One thing is almost sure, he wont be dropped
So where should he bat.
I think no.6 is best for him.
He was brilliant at 6 until he batted above.

Vote in the poll and discuss

Usman deserves a chance now. It's time for Shafiq to go.

3 is best for him - gives him time to settle in

3. Enough is enough. Either score some runs upfront and take the pressure or time to go. He isn't someone who can reliably score big down the order, so let others do it.

1. Imam
2. Azhar
3. Asad
4. Haris
5. Usman
6. Babar
7. Sarfraz

This should be our batting order. I'd replace Babar for Saad too, but lack of practice games, already debuting usman and Babar just got a decent score, perhaps best to stick with Babar.

#3 is too high for a player of his caliber, #6 is too low for a senior batsman like him. #4, #5 looks perfect positions for him right now given he was the only top order batsman to score a fifty in first innings also. Our batting order against England should be:

1. Imam
2. Azhar
3. Haris
4. Babar
5. Shafiq
6. Fakhar
7. Sarfi
8. Shadab

He was settled at no.6 position. It will take time to adjust him at no.4. His career was revolving around Misbah and Younis with him at the crease. Now both have gone. He should have stepup and have to play middle order around him. He has to anchor rather than playing with anchors likewise misbah, younis. I think 4,5 is his ideal no. He has scored good 64 to build pakistan innings vs Ireland just two days ago and here many people are talking about his exclusion from the team. Thats ridiculous!!

That's ridiculous bro. But this is PP. welcome :)

his actual position as per him is top order either 3 or 4. but for pakistan test team he is most suited at number 6 as he has a record batting at this position, so i would suggest he should stick with the same

depends on Azhar; if Azhar remains an opener then #4 is good for Asad; but if Azhar is back to #3 then #5 is good for Asad

Give him a chance in the lower middle order. I think he’ll perform when the ball is not moving a great deal and the batsman at the other end scores quickly, rotating the strike. Sarfraz, Faheem and Shadab are the ideal partners for him at the crease I feel.

Asad Shafiq should bat in the nets for the series and give a chance to Usman or Saad but as I know that won't happen I think he should bat at #4

No.6 is where he has had most of his success and if that is where he is getting at his best then it is best for Pakistan to keep him at that position as moving him up has not worked.

Simple.

Look I understand the criticism Shafiq gets - he's far too inconsistent a player to build your batting around but he did score an important 62 against Ireland after those early wickets we lost in the 1st innings.

He also struck 186 vs Northamptonshire so there's no point dropping him now and throwing the batting lineup into even more flux.

Keep him at 4.

If he bats at #5 then we need to move azhar on one down position to have some experience in middle otherwise #4 looks ok if he scored on that position.

Simple.

You can't simply throw a junior at the deep end just because a guy whos been playing for nearly a decade now doesn't have it in him to bat higher up the order. We need Asad to step up and take the #4 batting position otherwise, this entire 8 year investment will stand to be a failure.

He shouldn't be in the playing 11.

The guy is going onto 33 and he still has to bat at no. 6?

No. 6 is generally reserved for newcomers to help ease them into Test cricket or A/R's, so that teams have an extra bowling option and help keep the main bowlers fresh.

In fact, an average around 40 is below par, considering he has played primarily in the UAE and you just to have look at Azhar, who bats as an opener or one down, but is still managing an average in the high 40's and that tells you everything.

In conclusion, perform up the order or pack your bags and let others have their opportunity.

He is always one innings away from a match winning one! We dont have good Test batters sitting around so he must stay,

Asad Shafiq is garbage

the end

he should finally man up and play at 4
he was protected under misbah and left at 6
and now some of you want to protect this so called top order batsman even now?

Azhar 1/3
Shafiq 4

no other position for Shafiq
he should be discarded for being so weak

the ideal position should be 3 but he'd probably cry at the thought of that

Simple.

Couldn't be more wrong. The only experienced batters that come in at 6 are those that can bat at a SR of 60+ and take risks. Shafiq is probably the worst player to play this role.

Also number 6 is used for inexperienced players to be sheltered by top order experience and class so that they can learn from them not vice versa as suggested here. When the time comes (usually 30-40 tests but less in some cases), his should position should be somwhere in the top 5.

He won't be dropped because of the lack of experience in the squad :misbah3 but it should be his last chance.

Not to be intended to be directed at a particular person,

Who cares if he averages 40 at number 6? Our problem is our top order. We need someone solid to set up the top order. If Shafiq can’t score 20 runs at 4/5, then simply he isn’t good enough to be in the squad.

If Fakhar Zaman was given the chance at number 6. He would be averaging 50 an innings at 120 SR. Just way better than Shafiq.

Fakhar Zaman is a true dynamic marquee player who is talented and delivers blockbuster performances similar to the likes of Faheem Ashraf and Shadab Khan. Shafiq is a dull tuck tuck player who plays like a bunny 80% of the time.

Him and Sami shouldn't be nowhere in the squad. But if management wants him to play his ideal position will be after Hasan Ali.

Yeah, if given the chance he would also end all corruption, war and famine.

It doesn't matter where he bats and he can't complain if he gets shuffled around, he is one of our senior batsman, he needs to step up!

He's scored a 100 and a 50 in his last 2 test matches and 186 in the practice match against Northamptonshire.

And people still think he'll be dropped lol.

6.

Azhar and shafiq should bat down the order where they can score big hundreds instead of being sacrificial lambs against the new ball.

Imam
Haris
Fakhar
Sarfraz
Azhar
Asad
Babar / usman
Shadab / faheem
Hasan
Amir
Abbas

Looks like number 4 position for him as indicated by Mickey Arthur in latest Sky interview.
