Personally want to see:

Fakhar
Babar
Haris
Sarfraz
Malik
Asif Ali
Shadab
Faheem
Hasan
Amir
Junaid/Usman/Shaheen

No time for Talat, Farhan to get into the ODI XI. Hopefully Asif Ali can cement his place against Zimbabwe.

Haris has been very disappointing since his comeback. Specially dislike how bad his fitness is. I doubt Babar will open in ODIs when he is well settled in the number three role. I think Talat might be the temp opener going into 2019 WC.

We haven’t seen much of him so far in ODIs since his comeback but he did score 2 50s back to back against NZ.

Wouldn’t mind giving him a shot as opener.

Yes pretty much this, Asif Ali is gonna be part of the world cup 2019 if anything extreme doesnt happen.

Bump! Now the Zimbabwe series is over we know which players are in form and who isn't. Imam-ul-Haq has booked his spot in the squad I am sure, people were against him in ODI format but no way he is being dropped now. Bear in mind guys, it has to be a 15 member squad as it's a tournament, in bilateral series you can have slightly more/less than 15 but in tournament's, pretty sure it's different.

Great idea sir malik loves to play against india in bilaterail and also he is only one in middle order who can toy with indian and other team spinner in asia cup .he will be most important player for us in middle order in asia cup

Yes this looks good but selection of Farhan is highly unlikely at this stage but would prefer him than having Hafeez on the bench. Having hafeez on bench serves no purpose, either play him or drop him period. Shaheen could be a good surprise package as he has shown in T20s that he belongs at this level.

I personally don't like Malik whatsoever. He didn't get much opportunities against Zim to bat, but when he did he didn't perform well. Also he will be against many minnows in the Asia Cup bar India, so another opportunities for him to retain his spot.

Not happening as Malik is playing world cup 19. Though I know his record in Eng isnt very satisfying.
Also Talat was good in Tri series but much below what was expected of him.

The question i am interested in is does Amir deserve to be in the squad for Asia Cup? He isn't performing and is blocking a space when we have a few fast bowlers who deserve a shot.

What ever you called him he merit his place in pakistan team with consistent performance from last few years and he is beast in uae and asia so he should played

In ODIs performance is not just wickets. He bowled good lines and lengths but didnt get the wickets. He was economical and has been economical for sometime. He deserves to be in the team as complements wicket takers like Shadab and Hassan well and can be wicket taker on his day.

Talat shouldn't have played at No.3 in the Tri-series whatsoever. He should have come at No.5. As for Malik, I know we won't get rid of him but GOD I would love to see him kicked out of the team.

Merit for being a Minnowbasher?????

He should not have been in the team whatsoever. We can do much better than him.

Yes I also believe no 3 is a touch higher for Talat.

No

But he will play

That's how it is

Malik is in the good graces of Mickey, Sarfraz and Inzi - rightfully so imo - so he isn’t going anywhere till WC2019

I still believe he is the cleanest power hitter / slogger in Pakistan (better than Asif)

He rarely does it against the big teams. We got Australia, South Africa and New Zealand coming up and I don't think he will do that well against them.

What's up with Imad? Is he still injured? Or just not fit enough?

Supposedly he was healthy before the Zim tour, but wasn’t invited to give a fitness test

I'd rather have him over Nawaz in the playing 11 for Asia cup

Whats the point of keeping useless Hafeez, and Nawaz in the side. I would drop them for Imam ( even though not much of a fan of him) and Junaid.

Nah, he will cement his place because the series against Aus and NZ is in UAE, he will be the standout performer for us.

And in SA he will kinda survive....

Just bring in Shaheen in place of Junaid or Nawaz.Hussain Talat needs time and so does Farhan.Farhan still should be in the squad in place of Hafeez but we all know that's not going to happen.

Think this squad covers everything. An opener back up if Imam doesn't work. A second spinner in case we want to use in conjuction with Shadab. A back up pacer to our trio, who are fighting also for the 3rd pacer slot (though Shinwari's ahead atm). And Haris who was part of the ODI team before, as well as giving us a part time spin bowling option.

No wasted spots in the team, or guys who will never play anyway.

Main reason I missed out Shaheen Afridi. He's not realistically in the battle for the 3rd pacer slot (as shown by the Zimb series). Hence there's no point, he's just taking time away from the guys who are. And we desperately need to fix this situation before the world cup. Leave him in T20s for now.

It's a well rounded team really, biggest issue is the mid/lower order. Sarfraz isn't probably good enough for a top 4 position, he'd be better at 5. Malik's struggles against pace and top tier opposition. Fahim isn't contributing with the bat yet against teams, or yet performed with the ball against top teams. And isn't being utilised much given he bats at 8 and hardly bowls full quota which is unfair to him. Shadab's a very good bat for a bowler, but doesn't strike quick enough for a no.7 bat, I'd rather see Fahim bat 7 if he's capable. And Asif is inexperienced.

For all the attention our top order and our bowling get, generally it's good enough. They aren't our weaknesses. In fact all our star/impact players lie either in the top 3, or part of the main bowling attack.

I'll go for a realistic line up. For instance I don't see Babar opening or Malik being dropped.

Fakhar
Imam ( if he fails badly , he should be dropped for the next LO series)
Babar
Malik
Sarfraz
Asif
Faheem
Shadab
Gohar
Shinwari
Hassan Ali

Subs

Umair Masood or another young keeper
Haris
Shazbinda
Amir
Agha Salman

We will need 2 spinners due to this conditions. Not convinced by Nawaz and Imad is more suited to T20s. Think he is easy to milk in ODIs. Imam will be selected even though I have my doubts about him as a LO player. If he doesn't perform in the next couple of ODIs we need to look at alternatives. I would drop Amir due to his poor performances against Zimbabwe. To only get 1 wicket just isn't good enough. He hasn't had a kick up the backside for poor performances since his return . This could be it. Went with Agha Salman as we need a off spinner for vartiey in these conditions. Can't just select all leggies and left arm spin. Don't know many other off spinners who are young as well, no use in selecting an oldie. We need to think about the next WC in the subcontinent too. The reason I have selected a back up for Sarfraz is because if he gets injured we are really screwed so we need to have someone learning off him and the support staff. The WC will have 10 games in a very short space of time , it would be a miracle if someone with such poor fitness didn't break down or feel fatigued. Haris doesn't deserve to be dropped as he did good in NZ. Think Mickey is done with Hafeez. No other openers have impressed in domestic so I went with someone who has been with the squad in Shazbinda.

5. Sarfaraz
6. Malik
7. Fahim
8. Shadab
9. Hassan
10. Usman
11. Amir
12. Sami aslam
13. Yasir shah/nawaz
14. Haris/hussain talat
15. Raees/Junaid

I think this is our top side, improved upon from CT trophy and getting whitewashed. Minnow bashing proves nothing but pakistan was consistently putting up 300+ which is something past pakistan couldn’t even do against these sides.

Sami aslam has talent and should be persisted with, just needs to overcome his mental block on the international stage and unleash the beast he is in List A. That will come with persistence and some confidence. Travelling with the squad will allow him to get used to it and work with mickey and grant flowers to improve his batting on the international level. Could serve as a great opener, but could also be developed as a middle order bat after babar.

Yasir is so far our only proven leggie after shadab so should either carry him or bring in nawaz in case we need a second spin option.

Haris can also part time spin, although im still scared he will throw his wicket away if played. Talat is technically an all rounder but he has great batting potential and can help to stabilize the middle order, shown more promise than haris recently.

Raees was very effective in the psl until his injury and came through for us in england when he was needed in the CT trophy. Junaid also proved himself valuable last year, but still only one can be on the bench. Usman deserves to start and has shown that somehow and someway he always finds a way to be among the wicket takers.

Can someone tell me when the Asia Cup is and will it be T20 format?

I know that, but even in the UAE he won't survive the pacers of Australia and New Zealand. He won't do well in the World Cup specially since its in England.

I disagree, I doubt he will be the stand out player for those series and as for South Africa, I think he will be eaten alive by Rabada, Steyn and Ngidi.

I would send the same squad that went to Zimbabwe apart from Yasir Shah

1) Sarfaraz Ahmed (C) (WK)
2) Asif Ali
3) Babar Azam
4) Faheem Ashraf
5) Fakhar Zaman
6) Haris Sohail - is a good back up to have in the squad and can bowl some left arm spin which could be useful in UAE
7) Hasan Ali
8) Imam-ul-Haq
9) Junaid Khan - tough on Rumman Raees but can't see him coming back over any other seamer, JK was ok against Zimbabwe
10) Mohammad Amir - it's a big tournament so I think he'll do well
11) Mohammad Hafeez - I know I'll get bashed but he's experienced and can bowl spin so may not be that bad in these conditions, also there's no alternatives for him in ODI's, I think he should be dropped from T20I's though
12) Mohammad Nawaz - can't see Imad Wasim coming back from injury and just pushing Nawaz out who hasn't done too badly
13) Shadab Khan
14) Shoaib Malik
15) Usman Shinwari

So no new faces as it's literally the same team that went to Zimbabwe apart from Yasir Shah as I assume squads will have to be 15 players exactly. The line up should look like:

1) Fakhar Zaman
2) Imam-ul-Haq
3) Babar Azam
4) Shoaib Malik
5) Sarfaraz Ahmed (C) (WK)
6) Asif Ali
7) Faheem Ashraf
8) Shadab Khan
9) Mohammad Nawaz - hard to pick an 11 without knowing who our first match will be against, if it's India then I wouldn't play Nawaz and would play Amir again. I just wish they'd announce the schedule.
10) Hasan Ali
11) Usman Shinwari

My squad for the Asia Cup 2018(in order of playing XI and subs) :

(Bear in mind this is my ideal XI,will post probable XI next) :

1)Fakhar Zaman
2)Imam-ul-Haq
3)Babar Azam
4)Haris Sohail
5)Sarfaraz Ahmed(C)(WK)
6)Asif Ali
7)Shadab Khan
8)Faheem Ashraf
9)Hassan Ali
10)Usman Khan Shinwari
11)Shaheen Afridi

12)Zafar Gohar
13)Junaid Khan
14)Hussain Talat
15)Sahibzada Farhan
16)Mohammad Amir

There should be a rotation policy for the fast bowlers.Amir should only play against India and Afghanistan.Hassan should also play against only India,Afganistan and Bangladesh).Shaheen to play against Afghanistan,India and Bangladesh and replaced by Zafar Gohar in remaining matches.Junaid Khan and Usman Shinwari to replace these two in the other matches.Batting should be flexible. For example if Pakistan are 250/5 with 7/8 overs left,Faheem Ashraf should bat ahead of Shadab Khan.

The above was my ideal XI,below is the probable XI and squad:

1)Fakhar Zaman
2)Imam-ul-Haq
3)Babar Azam
4)Shoaib Malik
5)Sarfaraz Ahmed(C)(WK)
6)Asif Ali
7)Shadab Khan
8)Faheem Ashraf
9)Imad Wasim(if fit)
10)Hasan Ali
11)M.Amir

12)Haris Sohail
13)Mohammad Nawaz
14)M.Hafeez
15)Junaid Khan
16)Usman Khan Shinwari

I don’t think Amir or Hassan will be rested for any match.I don’t think Haris will get a game and we’ll play basically the same lineup as against Zimbabwe in the 5th ODI.

Good squad. Though, I will replace Hafeez with Imad. There is no need for Hafeez when you already have Haris and Malik.

I'd like to see Agha Salman given a go, hard to see it happening though. Faheem should be given a bat in the match against the qualifier imo

Sarfraz Ahmad
Bilal Asif
Faheem Ashraf
Shadab Khan

Mohammad Amir
Junaid Khan
Yasir Shah
Umar Amin

I made two changes from previos squad which play against Zimbawe.

Bilal Asif in place of Mohammad Nawaz
Umar Amin in place of Mohammad Hafeez............

Captain:
Sarfraz

Openers;
Fakhar
Imam Ul Haq
Azhar Ali (Because he is part of squad in Champions Trophy and rested in series vs Zim regular member of team)

Middle Order;
Babar Azam
Shoaib Malik,
Asif Ali
Mohammad Hafeez,
Haris Sohail

All rounders:
Shahdab Khan
Fahim Ashraf
Imad Wasim (subject to fitness)/
M Nawaz

Bowlers:
Hasan Ali
Junaid Khan
U Shinwari
Muhammad Amir

Any LOI team with Malik and Sarfraz in the middle is bound to lose against ALL the good sides.

The squad is pretty settled.

Most importantly we need a quality second spinner. Select the best available spinner, rather than a bits and pieces cricketer.

Would also prefer if Hafeez is replaced with another back up opener.

Plus, add Shaheen to the squad.

Haris has been very disappointing since his comeback. Specially dislike how bad his fitness is. I doubt Babar will open in ODIs when he is well settled in the number three role. I think Talat might be the temp opener going into 2019 WC.

Harry was our best performer in the NZ series. No way should he be dropped...

This.

Never understood the hoopla with playing Sarfraz in the top 4. Mediocre player at best and needs to bat down at no. 7 below Shadab.

4) Malik
5) Sarfraz (wk, c)

11) Shinwari

12) Junaid

15) Haris sohail

After some times, I think PAK has a settled batting picks - good, bad only time'll tale, but FZ, Imam, Babar, Malik, Sarfraz & Asif are probably unanimous picks. I won't have picked Imam for ODI, but he has scored 3 hundreds in last 5 ODI - in Asia Cup as well, to win, PAK'll play 5 meaningful games .........

I think, biggest challenge is the bowling picks. Ideally, in UAE, teams should pick at least 25 overs of spin, if not 35 - which makes the selection of starting XI complicated. PAK should pick 2 specialist spinners, Malik, and 3 pacers. Since Malik & Shadab are offie & leggi, ideally the 3rd one should be SLAO, and a genuine spinner, not "all-rounder", hence Haris misses out. Which keeps only 3 spots for pacers - Amir & Hasan picks themselves - it's a tough call between Fahim or a specialist pacer. I think, in UAE, I'll keep Fahim - hard luck for SSA.

The question i am interested in is does Amir deserve to be in the squad for Asia Cup? He isn't performing and is blocking a space when we have a few fast bowlers who deserve a shot.

Considering Asia cup is all about India vs Pakistan, Amir has to be there against India, since he had Sharma and Kohli struggling against him last time they met. Having said that, I personally feel that amir strength is his first 3 overs. If u don't give him wkts in his first 18 balls then he becomes fairly easily playable.

Playing XI

Solid team that has no tailender

Middle Order

Replace Nawaz/Imad/Hafeez with a proper spinner and that's a strong squad.

Would probably add SSA too.

Some Pakistani players in the CPL can really make a push for the Asia Cup squad, namely Imad Wasim and Wahab Riaz. Malik will be there regardless, Sami definitely won't be there, I think the Irfan ship has sailed too but you never know if he does well! And I know what most PPers think of Tanvir so I won't even mention his name again :steyn

I don't think CPL will help the baldly out-of-favor Wahab. His ghastly melt-down against India at Edgbaston doesn't fade from the mind when you think about him in a green-shirt.

Imad Wasim could use these performances to ensure his comeback into the team, which I'm guessing is ineveitable anyway

Lol I’m just grateful we’ll have a decent squad here no matter what compared to the absolute sham last Asia Cup with grade A jobbers like Khuram Manzoor and Md Sami losing the plot against Bangladesh in a win game.

Playing XI against India should be

Fakhar
Babar/Imam
Babar/Haris
Malik
Asif Ali
Faheem
Shadab
Sarfraz (Should be used as a floater)
Imad/Nawaz
Hasan
Amir

Only 1 of Imam or Haris should play. Our lower middle order is explosive but to utilize it Sarfraz needs to be brought down and be used as a floater. If quick wickets fall, send him in to consolidate.

Fakhar Zaman
Babar Azam
Haris Sohail

perfect team in my opinion would be as follows:

SSA / Usman Shinwari

Asif Ali hasn’t had a chance to play against anyone else yet so it doesn’t make sense to exclude him from the playing 11 because his performance against Zimbabwe.

If failed against other teams and succeeded against Zimbabwe then I would understand, but he clearly hasn’t had a chance to test him self against the better teams.

Additionally he’s been proving himself in domestics for the last two years now. He performed in the PSL and the Pakistan Cup.
