I wouldn't mind Abdullah and saud at 3 and 4 given their better SR's then babar and rizwan.
This is key.
Both Abdullah and Saud are decent. The problem Pakistan is having (which they have created themselves due to wrong decisions taken by Misbah) is that they desperately cannot drop Fakhar, and they are clueless about where to fit him in knowing that they have to play Rizwan as an opener or perish.
If Pakistan did things the correct way and not in the toxic way Misbah operated, they could actually have a decent line up with 7 batsmen all playing according to a correct position…and not 4 openers being shifted here and there whilst two below par middle order T20 batsmen occupying opening spots.
Abdullah in comparison to Babar actually wants to improve and play modern cricket. He’s got a bit of a poor attitude (Hafeez picked up on it and I could actually sense it too during the PSL), but as a batsman he clearly wants to improve his shots range and strike rate, nor is he afraid to take risks.
Yes Abdullah could be the correct type of player at 3 or 4 but only if you have the correct type of openers. There is no way in hell would I accept Abdullah at 3 or 4 after Babar and Rizwan. After Fakhar, Sharjeel, Saim, Sahibzada, Harris type players he would be good.
THERE IS NO COMPROMISE WHEN IT COMES TO TW0 DESTRUCTIVE OPENERS IN T20 CRICKET
That’s the direct approach you take regardless. Your number 3 has to be the best, technically strongest batsman in the side, and your number 4 has to be his deputy with the bat. 5-7 is where you load up your muscle hitters. 3 solid lower order hitters who if needed can bat in the top order and not look like tailenders such as Shadab for crying out load.
As for Saim. He isn’t in the category of Gayle, DeQock, Pooran type players. So you do question as to why he can be considered to open if you are not going to open with that type of player on the other end. However, his biggest advantage is that he is technically a solid bat against spin and pace, in fact he is a high quality player or using pace to his advantage which compensated for his lack of natural power. He showed that he is a good T20 player who can attack pace in the powerplay, and he is not afraid to loft the ball and aim for 6s. Plus, his sixes in the PSL where the best sixes by a Pakistani batsman in the entire tournament. High quality shots. He is in the same mould as Conway and Malan. He can definitely work as this kind of player for Pakistan.
If you want to try and become Gayle and DeQock..that’s not for him (Saim), that’s for Fakhar, Sharjeel and Saim. They can play like those names, not Saud unfortunately.
