Is Champions league bigger than a FIFA World Cup?
Similarly
Barcelona/Real Madrid > Spain National Team?

Liverpool > England National Team?

By "first" of what? What's the criteria? Bigger in the sense of?

Not sure what the point of this thread is.

Players make their money by playing with their clubs. Playing for the national team is a matter of pride for players. However, most players retire from internationals earlier so they can possibly elongate their club careers.

With regards to following the football world cup is still probably one of the biggest sporting tournaments in the world. However, there are die hard fans who would rather watch their club play as opposed to sending their player off to a qualification tournament or a meaningless international friendly.

In the end its a matter of perspective but in general for most players and fans alike their club takes precedence over the national team (not to say that players don't want to play for their national team but if it was a matter of selecting one or the other most players would opt for the club as that is their livelihood)

England World Cup hero and Leeds United legend Jack Charlton has died.

The 85-year-old passed away peacefully at his Northumberland home on Friday, his family said.

He had been suffering from a long-term illness.

Charlton, the older brother of Bobby Charlton, was part of England's World Cup-winning team in 1966.

He was a one-club man for Leeds United, making a record 773 appearances over a 23-year career as a player.

Widely hailed as one of the all-time great central defenders in the game, Leeds United said they were "deeply saddened" by the news.

His family said in a statement: "Jack died peacefully on Friday 10 July at the age of 85. He was at home in Northumberland, with his family by his side."

In Football :

World Cup > Leagues > International Bilaterals/Friendlies

In Cricket :

World Cups > Bilaterals > Domestic Competitions > Circus Leagues

No matter how hard some cricket league fans try, cricket leagues can never overtake International Cricket. :inti

It’s subjective imo. Depends on which country you play for. A Pakistani lad will 100% be much more excited to play for a good European club than to represent Pakistan on the international stage considering that Pakistan barely get any international action at all.
For example, a Dutch player like Van Dijk might be more excited to play for Netherlands in the World Cup than to play for Liverpool. On the other hand, players like Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah might be more excited to play for Liverpool than to play for their national teams(Senegal and Egypt who only have a good chance of winning the CAF).
