the others I mentioned above will have no affect on our bowling fortunes. Will play some matches, and will fade away.

Even Amir and Abbas would have made no difference in Tests.

Amir has lost all his pace, can't swing. Wahab is a spraygun.

It seems like PCB panicked after the retirement of Amir and Wahab and Musa was one of the names that they fast-tracked in haste.

His selection seems like a fluke to me. He is not ready or maybe not good enough by any measure to play Test cricket.

PCB are usual are slow to react. They should have seen the writing on the wall, i.e. Amir will quit Test cricket soon and prepare accordingly.

The Indian journalists who broke the story nearly 12 months ago weren’t cooking stories.

Third grade names with performances > third grade names picked for no reason.

Nicely dodged the question :misbah3

Musa should not play Test cricket. Doesn't have the tools to succeed. Experienced cricketers like Misbah and Waqar should judge that within one net session or one practice game.

Naseem should not be mollycoddled. Should have played this game

Musa hasn't performed in FC cricket.

There's no merit to his selection at all. Just like there was no merit to Imran Khan being selected after putting up dismal FC stats this season.

Selecting young players is wonderful (i.e. Naseem Shah) as long as they have shown something in domestic cricket. By selecting Musa like this, Misbah may have ruined his confidence in all formats.

There's no basis. When you have a poor system, then you're expecting miracles from untested players by just throwing them in. That's exactly what the PCB does.

Musa has potential but has zero performances in any format so far.

Misbah is unbelievable fickle...not taking anything away from musa as i want youngsters to do well..bit naseem.had to play

Musa's career economy rate is 4 so he clearly has problems with control too.

The only explanation is that Misbah and Waqar wanted pace, they've seen him in PSL where he features for IU, and decided to fast-track him.

Not at all ready for international cricket yet. Ridiculous decision to first select him and second play him over Naseem

Pakistan cap is so easy to get , anyone can come in and get it . atleast make them work hard for it first in FC.

Exactly!!!! Misbah knows what he is doing. Misbah is well ahead of ppiers when it comes to trick to bluff.

No it's not easy

1. You have to be playing for Islamabad united.

2. You must be misbah's friend

3. You must be over 30 or under 20

If you think that PP contributors are unhappy, you should see the angry faces in the team hotel.

The team can see that players like Iftikhar, Imran and Musa are being favoured in the absence of domestic achievements, and the players are basically a continuum from insecure to angry.

Especially the guys aged 20-28, whose team-mates from the Mickey era have been dumped more due to bias and vendettas than logic. I won’t spell out their names, but it is their friends and peers whom Misbah has chucked out of the squad. And they look far from impressed.

Islamabad United ka hai or kia chaiye?

Tabish Khan, Sadaf Hussain should forget about playing cricket for Pakistan.

Let me quote misbah's own woprds to describe this situation:

"Lanat Hai Tere pay" :misbah

Like I said in the match thread, the incompetence of Misbah and Waqar can be summed up by the selections of Imran and Musa.

Neither of them should have been selected ahead of Sameen Gul and Ehsan Adil. The latter in particular would have been useful for the Day/Night Test as he's an accurate bowler who can move the ball both ways. He's 6 ft 4 as well, but the key is he actually utilises his height with a high arm action.

I haven't seen much of Sameen, but going by his domestic stats and from the few clips I've seen of him, he's undoubtedly far superior to Musa and that nakli Imran Khan.

Scenario 1 - Misbah picks some oldies and pakistan losses ---- Fans "Misbah shld have tried youngsters atleast they would be tested and would have exposure in the loss"

Scenraio 2 - Misbah picked youngstrs and pakistan losses ------ Fan "whats the base of picking musa and Naeem, should have taken experieced bowlers"

there is no way of winning from most stupid fans... i hate misbah after how he wasted the home series by bringing in "the worst thing to happen to pakistan cricket after Shaid Afridi - Umar Akmal" in the team but really this team was much better..... much much much superior pakistani and other sub continent teams have been bashed in aus.... so dnt be DUMB.... it was an ok choice

No.

Misbah has picked players in the Over Thirty and Teen categories.

But Inzy and Mickey had five guys in their twenties in the last Test attack. And Misbah just needed to retain as many of them as possible rather than destabilise the team.

Feel sorry for any younger bowler been picked in pakistan team right now, clearly dont have the right captain, coach or fellow bowlers to coach them along

who should have been in there? name 1 ...... dnt bring in Fawad Alam ( poor guy has been neglected by all so not misbah's fault alltogether)

From the Mickey/Inzamam squad to South Africa:

Delete: Sarfraz, Azhar, Fakhar, Hasan Ali, Yasir (who was dropped by the end anyway).

Insert: Rizwan, Ehsan Adil. Sameen Gul, Naseem Shah. Sami Aslam.

Ehsan Adil , serious doubt abt the guy but lets consider him .... dont think would have been any better
Rizwan is there so
Sameen Gull was outbowled by rookies in most games he has played at any level ... since his change in action he has lost it

Sami Aslam def yes but with Azhar, Abid , Imam and Shaan, we probably didnt need Sami... he would be 3rd in the picking order so wont matter

But ..........

Fans gets Musa who averages 70
Shaheen Shah who averages 60
Imran khan who averages 50

Sameen Gull - Outbowled by almost everyone he has played with and u think he is better than SSA?

In Australia, its all abt having tht pace... Abbas is having no impace bcz of his sub 130 pace, Sameen avgs almost the same....

no1z defending Imran .. he was a pthatic choice

PS SSA avg 24 in List A and 26 in first class ....

Why rest him? It is only a two Test series...

Pakistan only bowled ONCE last Test match anyway...

He was quick & looked likely. What good will it do him to play a single match & then get dropped ? Why not give him the chance to apply what he has just learned in his first Test?

Musa doesn't look a Test player at all.

List A has nothing to do with this format

Nobody cares about SSA Form from last year

current test is it played on current form so talk about his current average in first class

Your point doesn't apply to Shaheen, he was unwell/injured at the start of the season and only played one game where the teams made first-innings scores of 550/450. That was his first game back, he was a part of the Test squad previously and was always going to be selected. He's bowled well enough in Australia too.

IK and Musa shouldn't have been selected.

I live in Australia.

It’s NOTHING to do with pace here.

It’s all about HEIGHT and SSA is the only player tall enough to exert control.

As he has proved in both Tests.

Pakistan throw in 16-17-18 year olds and hope to see the next Wasim and Waqar.

I find it strange that there are no 22-23-24-25 year olds making debut. Is there no one in that age group in pakistan cricket who is good enough?

Somehow i find that pakistani fans too enjoy these teen players making their debuts and take pride in it, as if the actual onfield performance was secondary.

PPers in particular have some sort of a fetish with youngsta beauties.

As for 22-25 year olds, sadly, yes, there's nobody good enough. The teens are not good enough either, the only exception is Naseem. There was another hyped up - Hasnain - but he's also terrible.

It's good his body is getting some rest as I'm sure he may have run into some fitness issue or carrying a minor injury.

Our bowling stocks are completely empty. Shaheen and Naseem have some potential.

Like I said in another thread, he is selected because both waqar and misbah are affiliated with IU.

That is the only reason he has been selected.

I don't live in Australia, but I watch cricket a bit and spend timein Cricket blogs - and the bold part is one of the most hilarious comments I have ever read in cricket blogs, not only in PP here.

I think, I need to repeat a part of my previous post here - please do response this time.

Last year India toured and their two pacers instrumental in Series win are max. 5'10" and 5'9" - please explain that. OK - I got that explanation, without Warner and Smith, that AUS batting was club level.

Previous year, ENG played an Ashes Test at the most typical of AUS wickets - WACA and their three pacers were 6'5" Broad, 6'2" Anderson and 6'6" Overton, backed by 4th pacer (all-rounder) 5'11" Woakes - so, your both bases (height & 4th pacer "all-rounder") were covered .... and Aussies declared at 660+, to win by innings - this one you explain please.

Musa and Imran Khan snrs selections are as bizarre as it gets in cricket if we look at the QAE 19 stats. Musa yet to perform in FC and Imran Khan’s inability was pretty evident in the last Aus tour as well.

Even if they think Musa has potential, you dont start selecting players without them even showing that and nourishing that in domestic cricket.

I Just hope this isnt the end of Musa. I believe he is a very good LOI bowler and in the future in sha Allah also a good Test bowler.

I have to agree. Its been more hoping than proper selection and gameplan. I dont mind Shaheen and Naseem in the squad but they should be supported by someone who is decent and has played first class cricket. Imran Khan snr is mediocre which everybody knows while Musa has played 4-5 FC games and averages over 40. While Abbas bowls 125-130 which isnt suitable for these conditions unless there would have been grass from the Adelaide test.

Ehsan Adil, Sameen Gul etc were definitely more prepared than Imran and Musa with height, pace and experience of FC cricket.

Its truly bizarre and someone should take the responsibility for this.

Not even sure what potential he's shown so far. He can ball in the 140's...big whoop.

Every fast bowler can do that, you need something more in your locker to stand out these days. Either some ability to swing or move the ball, or some height to get a bit of bounce or seam.

A short pace bowler would need to be a lot faster than Musa to offer any real threat to top batsmen. He's not that quick.

Definitely, wrong timing of selecting a player shouldnt be considered the player’s mistake.

Musa is just not ready yet. Horrific decision. Taking Naseem was a good idea for him to gain experience but Naseem is lightyears ahead of Musa in terms of skill and accuracy. Tabish Khan would have been a much wiser selection for the 3rd seamer on a pitch like this

I agree that unless someone is exceptional you dont start selecting players averaging 38 in FC and 40+ in the season just because you are hoping he turns it around and test level.

Naseem has proved that in FC cricket as well unlike Musa.

This kid is very ordinary, he is not international level and i doubt he ever will be.
HARIS RAUF! This guy is a raw young version of waqar younis.
Naseem shah
Shaheen shah afridi

This trio is the future of pak.fast bowling!

Ehsan adil
Sameen gul
Abbas
Can be backup/ 4th pacers

Thats 6 pace bowlers, no need for anyone else.

Dump
Musa
Imran khan snr

Right so you feel there is no way Pakistan would get better results even if we changed bowlers. With the current coaching staff alongside captain I agree. However with a different coaching staff thats more qualified I would respectfully disagree. With that said I would have preferred if we never did tour. If we were going to give in like this.

All of you just need to shut the hell up. Last match half of you were complaining about abbas not playing, well he played here and it still doesn't make a difference. Having Naseem Shah playing in this game was not gonna make a difference either. Just need to accept Pakistan is not good playing Australia in Australia, hence they are about to lose the 14 straight test In Australia. I wanna ask all those criticizing specially the former players what were u doing in those other test in Australia, they lost just like this team. You people just need excuses to criticize the Pakistan team just give it a rest. They were never gonna win a test in Australia with this inexperienced team, if this team loses to Sri Lanka in Pakistan then say something or else keep your gully cricket cricket experience knowledge to yourself.

This mediocre spraygun midget should never wear a Pakistan cap again. A poor man's Hasan Ali.

This is a public forum where opinions of others are herd. You’re on the wrong platform if you can’t deal with that. I love how you criticize the haters and yet never give any blame to the team management. We lost this series before we even announced the teams. It happen when you gave a unqualified person the most authority in our cricket.

You need to button it mate, i never wanted abbas to play, i wanted this as our bowling attack -

Haris rauf
Shaheen shah afridi
Ehsan adil
Sameen gul
Shadab khan

A very capable 5 man attack, which can take 20 wickets in a test match in australia!

Haris Rauf needs to have an FC season where he is amongst top 3 wicket takers --- thats the only way to make his case

Waqar is the worst bowling coach for Pakistan. Misbah and Waqar have no eye for selection. They select the mediocre squad and this mediocre bowler. Shameful act by Misbah. I still believe Inzi and Micky was doing better than this Misbah and waqar

All I'm saying is there comes a point where we need to stop criticizing the management, most of us did the same with the Mickey Arthur era.The players are the ones that play on the field, responsibility needs to fall on the players also, these so called professionals. My only point is in regards to this series, no matter who Pakistan picked they were never gonna win in Australia, They have lost 13 straight test in Australia going back to the great 1999 team. The only difference is atleast we competed, but a loss is a loss. There were people on this same platform that wanted Mickey and sarfraz gone. I don't agree with who the board picked to lead the team and management, but u cant judge in the first couple of months. If they were to get whitewashed by Sri Lanka next month I would be more concerned.

The team management has a huge role in how our cricket is played. They are responsible in making sure our players are ready for the alien conditions they are exposed to. They are responsible for picking the right players based on there performances in domestic. Players are only responsible for what they do on the field. But outside of it, its the team managements job to prep the players enough for them to execute there plans on the field. Cricket has changed from the past. Coaches are playing a bigger role than they used to.

As for this series alone what we got is a unqualified coach who is still learning his trade. He is the chief selector, he is the batting coach. Now granted he has not been given enough time. But the results thus far are appalling. Since our victory against Sri-Lanka in Odi’s we have gotten beaten very badly. Nobody is saying we are required to beat Australia in Australia but we should at least give a fight. What we got instead is speeches about the future. Its as if we have already admitted defeat before the games even started. And is it wrong to want to see Pakistan win in Australia?

He played for Islamabad in PSL.
To give some nuance to Pakistan’s selection here : Naseem, Musa, and Hasnain were driven by performances of the bowlers in 2016 and in South Africa. They felt the bowlers didn’t have enough pace.
The issue is talent Managment: if they really believe in these, they need to be played regularly either in the test team or first class. We end up discarding too many players after a premature debut

I agree that unless someone is exceptional you dont start selecting players averaging 38 in FC and 40+ in the season just because you are hoping he turns it around and test level.

I think it just needs better judgement. Naseem Shah had equally rotten figures in the last test match, but that kid looks like a genuine prospect.

I'm not sure what the selectors are seeing when they watch Musa. I would rate Shah, Rauf and Hasnain way ahead of him. None of them are giants either, but they have either pace or movement. This kid needs to be wearing platform shoes to get a decent bounce.

Fault definitely lies with Misbah/Waqar. They were the sole reason why Pakistan went to new lows in 2013/14/15. I expect we would be #10 team in ODI and #8 in tests by 2021.

Absolutely no reason to select Musa. He just performed in periods in PSL. That is it!

We are placing too much burden of expectations on these youngsters. They are not world beaters and they are not becoming one anytime soon. Have patience and continuity and hope that in time they might develop better feel for the game. Key is to ear-mark good players for the future and have continuity in selection.

Don't hold your breath there for his response - there's no end to the weirdest nonsensical things coming from him -
1. Performance doesn't matter, age does - get two 16-17 old boys, 2 over 30's, and rest in their 20's with total disregard to their performance.
2. Declare after Dinner at Adelaide because you'll get bowled out after that anyway! Look how big an opportunity Aussies lost - Ha!
3. "NOTHING to do with pace here" - In the previous tours he was happily cursing Indian bowlers who were bowling medium pace and said with this pace nobody will be bothered and that Shield cricketers can't be bothered by this pace.

There are so many gems if you dig around, but these are the most recent ones.

There are posters here moaning yet they were the same ones who wanted young phaaaast bowlers in the squad and applauded musas selection.

This is a fair opinion. However its not the youngsters that are being blamed here. It’s the Chief Selector who though it was a good idea to debut them in lion’s den.

Need to learn very quick and Waqar needs to get into his ear to make him perform - very very soon!

I don't mind youth being given a chance, but not when it's thoughtless selections.

This lad has only played 7 First-class matches taking only 17 wickets at an average of over 37 and 0 5fers.

I really don't get on what basis this lad was picked for the Test squad.

Come on yaar, they weren't asking for school kids who were probably still playing at the local park a few months ago.

This is the only selection I have an issue with other than the 50/50 with iftikhar

This guy has nothing in domestics and has been picked purely because of his pace and apparently because he got Babur azam out in nets

This is a selection of real ineptitude
The likes of Sadaf, zia, butt, rauf, shinwari, akif must be wondering what on earth they’ve done wrong

All I know about is he’s born in chitral and he was the best bowler in the u19 Asian cup

Humayun farhat, bazid, zulqarnain, yasir Ali, shakeel Ahmed, qaiser Abbas, naved latif, Riaz Afridi, mir hamza,

bhai tabdili chal rehi ha....
lol jokes aside..

I am not against these young kids but we should not go after pace. I know pace is important but just selecting a person solely based on pace is not right thing. Need to teach them swing plus line and length.
