What's new

What was the last thing you ate?

Yeah in the capital...interesting place...

Does a high level of poverty exist within Moldova (I'm only assuming this considering it shares a land border with Romania, which is known for its poverty)?

Plus, I hope you don't mind me asking this: can you please elaborate on what you mean by "interesting place"?

Moldova is the poorest country in Europe but you wouldn't know from its capital...a lot of nice cars around...no-one has been able to explain why i've seen more Mercedes on the road here than anywhere else ive been...and the Capital is actually really pleasant...nice to look at...nice lakes...food here is great...best Italian food ive had is here too...and people are more pleasant than Romania imo...

Its an odd place cos so much of its economy is built on remittances...a lot of kids who live with their grandparents while their parents are abroad mainly in Italy or Russia...

The cultural dynamic is interesting cos identity here is built around what language you speak...Moldavian/Romanian or Russian...and there is a lot of friction around this subject...most people speak both...and confusingly for me both at the same time...i've witnessed conversations where one person speaks in russian and the other person replies in moldavian...everyone it seems is ethnically mixed here...like part ukrainian/moldovan/bulgarian etc...

They also have a breakaway state Transnistria which I visited a little while back...not nearly as interesting as it sounds...

Poverty exists outside the capital and tbh thats where im interested in exploring...I learned from Georgia that the most interesting experiences were to be had in the villages...

One turn up for the books is the wealthiest Moldovans live in a city called Soroca which is inhabited by Romani's...and they are known for their lavish mansions...whilst Romani's struggle in the rest of the world...bizarrely over here they are extremely wealthy...another part i am looking to visit during my time here...

whole wheat pasta in spinach & bit of cheese cooked with a small quantity of butter , garlic bread [ home made ] , home made Pineapple and red bell pepper Salsa with ready made nachos which had melted cheese on them - tasty light meal at home :)

I love my mom-made palao.Tastes great.:)

Tin of canned mackerel. Only thing available at home and nobody does deliveries until 4pm.

jordans country crisp cereal for breakfast, cinnamon and raison bagel with tuna and sweetcorn for lunch then a pancake with nutella :)

Ate 'apna-style' pizza after a long duration (although I had eaten a slice on Bonfire Night, I wasn't at all satisfied with the experience as I was restricted to a solitary slice) and I probably consumed too many slices - 5 from the family-sized pizza that was provided.

Couldn't resist consuming another pizza slice (cold) - for some reason, I've always found cold pizza slices are less filling than warm ones, which to me is actually more beneficial than detrimental as it allows one to continue eating pizza without feeling the compulsion to stop.

sesame snap for tea. Dinner was paratha and chapli kebab roll with chilli sauce. Then had some yoghurt with sugar and fruit and nut muesli

i am trying to pester them to do home made golgappas on Thursday for dinner with dahi bhallas . Even the puris/round golgappas are made with multigrain wheat & the stuffing is chana, boiled aluu, boondi, sprouts ,imli chutney & that super masala paani :)

Just had dinner, constituted of 3 different meats; fish, chicken and lamb kebabs. I feel absolutely bloated.

Thanks for this, a lovely insight into what I regard as a country which is not too well-known.

If you don't mind me asking this, I've heard that some countries such as Albania have gangsters somewhat prevalent within their communities - does this also apply to Moldova?

Like many post Soviet states lawlessness was rife from 1991 onwards...like Georgia people have seen a lot of nasty things...but its relatively safe here...the biggest beneficiaries during the period of transition were gangsters and essentially it is they who now hold positions of power in the government...corruption here is rife...

Do they pervade society and communities any more?

By the way, how is the standard of education within Moldova?

I've just eaten another chicken roll. Despite stating that I am harbouring the intention to become healthier by eating healthier food and adopting a rigorous exercise routine, surely one can't expect me not to eat chicken rolls when they are offered for supper in the evening - my mother's cooking is simply far too good! :)

For breakfast, I had two eggs ( over-easy ) with hot sauce and Bread.

For lunch, I went to a Chinese Buffet. Started off with Hot & Soup with a side of Onion Rings, Egg Rolls, Spring Rolls and Cream Cheese Wontons. Then had Fried Rice with Beef & Brocoli and Sizzling Chicken. A couple of rolls of Sushi. For dessert, I had my favorite Green Tea Ice Cream.

For Dinner, I cooked Chicken Vindaloo with Basmati Rice.

palak & sweetcorn baked with cheese on top , veg pulao which had carrots, peas & aluu along with cucumber raita .

yesterday was ashura after majlis there was vegetable palau and lovely pink sherbet. Then after had cookies and stuff like swiss roll. Then some pizza, while apple pie with custard, sticky toffee pudding and halva.

tonight was the golgappa & dahi bhalla night - stuffed :)

just had dinner which was mattar paulo with some jerk and tandoori chicken(jerk chicken and tandoori chicken, not both put together)

I've just consumed a whole packet of Maryland cookies with milk - I acknowledge that it's not exactly healthy and I should really be making an effort to become healthier but once you start eating one, you literally can't stop.

Regarding my plan to eat more healthily and exercise more regularly, I've decided to start this routine from tomorrow as I will also hopefully buy a pedometer to help as well.

To be honest, this is the case virtually every day for me (but not today, I'm resisting the temptation to eat a combination of cheerios and weetabix at this current moment). Maybe I can feed myself on some Nusrat qawalis?

Listening to the qawalis, which it seems like you really enjoy, might help you as getting involved with something you have a fondness for keeps you focused on that and so other thoughts won't come up as much apart from the occasional rumble from your stomach if you really have a craving for it.

i ate a kela, some mango, that red pinkish little thing i think its a pomegranate and some runjus. And some baddam mixed in cold dud

Going out for a late dinner ,will post later the details but i suspect some Murgi is def on :)

for lunch i had a bun with with fish fingers, cheese slices, butter ketchup and mayonnaise and just now some salmon pasta on half a bun yum:)

dinner was butter chicken , kaju curry in white gravy & garlic nan . starters were fish fingers with mayo . dessert was good ole vanilla icecream with hot chocolate .

spaghetti meatballs for dinner and then prawn crackers, sticky rice and prawn curry
