Throughout history, we have rarely been blessed with players that are strong leaders and have great cricketing intelligence. But Hafeez is one player who I felt bad a lot of captaincy potential. He was intelligent with his field placements and bowling plans.

Under his captaincy, he also performed well and took responsibility on the field. He was well spoken with the junior team members and provided good guidance to seniors as well.

Who do you think were Pakistani players with good captaincy potential?

I never cared for Hafeez's captaincy. There was nothing there that demonstrated that the guy was some kind of master tactician or a great leader of men.

I think Miandad had a lot of potential as captain, until the senior players conspired against him because it was too much of a dent to their egos. Mushtaq Mohammad for me was a natural leader who was not only great on the field, but was also great at motivating players or talking to them one-on-one. He often used to have a beer with certain players post-match, who were struggling and just talk things out. His captaincy tenure also ended prematurely and far too early.

Other than that not many come to mind. There are very few Pakistan captains that can be categorized as great. Since Imran atleast most have been remarkably poor who, in my opinion, have used the role of captain more for their own selfish reasons than the benefit of the team.

I'm sure Salman Butt was one, but we all know what happened.

Mushtaq is the Ganguly of Pakistan cricket. Totally reformed our way of playing.

We have always produced the most unintelligent cricketers with no match-awareness, especially in the last 30 odd years, so this is a very hard question to answer.

For all my criticism about Hafeez’s ability with the bat and technical deficiencies , he was always a sharp and thinking cricketer. He understands the game well and is mature, always positive thinking (not many could be positive after experiencing the kind of woeful failures he has as a batsman, but he’s stayed positive) and resilient.

These attributes and mindset could have made him a good captain - but these are similar qualities that Rameez Raja also had during his playing days.

Unfortunately neither Rameez or Hafeez were ever able to match these captaincy and cricketing iQ credentials with performances as players to show they were worthy of a place in the team.

Shoaib Malik is the only correct answer.

He was the one that we were waiting for but we as fans didnt appreciate and give him enough time.

I dont want to go overboard but this is the best analogy that I can think of:

Pakistan fans should bemoan the missed opportunity with Shoaib Malik the same way Jews should bemoan the missed opportunity with Jesus (PBUH)

Both were the saviours in their own respected ways and both were shunned.

All Pakistani players who could have had captaincy potential did get captaincy. I can't think of any exception. Captaincy has been easily passed around in the last 3 decades or so.

Which makes me happy that it is becoming somewhat more stable again.

Of the current lot, no one. Maybe Fakhar if his game were stable enough for him to be permanent part of team.

Salman Butt , He is intelligent , educated and his understanding about game In unbelievably good , unfortunately he himself destroyed his career ,

Fakhar was given chance in the PSL. Absolutely clueless from what I can remember

From the last decade or so Salman Butt, Shoaib Malik and Mohammad Hafeez.

Butt would have been a long term captain if it wasnt for the wrong doing.

Malik and Hafeez, both were discarded too early as captains of white ball setups. Malik have had a lot of domestic white ball success as well but, not sure his role in possibly cricket politics and role that could have played.

From earlier, Javed Miandad had a great cricket acumen.

Malik failed to win over the senior players but he would have been a good captain long term.

I see Hafeez name mentioned but hes always struck me as a good number 2. His batting suffered a lot ( until recently) from paralysis by over analysis and his captaincy was the same.

Win over? You think when other cricket boards appoint a captain they expect him to win over seniors? Nonsense

The seniors should have accepted him as the deserving captain. His achievements as the captain of Sialkot was not a joke.

Why did Moyo think he deserved captaincy? We saw his captaincy in that series against Australia. So awful.

Yk was carried to a T20 champions trophy win by his teammates. One of the worse LOI batsmen I have ever seen.

Afridi- a habitual troublemaker

Malik was absolutely right if he wanted to get rid of such seniors and make his own team. As a captain, he has a automatic right to do this.

These players and their fans were a thorn in Pakistan for such a long time. I'm glad that they are gone.

I completely agree with you. Win over was perhaps the wrong phrase to use.

Shoib Malik is an average player , not a captain material , he cannot perform at SENA conditions though good at sub continent , overall average player.

Such average players don’t get respect in team and cannot be accepted at least in Pakistan team .

Not captain material? Hahahaha

Led an average Sialkot team to countless domestic triumphs

I think you dont understand cricket yaar.

There is big difference between domestic and International matches specially in Pakistan team , managing big players would have not easy for him , average player cannot lead Pakistan team historically it’s proven

Except Malik was a key LOI player at that time unless we are re-writing history now

Salman Butt.

I thought he was going to be a very good captain before the spot fixing.

Check his SENA record , you will understand what level of player he is , and in England he is less than below average.
