This is my list of pairs of opening batsmen ranked in order of merit who when rolled into one made the perfect opening batsmen?I have made 2 lists. One for those belonging only to same era while the other including pairs of different eras.My main criteria is combining technical correctness and solidity with attacking as well as innovative ability. Thus blending technical mastery with creative genius.

Best pairs of same eras ranked in order of merit when rolled into one

1.Len Hutton-Arthur Morris
2.Barry Richards-Sunil Gavaskar
3.Gordon Greenidge-Sunil Gavaskar
4.Geoff Boycott-Barry Richards
5.Jack Hobbs-Herbert Sutcliffe
6.Virendra Sehwag-Graeme Smith
7.Saed Anwar-Mark Taylor
8.Geoff Boycott-Roy Fredricks
9.Conrad Hunte-Bill Lawry
10.Glen Turner-Gordon Greenidge
11.Graham Gooch-Sunil Gavaskar
12.Geoff Boycott-Gordon Greenidge

The technical correctness of Hutton combined with the innovative ability of Morris made a perfect opener. One could bat for his life in nay conditions he other was a match-winner.Barry Richards and Gavaskar blended technical correctness with innovation and agression in perfect proportion. So did the Barry-Boycott combination.Boycott and Gavaskar were the epitome of technical perfection while Barry posseed every possible component of a perfect batsmen.

Best pairs including those of different eras ranked in order of merit when rolled into one.

1.Len Hutton -Victor Trumper
2.Vijay Merchant-Victor Trumper
3.Len Hutton-Virendra Sehwag
4.Jack Hobbs-Victor Trumper
5.Sunil Gavaskar-Victor Trumper
6.Len Hutton-Arthur Morris
7.Virendra Sehwag-Jack Hobbs
8.Sunil Gavaskar-Virendra Sehwag
9.Barry Richards-Jack Hobbs
10.Barry Richards-Len Hutton
11.Sunil Gavaskar-Barry Richards
12.Len Hutton-Gordon Greenidge.
13.Hanif Mohammad-Barry Richards
14.Vijay Merchant-Gordon Greenidge
15.Graham Gooch-Sunil Gavaskar

Hutton -Trumper at no 1 as it wast he blending of a technician with a magician. No batsmen posessed more wizardry than Trumper while for sheer technique Hutton was at the top of the tree.Merchant Trumper at 2 because Merchant was virtually the technical equal of Hutton.Hutton-Sehwag perfectly blends technical and attacking skill at it's highest Zenith. For sheer domination nonone surpassed Viru.Hobbs and Trumper were both masters on bad wickets .Gavaskar was about the equal; of Hutton nad Merchant technically and would make a perfect opener when blended with Sehwag.

Difficult to mix players from different era, I would rather pick pairs from same era.

Statistically best ever pair was probably 1920s English pair of JB Hobbs - Herbert Sutcliffe; but I’ll pick Vic Trumper with Hobbs for my first pair.

2nd pair is a bit unique since they did play together at FC level but one hardly played in Test cricket - I'll pick the Hampshire pair of Barry Richards - CG Grineedge.

Sunny Gavaskar and Sehwag. A daredevil murderer of attacks combined with arguably the most technically correct batsman ever.

On a non serious note, the blending together of Mohammed Hafeez and Saleem Elahi as ‘the’ opening batsman in test cricket on a seaming wicket would be a mathematicians dream come true — just think of all the trigonometry lessons on display with the angled bat, edges to slips at very fine and varied angles and not to mention the attempted cover drives of an angled bat ending up past third man going on a tangent, and making a mockery of all laws of sine and cosine.
