"What right does Mickey Arthur have to say Hafeez isn't committed to his country?" : Shoaib Akhtar

Shoaib Akhtar wades in to the Mohammad Hafeez vs Mickey Arthur discussion:

"Like dislike are 100% part of it. Captains play their favorite players and they also play and win matches. I have seen this throughout my life. It's not that they are just friends in the ground and they play for 6-7 years without performances, that doesn't happen. There are only 1-2 cases like this. But Hafeez is right that likes and dislikes exist.

"For Mickey Arthur to say that your commitment to Pakistan isn't there - bhaijaan he has been playing for 15 years for Pakistan. You came to Pakistan for 15-25 months. What right does he have to say Hafeez isn't committed to his country? Mickey Arthur isn't some legend or some high-performance coach, he was just OK. He was a good manager, he knew how to handle people but to say who is committed and who isn't committed, what is this?

"There is a career of 15 years for Pakistan and then there is a career of 10 years before that which requires you to grind and get to this stage. It's not just based on talk, you have to go through a lot to play for Pakistan, not like today. There is a whole process. We hear a lot of things all for Pakistan. And to put all this away in one sentence and say you weren't committed... was I wasting my time for 25 years?

"You came for 2-3 years and cleverly spent 2 years living off the Champions Trophy. Don't come here and tell me I'm not committed to my country.

"Don't suddenly jump on a person's commitment unless he has done match-fixing or broken some laws due to which you have hurt the country. Discipline, likes and dislikes, these happen.

"There is no bigger manager than Mourinho, he had so many likes and dislikes. A lot of players didn't agree with him but played with him. If you decide that a player is good then write his name for the team. If you don't think so then fine, but don't bring your ego in the way.

"To wipe out 25 years of work in one go is unfair."

Its free season at the moment - no cricket so people saying whats on their minds!

forgive me if i am wrong but did Arthur not say he disliked selfish people, did he specifically name drop Hafeez, or is Akhtar jumping on the bandwagon for views?

This is the unfortunate thing with some former players, that if you happen to be a good friend of player X then you will defend him just to show your loyalty , not looking at the matter at hand.

What’s the alternative if Mickey’s statement about comfort zone was incorrect , that player X did not take his place for granted and actually worked very hard after struggling overseas early in his career to improve his technique, had coaching sessions with former Pakistani players and consulted Greg Chappell / Sunil Gavaskar / Geoff Boycott for tips, he even hired a private coach like Shan Masood and after spending hours and hours in nets practicing he came back a much improved and consistent batsman who became an asset for the Pakistan team?

Shoaib looks to be controversial

As the ex coach and coach at the time mickey has every right to express his opinion and call out \not pick players he felt were coasting in their career

You look back at hafeezs career and your justified in saying his stats are bang avge for someone whos played for so long That shouldnt even be up for discussion

Wasn’t Haffez was just recently warned against doing speaking anyone by Wasim Khan, I have not watched the whole thing but pic shows shohaib and Hafeez together.

Absolutely no disrespect intended, but can we please stop making threads about Shoaib's channel every time he says anything 'controversial' or at least have a single containment thread?

Shoaib is a Youtuber - moderate opinions are worthless to him. It is literally his job to form the hottest takes possible in order to get views. People need to stop buying into it so easily.

Fans of Shoaib Akhtars YouTube channel have the lowest iqs in the world

probably been told his career is coming to an end, time to be bitter now.

Glad to see Shoaib standing up for a long serving Pakistani player and putting a nothing coach who has been fired from every team he has worked with in his place

Lol players retired and current have the right to call out a coach with a poor resume as well and Mickey Arthur has been fired by every employer he has worked for. No need to take rubbish from someone with that record lying down

We need some sort of cricket back on ASAP otherwise these ex cricketer and coaches will keep running their mouths.

Has he said anything wrong? Listen to the message not the messenger

For all his faults arthur was right that a lot of pakistani players are essentially lazy and coast They dont put in the hard yards like most other intnl players and hence they under perform and so does the team

Most ppers will agree hafeez has been lucky to have the career he has based on his output

Its truly been a underwhelming 17 yr career one he wouldnt have had if he played for any other half decent test team

May be shoaib thinks that Mickey indirectly pointed out his prolonging of the career despite not fit enough to bowl 10 overs in an ODI.... Shoaib fully relied on his speed than mastering the art of swing... bowlers like waqar, shoaib, bond will have to work a lot to get back if and when they lose their pace if it is due to injuries.. The difference between line and length bowlers and swing bowlers is that even with age catching up or losing few miles in their pace can still be lethal with their stocks of line and length or swing for example Wasim akram who lost his pace but relied on swing bowling to keep going and he was still a dangerous bowler to face...

Yes he has, there is no proof that Hafeez has a poor work ethic. Inspite of his faults, Hafeez is well known to be a hard trainer and puts in the work fitness, skills, nutrition wise behind the scenes to make the most of his abilities

Wasim is the right example here, Wasim never relied on pace anyways even in his prime. Waqar on the other hand is the wrong example, he was extremely ordinary from 1999-2003 and only managed to play longer than he should have because of being given the captaincy

Does Shoaib have to give his opinion on every single topic regarding cricket.

The guy needs to give it a rest before he loses his mind.

Lol, isn't that his job as a pundit. He was in the Game on Show when Dr Niaz asked both Rashid Latif and him to comment on Mickey Arthur's comments on Hafeez.

God someone needs to introduce Shoaib to a therapist and a psychiatrist. He needs mental help.

Where did Mickey say anything about poor work ethic?

To me, sitting in comfort zone means being content with mediocrity, thinking that one innings here and there is enough.. And selfish - well, Hafeez as recently as last year said that he considers himself an opener and wants to be one, even though he has proved far more useful for the team in the lower order.

This is the same guy who said there were no other milestones for him to play for after retiring from Test cricket. http://www.pakpassion.net/ppforum/s...estones-left-for-me-to-play-for-quot-M-Hafeez After a poor World Cup where he played only one innings of note and got out repeatedly to part-timers, he was indignant at a press conference when a journalist dared to suggest that he fell short of expectations at the tournament.

It's clear that he always overrated himself.

A good pundit doesn't have to offer his opinion on everything.

I'd have more respect for him if he was working with young bowlers at club level, academy level etc.

He doesn't select himself. But he has won more ODI and T-20 games for Pakistan than Misbah even though Misbah has a higher average than him, but what's the point of having a higher average if you can't use it to win games for your country and delivering when it matters.

In any case, again I repeat Mickey Arthur himself is a failed professional who has been fired from every employer he has worked for, his performance as Pakistani coach was extremely underwhelming, people sitting in glass houses shouldn't be throwing stones.

Hmm, just like Ramiz Raja and Wasim Akram? These pundits need to be compensated handsomely for their time and services and be offered the level of pay which only Franchises offer. The BCCI is able to get their elite ex players involved in domestic and academy cricket because they have the pockets, the PCB needs to do the same with the likes of Younis Khan, Yousaf, Akhtar or anyone else.

Ramiz and Wasim don't offer an opinion on anything and everything like Akhtar does.

Akhtar is all talk. Most people know about his track record and all about his indiscipline, that's why most teams etc will not touch him.

I think you are smart enough to know full well in Pakistan Cricket how this indiscipline tool is so widely misused in Pakistan Cricket to malign individuals where anyone who speaks his mind and is not scared to voice his opinions, disagree with higher powers. Lahore Qalandars had no issues working with him. You are talking about a potential PSL team owner in the next season

Pretty sure Shoaib didn’t understand a word of what Mickey said.

What makes you say this? He specifically took offence to a foreign coach with a **** poor track record who spent 2 years with a team coming in and criticizing someone who has served his country for a good 10-15 years. I am offended too to be honest.

What service? Is he doing a favour to pakistan cricket Remember its a priviledge to play for your country not a right

With a test avge of barely 40 and odi avge of 30 its pakistan cricket and its results thats got the poor end of the deal here Not hafeez whos laughing all the way to the bank

Read Mickey’s comments on Hafeez and explain how it translates to not being committed to “country”. Basic issue of Shoaib’s english ability being next to nothing.

Just like coaching is a privilege and not a right. Mickey Arthur's records speak for themselves and he is still laughing all the way to the bank

Mickey's comments were "Well I liked people that trained hard and won games for Pakistan and disliked people that were selfish and sat in comfort zones", so any neutral person can insinuate that what Mickey is saying that Hafeez either didn't train hard? Didn't win games for the country? Was selfish? Sat in comfort zones?

Didn't train hard and didn't win games for the country is not factually correct. Mickey will need to elaborate on what he means by being selfish and sitting in his comfort zone because he refused to allow Saj to elaborate further and go on the record. One can argue that Hafeez made the most of his abilities for Pakistan

The thread is on hafeez and whether he has taken his position in the team granted, has been coasting along and failed to improve over the years

Most people would say YES to this Arthur is only stating what we ppers have said over the years

One can argue that Hafeez made the most of his abilities for Pakistan

How can you argue that?

You ask most people that if someone played intnl cricket for 17 years mainly as an opening batsmam and avged barely 30 over 300 plus games across formats

Would they say thats someone whos performed well for their country

Please behave

Actually Hafeez is a much improved player compared to the start of his career from 2003 to 2007. People need to examine his stats from 2010 to now. He used to average in the low 20's but he picked that up to 32 so that is a pretty steep improvement.

Mickey Arthur just isn't man enough to accept his own faults and justified criticism and his first form of defence is always to attack his critics.

Hafeez is not merely an opening batsmen, he was an all rounder and was in the top of the ICC ODI and T-20 rankings as a bowler. His bowling was once a key element of our choking drying up the runs from 2010 to 2014 along with Saeed Ajmal, Afridi.

His primary job was is of an opening batsman
Yes he bowled a few good overs here and there but hand on heart hes been below par in his main job

This last world cup was a summary of his career to date

One good innings followed by pretty 20s and 30s and then getting out softy when he needed to kick on and win the games

Theres a reason his avges are what they are

You are downplaying his role, he merely did not bowl just a few good overs here and there. He would bowl his full quota in every game and even open the bowling for Pakistan. He has more man of the match awards than Misbah who scored plenty of 50's in losing causes.

Any intelligent poster knows Man of the matches arent a reliable gauge of quality players

Avges and scoring runs against big teams in bigger matches count Soemthing hafeez has failed to do in pretty much every world cup and big series going

Back to the topic Mickey was the coach of the team He had every right in that position to call out players who werent adding value to the team and wouldnt be in the future Thats a coachs / managers job

Hafeez at 35-36 wasnt going to suddenyl turn into virat kohli after 15 years of mediocrity Arthur did the right thing post Champions trophy to try and move him along

As was shown in the world cup hafeez he was a waste of a spot and he has no utility playing on

These last 2-3 wouldve been better spent working with young up coming batsmen for the future rather than 40 year olds whos best years were bang on avge

There are 2 words that are trademark words for Akhtar's career:

1. Fast
2. Indisciplined

Mickey Arthur had his chance with the 2018 Asia Cup with a young squad. Too bad the results were so **** poor the the selectors had no choice but go back to Hafeez. Hafeez 80 plus runs against England were vital for Pakistan in that game. Hafeez also negated a tough spell from Ferguson in that NZ game. He failed to carry on but wasn't entirely a waste of a spot, he was not keeping anyone stellar in domestic cricket waiting.

Its a pity that Mickey Arthur's talk of a high performance culture in the Pakistani team was all nothing but talk, he did not apply the same standards to the inconsistent duo of Azhar Ali, Asad Shafiq, Sarfaraz Ahmed and I bet its because they never answered back to him and blindly agreed to everything he said.

If only Mickey could do his job as well as he could talk, he would not be renowned for one thing only i.e. "getting fired"

Lets be honest Akhter was controversial and is hard work For all his talent he didnt justify that in performance enough and was involved in more scrapes off the field than performances on them

160 odd test wickets is a pretty medicore return

Saj is right when he says most groups would rather not deal with someone as temperamentally unsound and unstable like akhter

Theres a reason why hes on the net as rudimentary opinionated vlogger rather than in professional capacity with a team

Or maybe he delivered as much as his body allowed him to deliver, he still has 444 international wickets and he has 178 test wickets which is not that far from Michael Holdings 249 test wickets who is regarded as a legend in the game. Shane Warne rates Akhtar higher than Waqar because of the impact he had on the game.

Maybe the reason why he is on the internet and on tv is because it pays ten times more than a position in a professional capacity with a team, he was also hired by Lahore Qalandars and the PCB as an advisor.

Here’s Mickey’s statement “He [Hafeez] said I had likes and dislikes. Well I liked people that trained hard and won games for Pakistan and disliked people that were selfish and sat in comfort zones"

Now translate this in Urdu and let’s see how close you get to what Shoaib assumed was said. There really is no comparison. Shoaib needs to get a dictionary.

There is no need, its pretty clear what Mickey Arthur said and Akhtar I has already correctly understood what he said and he responded in kind to Mickey Arthur.

Good cop out. You know what Akhtar said made no sense. You can be as mad as you want and disagree with Mickey but don’t support Akhtar - that makes no sense. No where did Mickey raise a question on Hafeez’ integrity. Instead he called him selfish and unable to get out of his comfort zone. Maybe that’s rocket science for you but it’s simple plain English that has no deceiving meaning like you and your boy Akhtar think.

Calling someone selfish is tantamount to questioning his integrity and saying the individual is deliberately not giving his hundred percent for the team and the country. Akhtar has correctly responded to Arthur's comments that an individual cannot play for 15 long years for his country by being selfish. Akhtar also questioned Arthur's credibility to pass judgment on Hafeez who has represented his country for 15 years whereas Arthur only came for two years in which his own performance as coach was pretty underwhelming. Akhtar has correctly called out your boy Arthur for talking through his behind

Why blame Mickey for responding? Blame Hafeez for initiating it. I'm sure Mickey has better things to do than discussing Hafeez nowadays.

Yes, getting fired from every employer he works with. The tradition will continue with Sri Lanka as well.

Can't believe some people are defending shameless cheater hafeez. As for his service he's been rubbish to say the least. Can't wait for the day he retires.

I’d suggest you go on dictionary.com and search integrity and commitment. And then explain how it translates to selfishness. Seriously quit with your childish comebacks which are useless. Because at this point you really are out of your depth understanding basic English words just like Shoaib.

(of a person, action, or motive) lacking consideration for others; concerned chiefly with one's own personal profit or pleasure.

I will concede that you don't even need a dictionary. You are actually deliberately arguing for the sake of arguing. I would like you to elaborate on how can a coach call a player selfish, in his comfort zone but at the same time not meaning to question the players character, commitment to the country? Please explain in detail and not just post a liner and run away without elaborating

When a coach comments that a player is selfish without going into details and begging the reporter he made the comments to not go any further or reveal details, an intelligent cricket follower will believe what he is trying to say is that the player in question was motivated primarily for personal self interest. In a cricketing context that means that the player played more for himself and was not concerned about the team. There is no confusion here, Akthar was absolutely right in criticizing Mickey Arthur for making an empty baseless claim which he did not have the guts to elaborate on

The fact that 75% posts on this thread are yours shows who’s arguing for the sake of arguing

Every right, he was the coach; Hafeez had been stealing from Pakistan Cricket for god knows how long; an entitled pri** who failed repeatedly, had no shame at all, never improved or changed his game, never thought of the greater good for the team and was always in it for the Money, a spineless and weak cricketer who is a embarrassment to all those who ever put on a pair of pads including the club level, he may as well have called himself Gabbar Hafeez

'Mohammad Hafeez’s contributions for Pakistan are plenty,' Shoaib Akhtar demands respect for utility cricketer

Legendary Pakistani fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar believes his former teammate and skipper Mohammad Hafeez never gets enough credit for all he has done for the Green Army ever since the all-rounder made his international debut in 2003. Making his presence felt on the international circuit against minnows Zimbabwe at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium, Hafeez soon became a crowd puller for being a crucial wicket-taker and comfortably batting in almost top six slots across all formats.

Once ranked as the best all-rounder by ICC Player Rankings in white-ball cricket, Hafeez has been nicknamed The Professor for being one of the experienced campaigners for the Pakistani national side. The former skipper of the Green Army received an impending call up to the Babar Azam-led side alongside veteran all-rounder Shoaib Malik when cricket returned on Pakistan soil and Bangladesh toured the Asian giants earlier this year.

Akhtar, who has been vocal about the current Pakistan cricket scenario through his analysis and podcasts on social media lauded Hafeez for being the national side's go-to man when the team used to have their back against the wall. Speaking on a local Pakistani sports channel, Hafeez was hailed by Akhtar as the Rawalodin Express opined that the underrated star doesn't get enough credit for his contributions.

“I think Hafeez’s contributions for Pakistan are plenty. However, he does not get enough credit for his work. If you look at ODIs and T20s, he wasn’t used much in Tests, whenever Pakistan used to get into a tight corner they called on Hafeez to step up. This was true particularly in terms of bowling,” Akhtar said.

“His contribution was taken as a stock bowler, not as a match-winner. Even when he took wickets, he was suddenly changed. They thanked him for the wicket and asked him to step aside. I don’t think they did justice to Hafeez. I think Hafeez has done really well for himself both off and on the field. He has played great cricket for the last 10 to 15 years,” he added.

Hafeez has played as many 218 One Day Internationals (ODIs) and 91 T20iI for the Green Army. The 39-year-old will contemplate retirement after the 2020 ICC World T20 which will be hosted by Australia later this October. Hafeez has already retired from the longest format after playing 55 Test matches.

“Hafeez has always been a utility cricketer. He was an over-thinker first, then he became a bowler, then he became a batsman and then he did justice to his batting as well. If you see his timing, it was great. He could time the ball very well. Hafeez could have accomplished much bigger things if he didn’t overthink it too much,” he said.

Hafeez has done well to prolong his career for as long as he did. He did improve post 2010 but the guy has played about 10 Icc tournaments which equates to about 50 matches and has only managed 4 50s maximum.

Way to much time has been spent investing on him with the bare minimum output. He has probably quashed the dreams of quite a few players of playing on the big stage merely because of his lobbying and selfishness.

Even in a recent interview he was trying to justify his performance at the 2019 World Cup . He went as a “senior “ and was happy with his output of a 32 average .
