I can speak Bengali and English. I understand Hindi and Urdu a bit. I can read Arabic.

Languages I wish to learn are Mandarin, Arabic, and French.

What about you? Are there any languages you wish to learn? :inti

Arabic, although I know it a bit and studied too.

Russian sounds cool too

Nice.

Russian language has no utility for me. So, not interested to learn it even though I like Russian culture.

Mandarin and French have utlities for me since French is an official language in Canada and there are many Chinese-owned businesses in Canada where knowing Mandarin can come in handy.

I want to master Arabic for Islamic purpose. Also, it may come in handy when I visit for Hajj and Umrah (in sha Allah).

It's quite different. I have some Gujarati colleagues would love to surprise them.

Nice.

I used to play club cricket and street cricket here in Canada. There were many gujju cricketers. Maybe I could've learned Gujarati back then to sledge them. :qdkcheeky

Just kidding. I don't like sledging in cricket.

Arabic. I speak a bit because I used to live in the Middle East. But I want to learn the fully standardized, fusha Arabic.

Are they Modi supporters?

:kp
Yes they are. Infact I have interacted with many hardcore RSS supporters who came to my city to study and would rent homes from some of my family who were landlords. We played lots of cricket together, ate together ( non beef), I have prayed namaz in their company and they have done pujas while we sat in other rooms of their house.

In most cases even the most hardcore Indian/Pakistani nationalists will get on together very well in the UK/USA/Dubai. Being outside of the subcontinent makes people decent lol

Anyway out of respect to @sweep_shot I will not elaborate further on this thread.

You can elaborate, brother. I don't mind if you do it. :inti

I am simply asking bhakts not to derail the thread (like they often do). :inti

Fully standardized Fusha Arabic? 😯 What is that brother?

Arabic

As in just fully standardized Arabic bro. You’ll find every region like North Africa, and within there each of the Arab countries like Morocco and Egypt have not only their own dialect (like we talked about regarding recitation) but also their own invented vocab mainly in slang which uses letters not in Arabic normally like g in golf.

Same with gulf countries too surprisingly.

So I want to learn Fusha which sounds professional when spoken, no slang, and is the way of the Quran as well. It’s fully standardized and what you’d speak in professional settings.

My dream is to pick up a petty fight with a localite in some mall in Chennai. Then when they all gang up on me and ask me to talk in Tamil, i start singing Whistle Podu and surprise everyone with my prank and we all happily go to eat some Dosa.

Bengali. By Bengali I mean proper Bengali spoken in West Bengal, not that garbage that Bangladeshis speak. A lot of Assamese people can understand proper Bengali. Some can even speak. Unfortunately, I can't.

I want to improve my Spanish and Portuguese. They are pretty similar and I have some fluency but lots of work is still required.

I want to learn Tagalog and German.

In Bangladesh, there are many different dialects of Bangla. Perhaps you listened to one of the regional dialects.

Standard Bengali language is the same in both Bangladesh and West Bengal.

Anyway, Bengali is not my favorite language. I speak it just to communicate with my people. My favorite language is Arabic. :inti

What garbage? The Standard official Shudho Bengali is same in both places. Bangladesh people dont speak in standard Bengali everyday they mix it up with dialectical words and BD has more varieties like in UK there’s different accents in different regions, in BD there’s dialects every district, but still in general has more Bengali speakers than west Bengal tho... Assamese speak Assamese which is lot closer to Sylheti than Bengali. I understand Assamese a little. Yes they also understand Bengali too in Lower Assam region.

Want to pick up some Spanish. Not many Hispanics in my area but would be good to learn if I crisscross through US. Kids learn it in school anyways.

That is a harsh word to use.
You can say that Bengali is more refined in West Bengal.

In West Bengal , I think if you go to rural areas , there the accent of spoken Bengali is closer to Bangladesh accent.
Apart from that , the selection of words is somewhat different in east and west Bengal.

I find west bengal bengali language quite constipated. I call it Mr. Bean Bangla.

Within Bangladesh, there are 50+ dialects. In Dhaka alone, there are different dialects.

Anyway, standard Bangla is the same in west bengal and Bangladesh.

By standard what do people mean here ? Standard means the text book Bengali I suppose.
In Bangladesh there are certain words which are used , which are not used in West Bengal. Possibly it is a dialect issue.

Anyway, this was supposed to be a lighthearted thread. Bhakts may try to derail it. Let's not do that. :inti

Standard bangla = written bangla, professionally used bangla. It is the same everywhere.

There can be dialect issues. Correct. For example, west bengal folks use words like lonka, jol etc. We use morich, pani etc.

Minor differences.

Hitman lives in Assam. I doubt this guy has ever set foot outside of Assam. Assam is near Sylhet which is countryside Bangladesh. Sylhet has its own dialect just like other districts have their own dialects.

So, Hitman probably heard the regional dialect and thinks it is the standard bangla in Bangladesh. It is not. Even I don't understand all the dialects. For example, I barely understand the Chittagong dialect.

Brother ever thought of learning Punjabi?

There’s nothing quite like an angry Bengali. I used to have a Bengali neighbour back once I lived in a society where there was no reserved parking and people often got at crossroads with neighbours over parking. So this Bengali uncle ji got angry at me once for parking at his space. It was so amusing i did it a few times just to see him giving to me in Bengali. We became friends though. Don’t judge me for my actions when i was influenced by the dark side.

Bengali spoken in West Bengal India is bit different from the one spoken in Dhaka. So brother @Hitman was correct to an extent.

Just bcoz I am keeping quiet in this thread after OP insulted me in post #12 doesn't mean you guys pile on Hitman.

Nice. Swahili.

Does Lion King have something to do with it? Hakuna Matata?
Naah, spending lots of time in East Africa lately, knowing Swahili will help in mingling locals. Also my plan is to learn atleast one language from each continent.

I am WB native, can converse with BD colleagues just fine. Never realised we are conversing in different version of Bangla language.
