In this list I am in order of merit rating the best bowling performances in lost causes in test matches.

1.Wasim Akram's 6-62 and 5-98 at Melbourne in 1989-90

Bowling prowess at it's highest creativity at it's deepest representing the epitome of fast bowling perfection.I can never forget the deliveries atht dismissed David Boon shouldering arms and having Steve Waugh caught behind.

2.Michael Holding's 5-45 and 6-62 at M.C.G.in 1981-82

Equivalent of a Rolls Royce car on a cricket field brilliantly blending pace with controlled seam movement on a helpful Melbourne track.Bowling skill at it's supreme level.

3.Wasim Akram's 6-63 and 5-49 at Antigua in 2000

Bad umpiring robbed Pakistan of a win when Wasim created an impact of lightning.

Some eronous umpiring decisions robed Pakistan of a famous win with Imran dictating proceedings like few cricketers have ever done.Brilliant blending pf pace and speed.

I haven't seen a better performance in a losing cause than Shoaib Akhtar vs Australia at Colombo in 2002.

In recent years, Ajmal vs SA at Cape Town in 2013, if we ignore the chucking issue.

Absolutely no question about the first one - Ian Chappel is almost a racist when it comes to praising someone playing against AUS & he admitted that I have never seen anyone Bowling so many good deliveries in a match. I have seen hostile pace, frightening bouncer war, leathal cutters, prodigious late swing - but never seen a mix of everything in one package. Akram was around 27 at that time; probably at his bowling prime for 2/3 years starting from that series - AUS, WI, ENG, NZ, SAF everywhere he was almost unplayable. Unfortunately, that was the start of the dark days when PCB started prioritizing ODI over Test hence Akram didn't have enough matches in his hay days.

Any given day, I'll take Wasim of that 3-5 years as my new ball partner with Marshall or Lillee in my dream XI.

Some great picks 👍.

I believe, you have picked only those you have seen live or archived; which is fine.

Out of those List, I think Foster bowled outstandingly for his 8/108 (probably bowled almost 50 overs) at Headingley '87 (Malik played an even better innings). Might have bowled better than 16th spot to be honest.

Also, from your list Sir Richard is missing - he had 7 Test with 10for; not sure Kiwis avoided defeat every time. For such List, Hadlee is a must - he was the ultimate one man army. I had a question to PP long back - who is THE most under rated cricketer in PP history - it's Hadlee with some margin; never seen him in any list of PP; but that guy carried Kiwis for 2 decades among cricket elites in the toughest era of cricket.

Since you have picked a 5for for Alderman (no issues, he was one of the best ever on his condition); I do believe Asif of the 2006 SAF tour deserves a mention - he was phenomenal in that series & time & again proved how solid Jaques was at 3.

Can't recall which match, but in 1981 AUS tour Imran had a great Test in losing effort, but might not make top 10 here.

Last but not the least - how can you miss Marshall at SCG '88-89!!!! On a dead slow spinners wicket (Border took 11 in the match!!!!) he had a master class of fast-medium tight bowling for a figure like 29-10-35-5 or so. I saw detailed hightlights of that bowling - still wondering how the Aussies scored those 35 or so runs!!!!!

Philander bowled brilliantly in a losing test against Australia (think Cummins) helped win Australia the game.
