"When I'm not meeting criteria (for modern-day cricket), I'll think about going away" : M Hafeez

Mohammad Hafeez in an interview with ARY News:

"I always try to share my experience, whenever I feel a youngster needs a helping hand, I try to help. Sarfaraz is the captain and handles everything but I gave some advice that Shaheen is a youngster and he shouldn't be put under too much pressure, he should be allowed to express himself. I told Shaheen to do whatever he is thinking of, with conviction. He is gaining experience and in pressure situations, his response is good. In that incident, it's just that Sarfaraz should allow youngsters to perform with conviction"

"I am fulfilling this role for Pakistan cricket for many years and giving my services. This is what I want, until I am playing for Pakistan I wish to perform in both facets. Whenever I get a chance, I try to fulfil the team's requirements"

"It's wrong to think bad of a team because they lost. As a team, we played outstanding cricket against Australia and outclassed them in all three aspects of the game. It's not that they played badly or that they are a poor team, it's just that we played better cricket than them"

"If we take the same momentum, positive attitude and skills against New Zealand, which we should do as we have the winning momentum, we should do well. NZ is a good team but we need to be prepared with our skills and execute plans in match situations"

"You play to gain the number one position in every format, obviously we need to work on some things and keep driving towards betterment. Test cricket is a challenge for us as a team. For us to gain a good ranking, we need to perform well home and away. In T20Is, we have won 10 series in a row and we need to do the same type of thing in Tests and ODIs, and with similar performances. We need to win home and away to improve our ranking"

"I would like to congratulate Shoaib Malik for being blessed with a baby boy"

"Cricket is a challenge and at the highest level, you need to fulfil any criteria that's set, as they keep changing over a period of time. Fitness is important no matter which format you play, you need to keep improving which I am always working on"

"I would like to keep serving Pakistan. My first priority is Pakistan. Parallel are many options but I keep Pakistan as my priority. I motivate myself for that. I would like to keep playing until I can fulfil that criteria and standard that is required in modern day cricket. The day I feel that I am not meeting that criteria by any means, I will think about going away from cricket"

Hafeez has done well recently.

I think the key part of this is:

"The day I feel that I am not meeting that criteria by any means, I will think about going away from cricket"

Let's see if that happens. Too often players and athletes in other sports don't know when to retire.

I always feel that Hafeez gets too much hate on this forum. He adds so much as an all rounder and we tend to judge him only as a batsmen. Would walk into most teams in the world!

Hope he sticks around. Especially needed in our ODI team (look at the asia cup results if you want to see the imbalance of the team without him)

Whilst he is right about letting Shaheen do what he does. I don't agree with his methods, as I've seen it a few times on the pitch now it's as if he feels he's captaining the side, and instead of offering advice to sarfraz, attempts to overrule him and offers his own potentially conflicting advice straight to the player.

Hafeez looks legendary in limited overs cricket on slow low pitches.
Lets see how he deals with Steyn and Co in South Africa. That tour will be make or break for Hafeez.

Apart from the dropped catches, Hafeez hasnt been too bad in LOIs.

The problem is, WC 2019 is in England not in UAE.

He cant bat in top 3 in non-Asian conditions.

He's already made a comeback when he's near 40 officially possibly over 40 but he will go when the time is right maybe after another 3-4 years when he's close to 45 gracefully blessed in all facets M Hafeez.

I wonder how someone would feel if the road-side vendor outside their work place starts telling him when he should retire from his job.

How much ego must we as fans have to think that we get to have a say on when a player should retire?

He can bat but problem is the random blocking that comes out of nowhere in loi. He should bat freely and he can be an asset for Pakistan because we don't have any other player .

So is he retiring after SA tour? Because the guy simply can’t bat on pitches that offer movement and bounce, he is inconsistent in tests, he should retire and open the way for guys like sami aslam or shan masood who have been ignored because of him. In LOI he must retire after the world cup, he has played some good innings recently, ideally retiring gracefully before the world cup would be the best thing, but i have no doubt on the fact that he will not do so :D

He's main priority in england is economical bowling, so the other bowlers have runs to attack, see CT 2017
