We are no. 1 T20 ranked side.
No. 6 in ODIs
No. 7 in Test

But where our team truly belongs currently? If we average all three formats are we really no. 7 or 8 team in the world?

I like to think we are just above Afghanistan.

Irrespective of what the official rankings have indicated, we have consistently been a 5th/6th/7th ranked side on average in all formats in this decade.

When we reached the number 1 in Tests in 2016 for three seconds due to a technicality, we were not even among the top 3 sides in reality. Similarly, we were a bog average T20 side during our so-called winning streak from 2016 to 2018. Our flaws were not exposed due to multiple factors.

No matter who we select, what combination we field, who we chose as captain, coach or selector, we are a deeply mediocre cricket nation now. India, England, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa are all better than us. Yes South Africa are going through a tough time, but they have greater pedigree and will bounce back while we will remain mediocre.

Our competition now is teams like Bangladesh, West Indies, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan etc. If cricket had two tiers, we would be in the second tier. However, Bangladesh are better than us in Limited Overs in Asian conditions.

The arrogance of our fans and their level of entitlement does not match the below average talent and the rotten mentality of our cricket team. I think it is time for our fans to accept that this is 2019 and Pakistan is no longer a big team.

The writing is on the wall already - these charity tours to Australia have now been reduced to 2 Tests now. In a few years, we might not even have the privilege to play Test cricket in Australia, with the likes of India, England, South Africa and New Zealand all getting 5 match Test series.

For me Pakistan cricket died in the 2000s. The signs of our terminal decline were their in the 90’s but we didn’t act quickly. Nevertheless, we had a good run from the 50s to the 90s and should be proud of our history and heritage.

In about 2 years, with Misbah at helm, I expect Pakistan to be ranked: 7 in t20s, 6 in ODIs and 4 in Tests.

T20I and ODI teams are young and will improve.

Test team is in freefall and will get worse if Misbah persists with the poor old players. Need to try more youngsters.

Agreed with Mamoon.

Should Pakistan lose all their matches on this Aussie tour and I expect they will I expect future Australian tours to be a one-off test matches and a couple of T20's/ODI.

We are a second tier team, in the same league as New Zealand and South Africa. The question is whether or not we can bounce back up? Bowling attack for the future looks promising, but our batting reserves are completely empty as of now.

For now, we are -
#5 in T20
#5 in ODI
#6 in Tests

Don't see Pakistani team winning too many T20Is with this team in the next 1 year. The top teams will start taking this miniature version a bit seriously keeping an eye on the upcoming WC.

I think it is quite generous to say we are in same league as south africa and new zealand in t20 format atm.

LOL.......New Zealand and South Africa would disagree! SA is going through a transition currently but their domestic structure will produce quality cricketers.

Kane Williamson alone can outbat the current line-up, and their fitness and fielding standards is something the current set up will never match.

Nowhere even close to New Zealand.

Won't be anywhere near top 5 in the short formats with clueless Misbah in charge. With Micky at the helm a Champions trophey win, good T20 results and just missing top 4 in the WC were pretty good results which kept Pakistan at least around the top the 5 short-form teams. With Misbah this will drop to 8-10 easy. Tests TBD for the moment, I can't see Misbah been able to produce better results outside of Asia but maybe home record improves, 5th at best.

That's a very honest analysis.I completely agree with you on there.

New Zealand is an side which depends on one batsman williamson, similarly we also depend on babar azam.

I also don't expect india winning the t2o world cup with hacks like rahul and pant but you will surely reach the semis because of your bowling.

Can you explain me more about this, how this happened?

We reached the number 1 ranking because the fourth Test between India and West Indies was a washout. That is why India took back the Mace in the very next series, while we lost a Test to West Indies in Sharjah.

We were never the best team. We just got lucky.

It is unfair to put New Zealand in the same tier as Pakistan, Sri Lanka, West Indies etc. They don’t have glorious highs like India, England and Australia but they sink to the depths of mediocrity like Pakistan either. They are probably between the first and the second tier.

South Africa are struggling at the moment but they have to struggle for a good decade to be in the second tier. The chances are high that they will recover quickly. They are a big side.

Though I am not sure but India was N0-1 team at that time and there was a series going on between India and Windies and one of the match washed due to rain and due to that India had to lose a couple of points
that's how Pakistan managed to ladder up to no-1 ranking for a week

Definitely don't put NZ in the same tier as West Indies and Sri Lanka. I'd say world cricket looks something like this right now:

1st Tier
1.) England
2.) India
3.) Australia

2nd Tier
4.) New Zealand
5.) South Africa
6.) Pakistan

3rd Tier
7.) West Indies
8.) Bangladesh
9.) Sri Lanka
10.) Afghanistan
11.) Ireland

Pakistan at the bottom of 2nd Tier on a downward curve, while South Africa and NZ I would expect to recover.

New Zealand almost completely rely on Williamson the same way we do with Babar, except Babar is the superior T20 batsman.

South Africa are in a transitional phase at the moment, and a series with Pakistan or New Zealand would be competitive.

I do agree though that Pakistan are currently on a downward tragectory, while New Zealand and South Africa are not. However at this moment in time, they are all in the same tier.

Yes, I am not counting on India to win t20 WC either. We should reach SF by default, then will find a way to screw it up as usual. In fact I stopped giving a duck way back. Our win loss ratio will be 70-30 in the next 1 year though in T20s.

Sticking to the topic, I feel Pakistan have even tougher days ahead in all 3 formats against quality oppositions. I hope I will be proved wrong though. Cricket needs a stronger Pakistani team to break the monotony.
