Which one was the most against the tide: Pakistan beating India in ICC CT 2017 or Australia beating India in ICC WC 2023?

My vote goes to this Aus WC win. Winning against a dominant India that too at their home with loads of support and being 47/3 at one stage. Australia have done amazingly well.

Truthfully, neither are against the tide. We are all aware that you put a bit of pressure on this generation of Indian cricket players in a KO round and they fold like a house of cards. Both Fakhar Zaman’s 2017 innings and Travis Head’s innings tonight are far superior to anything that “King” Kohli has ever managed in the knockout stage of an ODI WC. Group stage bullies the whole lot of them.

It wasn’t Travis head innings but the batting which choked.
India were 100 runs short. And the bowling just couldn’t do anything after the ball became 10 overs old.

Pakistan.

They struggle to beat India in any game, especially tournament cricket. They'd got beat by India in the group match. India were also a top top team in 2017 aswell with great players.

I didn't think Australia would win today but I'd have given Australia more chance today than I gave (and always give) Pak when facing India. I always expect a Pak loss v India.

The batting choked, even a 50-60 more would have been a fighting total. Then rohit did a blunder by not giving siraj the new ball when it was swinging. Shami could have done better with the old ball in middle overs.

Pakistan .
The lose against Australia is not bad as it was against arch rival.
The feeling, emotions is totally different when it comes to Pakistan loss

Easily Pakistan.

Azhar Ali, Hafeez, Babar Azam, Imad Wasim, Hasan Ali and Junaid Khan all played good supporting roles however, had neither Fakhar Zaman nor Amir clicked, Pakistan would've lost because they were so heavily dependent on these two to win that final.

None actually

Any decent team can beat India in a final/knockout match as India is very very weak mentally

No COINCIDENCE that they haven't won a SINGLE Icc event in 10 years

India would have won both matches had Kohli played like he plays in bilaterals or group matches of World Cups
But sadly, he never performs in important matches.
2015 WC semi, 2017 CT final, 2019 WC semi are just some examples

Neither. SL beating India in 2014 followed by NZ beating India in semis was a bigger shock., followed by PAK in 2017

This one (AUS) actually isn't against tide - they are genuinely very good team always and this time closest to India in India than any other team. When it comes to KO games - they are way, way ahead mentally giving them the edge. If these two teams play a 7 game ODI series in India right now, probably result will be 4-3..... don't know which way. Even in this WC first game, had Mitch not dropped Kohli, Aussies probably would have defended <200, at least would have made it real tight.

WC comes with several games, means teams get the chance to acclimatize to the condition over the course of 4/5 weeks, for that better teams finish strongly, weaker teams gradually fade away. Aussies paced up their tournament nicely - initially their batting, bowling looked toothless, but gradually first batsmen adjusted, then the spinners and finally from SF onwards, their pacers looked completely different and in Final they gave the best fielding display of the tournament.

I wasn't against tide, rather the better team won on the day.

I don't fully agree with you. Before this game or the CT final, if you had asked most cricket pundits they would have chosen India as favorites. India looked unstoppable in both tournaments. And they had beaten Pak/Aus in the respective tournaments. Yes the better teams won but India were overwhelmingly favourites in both matches.

Indian sports anchors, ex players are in denial ie this was a poor pitch for a WC final, India lost a crucial toss blah blah

I think this post is kind of inviting criticism but this is a genuine question I have - not an attempt at trolling.

We all know Pakistan had a sad and tragic exit at the WC this year. Many of us have been quite disappointed and dismayed with cricket since then.

However, with India’s humiliating defeat at home where they were completely outclassed and outplayed, I have to admit that I personally feel better. Probably a bit sadistic but this is how sporting rivalries work, I guess. I remember how happy Australians I know were when England got kicked out of the WC.

As the saying goes, Na jeet mei na pyaar mei, hai wo maza jo Hindustan ki haar mei!

As an observer and the threads opened since yesterday ofcourse it does lol

Also it makes the game spicy, all the hypocritical KO posts ATG goat etc etc.. if one sees it as a third person it creates a lot of entertainment.

Facts bro. Had a great day at work! I did feel sorry for Kohli but overall, I couldn’t feel better. Second best feeling to Pakistan winning the CT.

I think it’s also because India were looking so invincible leading up to this final that I was convinced they were like the Australian side of the 2000s. But of course, that theory has now been thrown out of the window.

Why does it make you feel better ?
Sporting rivalries tend to be like that. For instance, when I used to still watch football and be a Madrid supporter, FCB losing used to make me feel better.

Having said that, I am also probably relieved that India is not as great as they had led us to believe in the earlier stages of this WC. Still some massive gaps in the team.

This one, Indian unbeaten whole World Cup, comfortably beat every team, and then lost in a one sided final.
