"When I used to play cricket, there were no ICC awards": Umar Akmal

This slob dropped Malik at slip and nearly cost Quetta the game. Overweight and past his sell by date.

“Umar Akmal is a very talented cricketer,” said Sarfaraz in a post-match press conference after Quetta Gladiators beat Karachi Kings on Saturday.

“Every player has to go through such good and bad phases,” he said about Akmal who scored 11 and 4, respectively in the first two matches of the PSL 8. “If he can spend a bit more time on the crease, it will definitely help us.”

Sarfaraz Ahmed should not fall in the trap of defending selections like that. He is there to win a tournament.

These are the fans that have contributed to this clown’s downfall.

I am not a fan but Pakistan management is clueless in grooming any batsman who is not accumulator types. Only Babar, Rizwan, Misbah types can succeed in that setup. Forget Umar Akmal, just look at the career graph of Haider Ali vs Shubnam Gill. Its sad to see Haider Ali becoming a slogger.

Seems a gonner from PSL if Hafeez plays a half-decent innings today

I wonder if we'll see him again at PSL8.

Struggled for form and doesn't look the fittest either.

Seems like it's a toss-up between him and Hafeez.

Bye Bye Umar Akmal. It was frustrating to follow your stop-start career from across the border.

I feel he has the skills but his mental side of things is missing - he is just too distracted and worrying about things other than cricket, even when on the field.

Too late for him anyway , old and unfit. Feet not moving well.

PSL has proved it is a quality platform where the average gets found out big time.

Even Hafeez seems disinterested to play. He promoted everyone over himself in the first match. Why doesn't team management give opportunity to a hungry young emerging player instead? Hafeez can do mentoring/analysis job.

The fear of missing out...

He is history now. He could've achieved a lot but didn't seem dedicated.

One of those cricketers who couldn't maximize potentials.

Umar Akmal seemed quite jolly after the loss yesterday. Was interested in mingling with the Lahore players.

Man is so irrelevant that any action by him seems so desperate that its embarrassing. I also love how Rashid and Raza just ignore him.

Its honestly so disheartening to see such a talented player amount to this but Umar Akmal shouldn't be bothered, he will always have supporter in Rana.

Shows how poor Nadeem omar thinking is by not only selecting rather retaining him . If that was not enough . He brought in hafeez as well .

Would love to hear from Sarfaraz as to why Umar was dropped…and yet he remains in the team that too as the captain lol

Umar Akmal 43*(14) to help QG to a respectable total!

Our players are also to blame as they don't listen to management. Misbah for a while wanted Umar to bat as a finisher in LOIs as we were lacking power hitters. Umar though let the Kohli comparisons get to his head and took that as an insult.

A lot of people have been chatting a lot of….

Well hopefully you all :shhh

They will always find a way to put down certain players Umar had the best strike rate at last years PSL and was one the best batsmen in the recent 50 over Pakistan Cup but one or two low scores in T20 was all it took for the ridiculing to start again.

The most confusing thing is Umar being a better batsman than Iftikhar but Iftikhar is treated well by Quetta and Pakistan for some reason.

This innings at 300 strike rate should show Sarfraz why his teams lack of power hitting has them last in the table.

Why would you want Umar to be a finisher when he clearly didn't had the ability to control his nerves?
If you make Dhoni opener and Sehwag finisher, whose fault it is?

Do you think he would control is nerves if he was batting up the order ?

He had a very good game at #6 in ODIs. Avg close to 40 with a 90+ strike rate. He couldn't be relied upon to build long innings but his cameos were useful. Power hitting was his strength. Misbah recognized this and wanted him to continue in a position where he could contribute with this strength. We also lacked decent options for those positions then.

I don't know who is to blame- Captains, coaches, fans, media or Umar himself but one thing i can say for sure is that Umar is a wasted talent. He could have been a big name. He had courage, range of strokes and desire.

What a talent he was. I would not say that PCB has wasted him. He himself has wasted himself. I think PCB should introduce personal managers for such players who can groom them and help them stay intact.
