Pakistan fans may be disheartened by Pakistan's recent performance but must take pride that it has a great legacy and historically it has claims to have the finest all-time world cup XI ever.In the first second and fourth editions it had the strongest batting line up and arguably the most talented side. With more luck It may well have won even 3 more world cups.Similarly had fortune favoured them South Africa may well have triumphed in the 1992,1996 and 1999 and 2011world cups .Without hesitation my mind they were the best side in 1996 and 1999 if you asess their players.West Indies defined a new era in cricket when establishing their stamp and supremacy from 1975 with the greatest pace bowlers and match-winning batsmen.Australia went on to surpass the level of West Indies dominance after 1999 building an even stronger empire with a much longer reign.Australia also had more and harder opponents that the Calypsos with the evolution of One day Cricket.

In my final countdown this was my ranking.

MY RANKINGS OF ALL-TIME WORLD CUP TEAMS IN ORDER OF MERIT

1.Pakistan-No pace attack had more variety blending pace with accuracy and movement. No team had as astute a leader as Imran Khan.Few batsmen were better in a crisis than Miandad or as reliable as Inzamam and very few more talented than Majid Khan,Saed Anwar and Zaheer Abbas. It also had great all-rounders in Imran Khan,Wasim Akram and Abdur Razzak or Asif Iqbal..The bowling attack blended the wizardry of Wasim ,the agression of Imran , the devastating speed of Shoaib Akhtar and the unreadable turn of Abdul Qadir or Mushtaq Ahmed.Unlike cricinfo I would choose Qadir instead of Mushtaq and Inzamam instead of Misbah.

2.South Africa-No team had such a plethora of allrounders like Jacques Kallis.Lance Kluesner and Shaun Pollock etc and such depth in batting with the likes of Pollock coming in at no 9.The best fielding side ever with stalwarts like Jonty Rhodes. Also had the equivalent of a Viv Richards of his day in A B Devilliers and a modern day great in Hashim Amla.Great genuinely fast men like Alan Donald and Dale Steyn.Team lacked a great spinner and enough match-winners with the bat.

3.Australia-No team could be more well balanced with bowers like Mcgrath and Warne and batsmen like Ponting,Waugh brothers and Gilchrist. The control of Mcgrath, the develish turn of Warne, the tenacity of Steve Waugh ,the artistry of Mark Waugh, the blitzkreig of Gilchrist and the run making capacity of Ponting would make this close to an invincible team.A match-winning all-round cricketer in Michael Bevan but not as strong all-rounders like in Pakistan and South Africa.

4.West Indies-The greatest pace battery ever with the best match-winning batsmen.Imagine having the greats O.D.I.Batsmen ever in Viv Richards accompanied by greats like Lara,Clive Lloyd,Gordon Greenidge etc.Perhaps lacked a great spinner but a Larry Gomes may have compensated. Also did not have a great allrounder.tHe pace attack of Roberts,Holding and Garner could be unplayable at times.

In the end it was neck to neck between Pakistan,South Africa ,West Indies and Australia with maybe not even a whisker separating the 4 teams..Possible that even margin of 1 wicket would not separate the teams and the playing conditions would play a major factor. The ranking is tentative as it has only considered pure talent and not how players have binded together. For pure temperament or statistical performances Australia was well on top followed by West Indies but for man -to man-talent I feel Pakistan and South Africa edged it.The leadership of Imran influenced my ranking in addition to the genius of Wasim,Majid and Zaheer.South Africa was ranked ahead because it had many more genuine all-rounders,quicker speedsters and better fielding .I feel as the game evolved the CalYpso pace battery woud not be as effective with the side lacking a great spinner.

Pakistan for sure. They have legends distributed across generations. Australia is a close second.

how can anyone not say Australia?

Hayden, Gilchrist, McGrath, Warne, Ponting all of them are legends

then you have players like Brett Lee, Symonds, Bevan who were greats in the ODI format.

Australia easily no one comes close.
WI second

Pakistan batting is too weak to be ranked top 1.. Bowling is good though.

Pakistan batting is similar to Indian bowling.

SA will be 3rd theoretically on paper

Pakistan worse than South Africa with its match-winning talent and leadership?Better attack and more talented batsmen?

What about Pakistan? Not there?

Pakistan’s batting would still be weak.

Other than Saeed Anwar and Miandad their batting in the top 6 looks weak.

From the top of my head the XIs would be

Pakistan
Saeed Anwar
Ameer sohail
R raja
Miandad
S Malik/Z Abbas
Imran Khan
Moin khan
Wasim
Afridi/saqlain
Mushtaq Ahmed
Akhtar

The batting is deep, but their top order is iffy. A good variety in bowling though.

Aus
Gilly
M Waugh/Haydos
Ponting
Clarke
S Waugh
Symonds
Bevan
Warne
Lee
McDermott/Fleming
McGrath

All based covered. At least ODI greats in all XI positions.

India
Sachin
Sehwag
Dravid
Amarnath
Y Singh
Dhoni
Kapil DEV
Kumble
Z Khan
Srinath
Nehra

WI
Haynes
Greenidge
Viv Richards
Lara
Lloyd
Andre Russell/Chanderpaul
Jeff Dujon
Roberts
Ambrose
Holding
Walsh

Can’t think of any spinners for WI. Possibly hooper!

Aus
WI

By far

Then Ind/Pak (ATG in one discipline, weaker in other)

RSA
Eng

SL/NZ

BD

Zimabwe

In time, BD will move well clear of SL/NZ.

Australia and I feel it's not even up for debate

They won 5 world cups. How many did all other teams combined win? Six.

Is the OP trying to curry favor with PP?

LMAO

Australia 5 WCs
Pakistan 1 WC
SA 0 WC

Pakistan and SA best 2 WC squads.

Worst thread of the year.

Australia by a country mile and then after that it has to be Pakistan. Beyond those two, the World Cup XIs do not feel as emphatic or legendary, not even the windies.

Pakistan has a pretty weak batting. Other than Miandad and Anwar, no one else has a great WC record in the top 5 (assuming IK bats at 6, and Moin at 7).

I would go far enough to say that India has a stronger squad, albeit slightly. The batting is one of the strongest, and the bowling, though not ATG is still very decent. Kapil, Srinath, Zak & Kumble are a pretty respectable bowling side. Pakistan’s bowling is far stronger, of course. But their batting would contain Aamer, Rammez Raja and Saleem Malik. These 3 are greater weak links than the Indian bowling.

Australia and it's not even close.

West Indies next.

India.

South Africa.

Pakistan.

Sorry fans but it's just the reality. A WC win doesn't mean you're better than an all-time team of the other teams.

Australia. The team with the likes of Ponting and Warne was easily the best. Didn't see the early West Indies team of the 1970's who won it a few times as well.

Ridiculous thread. Australia is head and shoulders above every other team, not even close. They have several ODI ATGs in their squad (Gilchrist, Ponting, McGrath, Bevan, Lee), several ODI greats (Warne, Mark Waugh, Starc, Hayden, Symonds, Hussey)...

I am sure I missed some others as well.

It's Australia.

West Indies being distant second. Pakistan doesn't have enough batters. India doesn't have bowlers.

South Africa doesn't have enough.... well anything really.

Australia clearly by a country mile. 5 World Cup is no joke but then again 1999 final was gifted :wasim

Pakistan - how can you screw up 1999 final

1.Australia-Atg players in all departments.

Gilchrist
Watson
Ponting
Dean jones
Symonds
Hussey
Bevan
Starc
Lee
Warne

Australia. Too strong and this goes undebatable.

Won the WC in every single continent where they have played.
