Batsmen who averaged under 50 in test matches but were the best in the world at one point of time
1.Victor Trumper-early 1900's
2.Rohan Kanhai1960-65
3.Ian Chappell 1970-75
4.Dilip Vengsarkar 1986-88
5.Gordon Greenidge1984-86
6.Graham Gooch 1990-92
These are my choice of batsmen who although averaged less than 50 were at one point of time morally the best batsmen in the world.Victor Trumper was simply the genius of geniuses and perhaps in any other era may have been the best of batsmen.on bad wickets he had no equal .Kanhai in early or mid 1960's often emulated Sobers or morally surpassed him considering he batted one down.Rohan averaged over 53 at one down.Before advent of Viv Richards in the mid 1970's in proper test cricket excluding Barry Richards Ian Chappell was the most prized opponent of bowlers ,averaging over 50 at one down.From 1986-88 Vengsarkar statistically even overshadowed the best of Gavaskar averaging around 90 including tons against the West Indies and in England.To me in the mid 1980's Greenidge was the best batsmen which was illustrated by his 2 double hundreds in England in 1984.From 1990 Gooch emerged supreme dominating an Indian attack at home with Bradmanesque contempt and successfully tackling an all conquering Calypso pace attack at home in 1991 as well as the lethal Pakistan duo of Wasim and Waqar in 1992.
Stars like Aravinda De 'Silva,Mark Waugh,Zaheer Abbas,David Gower ,Clive Lloyd,Inzamam Ul Haq and Mohinder Amarnath who all averaged under 50 in test cricket missed out by just a fraction.
