There are the perennial giants of Asia like Japan, S Korea, Iran and Saudi but they haven't made it out the second round in recent world cups, which of these teams might go the furthest?

There's also the reigning Asian champs, Qatar. Do you guys think they have a chance to make the semis? They outplayed every team in the Asian cup and have home advantage, they're also the only Asian team to play in the Copa America and Gold cup.

There's also Syria, the underdogs. They might qualify this time around and I wouldn't be surprised if they do better than the east Asian teams.

Japan almost defeated Belgium in the R16 in the last WC. Qatar might make it far if its anything like 2002 WC and South Korea is a good team. No hopes from Saudi or Iranians.

Qatar will do well at home. Remember they are the current Asian champions.

The rest need to qualify.

Latin American teams are leagues ahead of any Asian team

No. Panama finished dead last in their group in last WC and lost embarrassingly to England, Belgium and Tunisia. Australia defeated Honduras to qualify for the WC so that's not true at all.

I'm not counting Australia as an Asian country.

Japan has the players while Iran has the most European style of organized play. Either or both should make atleast round of 16. It'll depend on the draw
