So as the Pakistan New Zealand test series approaches, I was looking at previous tours of Pakistan to New Zealand. Overall Pakistan have won seven series in New Zealand in the following years.
1) 1973
2) 1979
3) 1993
4) 1994
5) 1995
6) 2003
7) 2011

Which among these seven is Pakistan's greatest series win in New Zealand? Kindly discuss.

2003.

Still I would say that none of the wins from 1990s onwards meant that much since New Zealand were a minnow level test side till McCullum took over.

Man, I sure miss the days when New Zealand used to be our favorite whipping boys.

NZ have been a brilliant team since 2013 and were a strong team in 1980s decade. Aside of that, they were basically minnow level or slightly above that.

In terms of pure drama then Hamilton 1993. To defend 126 in the 4th innings is unheard of and is the perfect distillation of the magical 2Ws era.

I've a soft spot for 2011 though as that series began the rehabilitation of our Test side under Misbah. We hadn't won a Test series for 5 years or a series outside Asia for 7 years. And it's the last time we've won a series in SENA.

What about 1979 series win? That came against peak Hadlee. Pakistan only team to win a series in NZ from 1976-1991.

2003 was a good win, NZ was ranked 3rd back then. And the way Pakistan won the 2nd test was a stuff of the legends after conceding a lead of 170 in the 1st innings and chasing 275 to win with only a loss of 3 wickets.

Then why India has only won 1 test in NZL in the last 40 odd years ?

92 Hamilton test was unreal but my personal favouite is 2003 series it was argubally Akthat best performce across 2 innings of a test

India have a total of 2 away test series win and alongside that we drew a couple of away series, one in 1975 and other in 1993.

Our best team has unluckily coincided with the best NZ team ever and that's why we have struggled to beat them away. When our best team got to smash a weak NZ team, we did it 1-0 without quality pacers in 2008.

I can't say much about that, Crowe was clearly missing but I think the ones in 80s, around 2003 under Fleming and between 2013-20, have been NZ's best teams.

Still doesn't change the fact that India has won a grand total of 1 test match in the last 45 years in NZL. India wasn't even able to beat NZL even in their weak phase in the 90's. The drew one match in 1994 and lost the series in 1998.

You are wrong. We won 3-1 in NZ in 1968 and drew 1-1 in 1975-76 tour. We also drew series in 1993. We won in 2008 in NZ when we were strong team.

On topic has any other team won more series in New Zealand than Pakistan ?

List of series wins for visiting teams in NZ.

1) England ( 10 series wins)

2) Pakistan ( 7 series wins)

3) South Africa ( 6 series wins)

4) Australia ( 6 series wins)

5) West Indies (4 series wins)

6) India ( 2 series wins)

7) Sri Lanka ( 1 series win)

Where am I wrong? Since 1975-76 India has only won 1 test match in NZL. Their only since that win came in 2009. So India has won a grand total of 1 test match in NZL in 45 years and counting.

Okay, so only England have won more series in New Zealand than Pakistan. Still a great record for Pak.

NZ's unbeaten run at home started after 1979 series loss to Pakistan. They didn't lose a series at home from 1980-1991/92. Overall that 1979 kiwi team was quite strong. They beat the GOAT WI team in their next series at home in 1980.

Hamilton 93 is the classic 2 W's demolition. They were on a high after the English summer in 92. Even though the target was only 127, I always thought that Pakistan would win looking at the form the 2 W's were in.

Tbh I never viewed rankings during the 2000s era as particularly meaningful since it was Australia...daylight...and some team, who, through some semblance of consistency and not running into Australia would get to 2.

But yeah that was a good win. Shoaib was on absolute fire in both innings.

I don't think India won anywhere in the 90s expect maybe Sri Lanka, though I may be wrong.

How do Australia have such few series wins? I can't remember them ever losing in New Zealand.

Has to be hamilton 1993, regardless of anytime in cricketing history to defend 124 is something special and around that time the 2 Ws were by far best fast bowling pair in world cricket.

Thats terrible.
India really are horrible travellers.

Ontopic: That Akhtar spell from 2003 is memorable.

With such a great record, it means that these players should be able to get advice from senior players and coaching staff about the conditions and how to bowl.

Look forward to the test series.

Should have known it happened during the Hadlee era. I think New Zealand managed to draw a series in Australia aswell during that period.

Sir Richard Hadlee actually also helped NZ to beat Australia in Australia in 1985/86. Thats why I rate Pakistan's series win in NZ in 1979, which came against peak Hadlee, the best series win of all.

Here is the link for that series in Australia in 1985/86 which NZ won.

Yeah, they have won only 1 test match in NZL in 44 years and counting. They have done well in Australia though.

Credit where it is due, that is a tremendous record to have in a SENA country.

hands down 1979

I think its between 1979 and 2003. 1979 was a strong NZL team with Richard Hadlee playing but so was the 2003 one. In 2002 NZL whitewashed India 2-0 and then drew away with India 0-0 in 2003. So that was a pretty strong NZL team too with Stephen Fleming leading from the front.

hands down 1979

This. The Kiwi team in that 1979 series was pretty much the same kiwi team which went unbeaten at home throughout the 80's and won a series in Australia and England each. That side's bowling attack was quite strong with Sir Richard Hadlee and Lance Cairns leading the pack. Only notable miss from that team was Martin Crowe but he had not made his debut back then. In any case Pakistan is the only team to win a test series in NZ from 1977-1991. So 1979 series win was a special one.

Insane. Didn’t know Pakistan has such a great track record in NZ.

I'll take the 1979 one - I believe Javed played a wonderful innings there and it was one of the best ever Kiwi attack, under Mike Burgess and with their two Umpires - a team that beat Lloy'd WIN few months later.

Next one will be 2011 - last PAK series win in a SENA Country and I am not sure when next one is coming.

Yeah, Javed Miandad scored 81 and 160 not out in Christchurch in the match which Pakistan won. Javed had a great record in NZ, thats why Sir Richard Hadlee rated him the best Asian batsman.

And yes 1979 series win has to the best because it came against a Kiwi team that few months later beat Clive Lloyd's GOAT WI team and went unbeaten at home from 1980-1991. Pakistan is the only team to win a series in NZ from 1977-1991.

Yea great record. County experience helps for sure in n.z.

Winning so many series in n.z is very impressive.
