"When you compare Pakistan to other countries, then our situation is much better" : PM Imran Khan

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan said Thursday Pakistan's situation in terms of coronavirus and related response is "much better" than the other countries.

PM Imran said the real number of coronavirus cases in Pakistan is less than the projected one as of April 30. "We imposed a lockdown when we had 26 cases and the public also cooperated with us.

"When you compare Pakistan to other countries, then our situation is much better. We were assuming that our hospitals would be full by now but then our situation is much better," he said.

The premier said he spoke to Hassan Rouhani and Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, the Iranian and Egyptian presidents, respectively.

"Iran has now decided to close large gatherings such as weddings and schools and open up all businesses," the PM said. "They also fear that their losses due to unemployment are bigger than that from the coronavirus."

Egypt, Iran, and Pakistan

The Cairo leadership, he said, "decided on the first day to lock down large gatherings but they tried to make sure the construction sector remained working".

"Egypt's and our tally is the same and their economic condition is similar to ours. Our lockdown was much stricter than them but the deaths remained the same.

"We decided to share both our experiences in the future," PM Imran added, noting that his team of ministers knew that daily wagers, labourers, waiters, and taxi drivers would be the "worst-affected" of all.

"I would like to congratulate Dr Sania [Nishtar] for the Ehsaas [Emergency Cash] programme. It is a proud moment for us."

The prime minister explained that the money disbursed to deserving people was based on relevant data and not political affiliations. Sindh, he noted, received the highest number of payments under the Ehsaas programme.

"I was very happy to see that the lowest strata of society could get the money. We have so far distributed Rs81 billion," he said.

New programme for unemployed

"The second programme we are starting... I had decided to keep the money [that was] gathered from the relief fund for the unemployed," he added, noting that an SMS campaign would be launched soon and that the new project to support people out of jobs would require proof of unemployment — a plan the government was working on.

"For every rupee donated, the government will match it with Rs4 in the fund," the premier said, adding that the 'Corona Relief Tigers Force' had been informed to set up a desk in each union council to check who has been unemployed.

"There are many white-collar workers who have been unemployed and who will not come forward," he said. "We will use the Imams of mosques to know who the unemployed people are.

Overseas Pakistanis 'our biggest asset'

"We will provide [assistance to] them under the fund," he stated, before expressing his gratitude to Industries and Production Minister Hammad Azhar for launching a programme for the small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

With regard to the overseas Pakistanis stranded abroad due to international flights disrupted over coronavirus pandemic, PM Imran said he understood that they wished to return home.

"I have instructed Moeed [Yusuf] to give all the details and tell the difficulties in bringing them back," he said, referring to his special assistant on National Security Division and Strategic Policy Planning.

"Overseas Pakistanis are our biggest asset," he noted. "It is our responsibility to take care of them and I have instructed our embassies to take care of them."

The PM, however, added that he was aware of the pressure on the embassies.

Exporting ventilators

PM Imran said his focal person on coronavirus, Dr Faisal Sultan, was tasked to coordinate with the doctors and provinces, explaining that "our policy is made on the analysis they share" and the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) took that into account before moving ahead.

He said he recently learnt that different Pakistani industries had started making ventilators at a very cheap price. "We are thinking of exporting those items," he said.

Decision on lockdown strategy next week: Umar

Federal Minister for Planning, Development, and Special Initiatives Asad Umar said the government will make a decision on the lockdown strategy after May 9 next week. Umar said he had urged the premier to call an NCOC meeting next week to discuss the issue further.

He said that when coronavirus cases were first reported in the country, the government was concerned that the situation will get out of hand.

"The cases and death toll both started to increase but the situation did not get out of hand," he said. "Since the past three days, more than 20 deaths have been reported on a daily basis. There is a concern that the death rate will rise further [in the coming days]," he said.

Umar said that the poor and the destitute were bearing the brunt of the coronavirus impact. He called on people to be responsible and protect themselves and in turn, others from the coronavirus.

COVID-19 not spreading as fast in Pakistan: Dr Sultan

Dr Sultan, the PM's focal person on coronavirus, said the Pakistani authorities were keeping an eye on the coronavirus situation as it was evolving in Pakistan and around the world.

"We are analysing it [data] and taking decisions accordingly. We have enough data for Pakistan to ensure that accurate decisions are being taken," he added.

He underscored that while the government has come to the conclusion that the pandemic is not spreading as fast in Pakistan compared to Europe, it did not mean that people let go of precautionary measures.

"If we adopt these [precautionary measures] we will be able to take better care of ourselves and the people around us which will enable the government to relax these restrictions," he said.

Such statements have a bad habit of biting one back - Hope IK is right.

Everyone’s better than UK, USA, italy, spain, France currently.

Question is will developing countries still be better and prepared if second wave comes, coz developed ones have stockpiled for second wave and are utilizing current data for future management.

Also developed countries print money like its nothing..

Easy statements to make for developing countries as any positive is a big thing.

He was specifically talking about the current situation where Pakistan is ahead of the modelling, unlike many other countries. This is in fact true.

Focusing on the one line without providing the context behind it is just poor journalism but what else can you expect from Geo.

Well, recent study has shown that the virus does not survive for longer than a minute in temperatures above 75F. It was presented in White House press conference last week.

Could the hot temperature in Pakistan and other countries be the reason for lower deaths? I say its a possibility

Yes he is Right for some unknown reasons the developing countries have done better. Many says maleria or TB vaccine have played a role.

It’s possible our immunity is much better as we are exposed to much harsher conditions ? Am not kidding , when am in US or Europe I can drink late night and be up in the morning by 5:Am fresh for work . I can’t imagine doing that in India .

Printing money can backfire big time if the economy does not have a V shape recovery . US too nearly a decade to normalise their balancehseet after the actions they took in 2008 . No reason to believe we will have the same results this time .

we are starting to stockpile on PPE as we are now producing our own. Same with masks so theoretically we should have enough equipment for the second phase.

Also medical data collection is now happening and the ehsaas program for welfare has kicked into gear. They are building blocks and keeping ahead of the curve has helped both our countries. It has bough precious time. It may not be enough but I am hopeful.

What has govt done for the dehari dars the daily wagers on every road there are daily wagers sitting idle waiting for work/labour they are suffering not bcz of lockdown but the affluent class is hiding in house and allowing any labour/ painter/plumber for work so its the role of govt to take care of them

That’s a wrong statement to make.

Why the comparison?

You don’t see the Nzl PM who did an excellent job in almost eliminating this problem from her country make such claims.

Just focus on the ongoing situation on hand.

Focus shouldn't be compromised.
But fight against stupidity shouldn't be compromised either.
Nzl doesn't have mafias as shameless and influential as we have in Pakistan so we have to control it at two fronts, virus and stupid mafias who will exploit everything to extract personal benefits.

I see you criticise the government for everything that they do. It is easy to govern a country that has no reserves. The govt still has done a lot for the poor people by distributing each family 12,000 rupees and creating green jobs for people. Plus, the lockdown in Pakistan is not even that strict.

They did QE for all these years , imo the reason their currency doesn’t get affected is world still trades in dollars, oil, gold etc.. China and OIC have to stop trading in dollar for them to have an affect if not they would again get away with printing money.

Highest number of tests conducted yesterday: Dr Zafar Mirza

Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Health Dr Zafar Mirza has said that yesterday Pakistan conducted the highest number of tests yet.

"We conducted 9,164 tests conducted yesterday, the highest so far and we expect the testing capacity to also increase further," he said.

"Most number of patients in last 24 hours were from Sindh. They reported 622 cases yesterday. The highest number of deaths reported in 24 hours is 32, this was reported yesterday," Mirza said.

"Out of 32 deaths, 31 occurred at hospitals and one at home. 14 of these people were on ventilators.

"Pakistan's death rate is still less than the projected numbers and secondly when we see the worldwide situation, it is far less than that. If you take care of yourself, it is guaranteed that you and your family will stay safe."

Prime Minister Imran Khan reiterated that the country could not sustain a prolonged lockdown as labourers and the daily wagers were suffering.

“The entire world is trying to restart its economy. Places like New York where thousands are dying have also decided to re-open their industries,” PM Imran said at the launch of a web portal supporting individuals rendered jobless due to the pandemic.

“Even rich governments are reopening because they realise they cannot keep the country under lockdown for long. This is why we have decided to open our construction industry,” he said.

“Never in the history of this country have we given such huge incentives to the construction industry as we have done now,” he noted.

The prime minister said the main aim of his government was to make sure the people of the country were not burdened.

“This is why we brought down petrol prices by Rs30. Earlier we brought the price of diesel down by Rs27. Even India does not have these low prices,” PM Imran remarked.

He added that since the price of petrol was slashed, prices of everything should fall as well.

Speaking about the web portal, the prime minister said it will help those who have lost their jobs due to the lockdown.

“People can register on the website where their credentials will be checked,” he said.

The prime minister also thanked everyone who had donated to the Corona Relief Fund, saying that he himself was monitoring the Fund and its resources.

“I want to thank all those who have donated to the Fund. All the money will be audited and everything will be told to the nation,” the prime minister said.

He added, “We have brought a transparent system. For every rupee donated to the Fund, the government will give four times that to the needy. Through this Fund, we are trying to reach as many people as possible.”

He continued, “The public needs to work with the government to combat the virus. They [public] need to take precautionary measures. If I had tested positive, it would have been my responsibility to make sure I self-isolated and quarantined.”

“The public needs to play its part in this fight against coronavirus,” PM Imran said. “We do not know when a vaccine for the virus will be made available. If we have to live with this for the next six months or a year we need to have a plan.

“The more discipline we are the more easily we would be able to defeat it. The public needs to practice social distancing on their own. We cannot force them to do anything.”

.... And the obsession with india never ends.

.... And the obsession with india never ends.

It's not an obsession, it makes sense to compare yourself to the other big country in the subcontinent and also a country that you share your largest border with.

You are right. It should have been the case. But I don't get that vibe when I read the other parts.

Having read all these remarks, I would have been frustrated If i were a pakistani due to lack of leadership from the PM. He always talks about a plan. "We need a plan." Everyone knows it. But what is the plan?

The rest, all it implies that he is helpless and tries to give justification based upon circumstances of other countries. He now is praying somehow magics will happen where corona will go away and the economy will be stable.

He is a humble, simple person. But probably not someone whom you want in a crisis as a leader as he doesn't have answers to any questions and fails to integrate the different parts of the system.

Let me ask this, Do province govt still have full trust in judgement of IK?

.... And the obsession with india never ends.

He's completely correct.

Fuel prices here have largely been unchanged for a month. When they did drop by Rs. 3, lo and behold the tax component came through and gobbled up the fall.

We middle class are the losers holding the empty barrel as always.

TGK, a serious question. Does IK inspire you as a leader?

He was a great captain in cricket. He seems like tries hard to make the system transparent. But what I feel is, his statements gives the sense of 'giving up'. It's like, you are exhausted after a long fight and now you are just hoping things would go to normal though you feel like fighting doesn't matter anymore.

How do you see IK as a leader?

Which country has a specific plan to wipe out COVID-19? Especially amongst the ones with populations in the hundreds of millions?

The only plan is to try and increase testing, and try and have some sort of a lockdown in place in order to make sure the number of cases remain under control. Stabilizing the economy is very important, as are welfare programs. Without those, people will begin to starve, or they will uprise.

No provinces have any major issues besides Sindh, where Bilawal and the Bhutto clan are up to their usual tricks. Just go and watch IK's presser today where he and his cabinet outlined the measures they are taking. And compare that with the whining by Bilawal yesterday. The only thing that PPP is interested in is blaming the federal govt. for anything and everything.

Covid-19 not as fatal in Pakistan as in other countries: Asad Umar

Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Asad Umar, during a briefing, said Covid-19 has thankfully not proved as fatal in Pakistan as in other countries.

"If you see foreign media and read articles, you will see the term 'flatten the curve' [...] Even they aren't focusing on ending it but limiting it because the former would require very strict actions."

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Asad Umar has said that a decision regarding a relaxation in the lockdown will be taken with all the provinces' consensus after May 9.

“The government will decide its post-May 9 strategies after a meeting of the National Coordination Committee,” Umar told media in Islamabad on Sunday.

The federal minister said the decision to ease the lockdown will be taken in such a manner that it does not paralyse the country’s healthcare system. “Restrictions in the country will be eased gradually in order to provide livelihood to the people.”

He added, “We have significantly enhanced the capacity of our healthcare system. We currently have 1,400 ventilators for coronavirus patients and 900 more will be added in two months. At present, there are 35 coronavirus patients on ventilators.”

Umar added that the country now had the capacity to develop medical equipment and soon the domestic production of ventilators would start.

“The country has 55 functional labs and we have the capacity to carry out over 14,000 coronavirus tests daily,” he said, adding that the testing, tracking and quarantine system had been made functional.

Speaking about the spike in the country’s death toll over the last few days, Umar said that at the beginning of the pandemic, the country was registering a death or two daily whereas now that had significantly gone up. “There has been an average of 24 deaths in the country over the last six days,” he noted.

“This is not good news and it goes to show how important it is to practice precaution,” Umar remarked.

He continued, “This number is likely to increase in May but will not get out of hand. The government has been increasing its testing capacity. Today our testing capacity is significantly better than what it was two months ago. Right now we have the capacity to perform 20,000 tests each day.”

The minister once again reiterated that the pandemic situation was not as fatal as it was in Europe and the United States.

“The fatality rate in Pakistan is far less compared to the United States, the UK and Spain,” he said, stressing that the citizens needed to adopt precautionary measures in order to stem the spread of the virus.

He added that the economic impact of the lockdown was far more serious on Pakistan’s economy than the western countries.

“In Europe, there have been thousands of deaths and even those countries are now easing restrictions carefully because even those countries know they cannot shut down everything forever,” he added.

yes he does. Everytime he speaks about the poor and then inacts projects like Ehsaas is inspiring. When he comes to address and says dont worry im here that is reassuring. His attempts to fight no matter what is inspiring.

I look at it this way. He has ensured that a country with practically no real health care has managed to fight one of the greatest plagues to hit Pakistan. Whats not inspiring about that? To stand and fight even if he has to do it alone..

IK gives me hope for a better future for Pakistanis. Compare him to any other recent leader in pakistani politics and he is head and shoulders above them.

.... And the obsession with india never ends.

Dont flatter yourself, he was giving perspective. Here in the UK, the death rate is constantly compared to Germany's. IK has been excellent so far and IA the Virus remains under control, i think we will have a spike but that is a problem everywhere. He has been calm, done what he could, and if you compare that to the desperation of our opposition, who are literally praying for deaths for political capital, IK loves and cares PK people and thats why IA the people will stay with him

Need to start lifting lockdown slowly but gradually, says premier

Prime Minister Imran Khan has said that the lockdown in the country has to be lifted slowly but gradually to mitigate the economic impact on the people of Pakistan.

"We need to lift the lockdown so that people can get jobs. But we have to be careful because all of our efforts will go in vain if people don't take precautionary measures."

The premier added that this will be where the volunteer force will come in. "You will go to union councils and publicise the government's guidelines."

Government to ease lockdown in coming days: PM Imran

Prime Minister Imran Khan informed members of the national and provincial assemblies on Monday that the government has decided that lockdown will gradually be eased in the coming days keeping in view the ground realities, especially the economic situation of the country and the problems of the common man.

Subsequently, the premier directed the MNAs and MPAs to not only play their full role in providing relief to the people in this hour of need but also encourage the people to take precautionary measures so that the spread of the coronavirus could effectively be stopped.

While addressing the MNAs and MPAs, who were stationed at commissioners’ offices and other locations, the premier told the legislatures that comprehensive SOPs based on security measures have been prepared for each sector and public representatives should play an active role in implementing them.

“Keeping in view the ground realities, especially the economic situation of the country and the problems of the common man, the government has decided that the lockdown will be gradually eased in the coming days,” a statement issued by the PM office quoted Imran as saying in his address to the legislatures.

The Prime Minister said that the government was trying its best to provide all possible relief to the people in view of the coronavirus situation, adding that despite the difficult circumstances, the government announced a total economic package of Rs1.25 trillion.

Imran said that the process of providing Rs12,000 to 12.5 million deserving families of Pakistan was being ensured on the basis of transparency and merit.

In addition, he said, a special program has been launched to provide relief to labourers and workers and directed all elected public representatives to ensure that all the beneficiaries in their constituencies could easily avail the relief package provided by the government.

Addressing the members, the prime minister said that it was very encouraging that people from all walks of life across the country came forward to assist in the efforts and provide relief to the people in the difficult situation created by the pandemic.

The premier added that TORs have been prepared for the use of Corona Relief Tiger Force, comprising one million volunteers. He said that the Tiger Force will not only help the district administration in providing relief to the people but it will also carry out important activities such as assisting in the implementation of security measures in public places and keeping the management informed about the stock situation of essential items at utility stores.

The Prime Minister said that a pilot project has already been launched in Sialkot in this regard on the basis of which Tiger Force can now fully be utilized.

Meanwhile, Minister for Planning Asad Umar briefed the meeting on the situation and prevention of coronavirus.

On Sunday, Umar feared that around 18 million people could lose their jobs in the country because of the lockdown imposed to curb the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

“According to the calculations of the Pakistan Institute of Development Economics [PIDE], between 20 million and 70 million people in the country might fall below the poverty line,” he said addressing a press briefing at the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) on Covid-19.

Umar, who heads the NCOC, had noted that an average of 24 people were dying because of Covid-19 in the country every day for the last six days and if the situation carried one in a similar manner, there would be 720 deaths each month.

ISLAMABAD: Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi on Monday said that Pakistan’s infection and growth rate is different as compared to Europe and the United States, ARY News reported.

Addressing the National Assembly session, the foreign minister said the country’s death ratio was 2.17% compared to the global ration of 6.8%, adding that Pakistan is ahead of other South Asian countries in terms of testing capacity for Covid-19.

He said that Pakistan has increased its coronavirus testing capacity to 20,000 per day and there are 70 functional labs across the country to conduct Covid-19 tests.

“When the first case was reported on February 26, the country’s testing capacity was at 100. “Our testing capacity now stands at 20, 000 tests per day,” he added.

He said that govt was striving to further enhance the testing capacity for the virus.

The National Assembly session was summoned last week by President Dr Arif Alvi and commenced Monday to debate Pakistan’s current coronavirus situation.

The session was chaired by the Deputy Speaker NA, Qasim Suri. Legislators from the treasury and the opposition participated in the debate on the situation arising after the outbreak of coronavirus.

The coronavirus tests have been declared mandatory for the lawmakers attending the session of the assembly.
