Amla is underrated in tests. Yes he was a poor leader but the guy has runs and effective runs everywhere as far as tests are concerned.

Apart from those series defining performances in Australia, England and India between 2010-2012, he has scored hundreds in his earlier tour to India and England also.

Yes his record is not that fantastic in Australia because he failed in every tour to Aus barring the one which itself was a great series in 2012, but then even a Dravid has only one great series in Australia.

I think if Amla gets to 10k runs, we should start putting him at same tier to Dravid or Border or Kallis or Miandad.

He was solid if unspectacular in the 2008 tour of Australia as well. Got four half-centuries, IIRC.

Actually Lara failed in India. I dont know why given he is regarded as one of the greatest ever vs spin and surely facing Srinath and co won't have been an issue.

"Greatest ever", not invincible. Scoring against India in India is very tough for non-Asian players. No surprise that many great batsmen have been unable to do well there.

Yeah, one was a 47. He did average 50+ however and scored the second-most runs for a South African. It wasn't his best series of Australia, of course, but it wasn't a poor one either.

Similarly, his 2008 tour of India gets overshadowed by his 2010 tour even though he averaged 60+ in that series.

I never claimed that Amla would make an all-time XI as a certainty. If it is a true all-time XI, even Ponting and Dravid has zero chances of getting in there because of The Don. However, like Smith, he only has two or three contenders for the spot in a post-1970s XI and stacks up well against them, therefore deserving a mention.

They have more of a chance than Amla, that's my point.

Even someone like Ponting should not be an automatic pick if the series is played on India. Tendulkar and Amla are the only batsmen who have scored runs in all the countries.

Decent series I would say..40s and 50s dont win you match except a few cases where it might save the match. Smith, AB and JP clearly played more important knocks than any of Amla.Kallis was pretty average too.

I haven't seen as much talks for Lara's failure in India as it is for Ponting. And Lara has destroyed Murali in Lanka.

Too many batsmen and not enough bowlers. Essentially the game has been changed so much in the batsman's favour since the early 00's that stats are hardly comparable anymore.
