He did not posess the talent of a Viv richards or the technical correctness or elegance of brother Greg but when the chips were down Ian Chappell was the best batsmen in the world of his era. Many experts and great players like Dennis Lillee and Andy Roberts feel that Ian was the better batsmen than brother Greg in a crisis and overall Gary Sobers and Imran Khan rate him even ahead.Michael Holding gave more credit to Ian's 449 runs in the 1975-76 5-1 triumph of Australia than Greg Chappell's 702 runs. The West Indian quartet prized Ian's wicket more than Greg's .In 1979 Sobers ranked Ian Chapell as the best batsmen in the world, ahead of Viv,Barry Gavaskar and Greg. For many to resurrect team from the grave from the depths of despair to reach height of glory Ian was the ultimate man.Ian Chappell blended the tenacity of a soldier with the skill of a surgeon.Arguably the most combative of al Aussie batsmen.
Alan Border and Steve Waugh may have been as good in bating for your llfe but it was still Ian who would niggle the oponents more.
At one down Ian amassed 4279 runs at an average of 50.94 which was remarkable.Greg Chappell overshadowed him statistically by some margin but aginst supreme pace or on fast or bad wicket Ian displayed more skill .Ian was at his best in 1968-69 v West Indies when he scored 5 centuries against them.He also scored 4 centuries against the rest of the world xi in 1972.In ODIs Ian had the best batting average of hi9s era of over 48.
I rate him a better player of genuine pace than Javed Miandad and brother Greg and as good a player of spin as Border if not better. My best knock of his was his 156 out of 328 against West Indies at Perth in 1975-76.Unlike brother Greg was successful in Indian condition sin 1969.
To me overall he ranks just a shade below Miandad,Dravid,Steve Waugh ,and Border .Overall I rate him ahead of stars like Zaheer Abbas,Majid,Gower,Mark Waugh ,Martin Crowe or even Clive Lloyd as a batsmen.Probably amongst the top 40 batsmen of all time and in a photo with greats like Peter May or Colin Cowdrey.
