Sri lanka could have declared when they overhauled Indian score and Jayasuriya got out without breaking Lara's record , however everyone batted even after that till the end of day 5 and score some 100s and 50s

In those days, Jayasurya was running a freak show...For a couple of years around the 1996 WC, there was no batsman who came even remotely close to the powerhouse Jayasurya had become. ODI or tests, he was belting fast bowlers around the park like no one had ever done that before and no one after until Sehwag came. What a player Jayasurya was!

Draw was an acceptable result back then. Only in 2010s results started coming in most matches. I think couple of years back there was a record set for highest result oriented percentage for a calendar year

In that match Nilesh kulkarni made debut. He created an India record for taking a wicket in first ball of his career in that match lol Next wicket never came. It is still the record for India. NObody equalled it.

Naa, he had one more Test wicket. Nilesh Kulkarni lived in my neighborhood (he also played occasionally in our gully cricket team), so all of us kids back then followed his career. Poor guy, what an awful international start - could never recover after that match. But played long with the Mumbai ranji team.

I think commies like shastri, bhogle and news papers severe criticism got to them.Even dravid said he was criticising that pitch with Murali(in front of all) on the match day.He questioned the dead pitch use when Mulari was there .Lanka even though never changed .Again they brought up the pan cake of 664 partnership runs pitch against sa.

it was a heavily rain affected game and there was never going to be any result.

Something similar happened in the 3rd Test when Pakistan toured them in 2001

Nothing wrong with the pitch, it was the standard flat wicket of the 90’s. It’s just that the bowling attack was a joke and the captain was Tendulkar, the most clueless captain in history.

This is why Test cricket is much stronger today than it was in the 90’s. England would probably score 1,200+ in 271 overs on that pitch against that Indian attack led by a garbage captain like Tendulkar.

That was a horrible wicket and this was in the 90's when SL did not think they could win Tests against India. If you see, India played couple of series during that time with SL and all the games were drawn. Both teams just piled up runs and SL had no intention of pushing for results. The trend changed only in 2001 when India were playing a depleted squad with Sachin missing and with Dinesh Mongia, Hemang Badani and Shiv Sundar Das. Kumble was still missing due to injury. That was the first series after 1993 which saw a result between the two sides. The 1997 series was a boring one with all games drawn on flat decks througout.

Still remember watching that match. I was 11 years old back then. With that Indian bowling attack on that flat highway, the GOAT Aussie team of the 2000's could have probably scored 1500 runs in an innings.​

The scoring record is not always a matter of ability but intention. Many teams over the years have been in a very healthy position to go on and on to post a massive total but rightly didn’t go for it in order to push for a victory, keep the game interesting.

Similarly many individual batters have been in a position to go for the world record but either got out trying to score quick runs or faced declarations to push for a win.

I think it was a failure of leadership of both teams to not come to a mutual understanding on this and especially on Sri Lanka who should have in the spirit of the game declared much earlier. That was Sri Lanka of the old. They enjoyed being in the news for the right or wrong reasons and Ranatunga enjoyed defying common belief.

Recently England declared at 850 but they scored these runs in 150 overs and actually batted a few overs less than what Pakistan team did in scoring 550 something. Sri Lankans on the contrary played slow and boring cricket for 3 days. Even Jayasuriya only batted at a SR of 58*. Sehwag was batting at 100 SR on a regular basis and against Sri Lankans he smashed 290 in little over 40 overs once. That’s intent.
