Quoting senior administration officials, The Washington Post reported Sunday that Trump “has been known to affect an Indian accent” to imitate Modi.

Donald Trump allegedly puts on an Indian accent when he repeats comments made by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The POTUS and Mr Modi are said to have a warm relationship, but this latest revelation may cause tension between the two countries. The detail was revealed by the Washington Post in a report on a meeting between the two world leaders last year.

Mr Trump is said to have imitated the accent of Mr Modi, who can speak and understand English but prefers to speak in his native Hindi, and claimed that he said to him: ‘Never has a country given so much away for so little in return’ as the United States in Afghanistan. He also claimed the Indian leader’s comments was evidence that the rest of the world saw the US as being taken advantage of in Afghanistan. Since the revelation, a number of people have branded Mr Trump’s alleged behaviour ‘appalling’.

US Congressman, Raja Krishnamoorthi, shared a statement on his Twitter, which said: ‘I was appalled to read that President Trump reportedly affected an Indian accent to imitate Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. ‘Americans are not defined by their accents, but by their commitment to this nation’s values and ideals.’ It’s not the first time Trump has been called out for mocking accents.

Last year, he was criticised for using an exaggerated Spanish accent during a speech marking Hispanic Heritage Month at the White House. And in another speech in Delaware, the president claimed he called up his credit card company to find out whether their customer support was based in the US or overseas.

He said: ‘Guess what, you’re talking to a person from India. How the hell does that work?’ He then mocked the response he allegedly received when he asked where the call handler was from. ‘We are from India’, Mr Trump said.
He's at it again.

Think Modi will be pleased that after Bibi, he now has an another admirer. Should take it as a compliment.

Was this before or after he rolled out the fabled red carpet?

So he reportedly uses an Indian accent to relay one sentence that Modi said, and now that's become prime time news. Can't expect anything less from the media.

Where have you been living in the past 12 months? Everything Trump says or does, is front page news.

Trump seems to have a thing for imitating foreign accents:

Can't blame him, Indian accents are funny lol. We got so many Indian students here that speak like that Modi guy :)) .

When is imitation a form of flattery and when is it an insult?

I was watching Modi ji's interview the other day, and he said that because of him, now Indians are respected the world over, and people look up to Indians when they see the blue passport. This is something our Pakistani friends cannot digest.

Pakistanis I met have the exact same North Indian accent.

There is no Indian accent. People from different states have different English accents.

Pakistani accent is nothing like any Indian accent. The punjabis have same accent ( eg Inzi ) as Indian punjabis, but the Urdu speakers have good diction as Urdu requires polished pronunciation.

Oh can you post an example of a north indian accent?

Watch Virat Kohli's English. Gives you an idea how a Delhi wala speaks. Same with people from Haryana or UP. Very little difference in their accents. I have spoken to Pakistanis in US and they have the exact same accent like your typical North Indian guy.

As you move to non-hindu speaking areas like Gujarat, Maharashtra (Not Mumbai), Bengal, South India, the accents differ to a greater extent.

He’s done something similar before.

Most of the Pakistanis who go to America adopt fake American accent which is cringeworthy. For e.g: Momina Mustehsan

But isn't Gujarat like right next to Pakistan?

Thank you... saved me the trouble of typing it out :srini

I've been told I have a "neutral accent" whatever that means.

One thing is for sure, the Indian accent is alot more pronounced than the Pakistani accent. Accents aren't a bad thing. You are speaking someone else's language with the rules of your own. Infact accents are a very good thing. It adds color to a conversation.

However, a head of state should be the last person to mock other's accent. This guy is a proper chimpanzee.

I don't see anything wrong with it, this is like complaining about Apu being a stereotype Indian. If it's true, and Indians are okay with it, why should it be seen as a bad thing?

My coworkers are all 50+, white, and republicans...they can't do the the Indian accent but they ALWAYS shake their head when talking about India or Indians.

But isn't Gujarat like right next to Pakistan?

Gujrati is a language by itself. May be Pak side Gujjus might have the same accent as Modi.

I read that most kids are taught Urdu at home. So the newer generations accent will be similar to North Indian accent.

I watch videos of Dr.Nauman once in a while on PTV Sports. He speaks exactly like a North Indian. Pervez Musharraf is another example. He has strong Indian accent.

I don't think he is mocking India, infact he is just annoyed at the American system of how the calls are all handled abroad. In reality he needs India for the tech knowledge and military trade etc. so you will always hear him quickly praising or saying something positive about India even though at 1st it might sound as if he is complaining about them.

Trump is an absolute racist toole but for some of our Ind friends its ok if he does this because he hates PK more.

Indians will never understand Trump and his ilk have no love for their ethnicity, culture or even country. A racist is a racist against all but as long as India needs the US as it's big brother, they will brush this under the table and make excuses for him.

Barely noticed a difference in accent there, to be honest.

You stay around them for 1-2 weeks and you will be doing it too!

Thankfully we don't talk about India often nor do we have Indian clientele. In my line of work the Indian stereotype is one where they're considered stingy/cheap. The Indians and Asians (Chinese & Korean) are one customer base we have purposefully stayed away from.

Trump may or may not be mocking Modi's accent, but he is on record saying that he loves Hindus and loves Indians. So we will not let haters drive a wedge between this natural friendship between the leader of the most powerful democracy and the people of the most populous democracy. In fact we would love him even if he hates us, because at least he also hates those who hate us the most.

Wow. Are you listening to yourself? And I am pretty sure you will be the first one to complain about discrimination on the basis of religion!

By the sounds of it nobody likes you much.

I didn't say anything wrong and I think most indians could careless thats why they put no effort in improving their accent when speaking. I kinda even respect that its almost like thug life when my manager (who is indian) writes an email I can barely understand or comprehend but he's been around 25+ years so meh.

Not really. I as a brown Muslim in the US have dealt with stereotype and discrimination enough. It exists and what I said was actually true. This is how it is and you just have to work around it.

It is hate that guides us, that drives us and binds us. We would be mocked by you just for being indians regardless we support trump or not, so if we can't get your love, we will get your hate instead.

It's true, they don't care. Indians are really proud of their cultures lol, many of my Pakistani relatives and friends tell me that Indians even bring their homemade curries to work, they don't care how strong the odor is and the whole office ends up smelling like spices and coconut oil lol. More power to them for repping their culture lol, most of us Pakistanis are pretty whitewashed.

Disagree. I sometimes wish partition had never happened so I could admire Trump as much as my Indian friends.

Why don't you admire Trump? Didn't he once say that Pakistanis are wonderful people and Nawaz Sharif is very intelligent?

Trump is a real clown, can't believe he is the president of United States of America. One you got to give it to him, he is in the news every day for something or the other.

I have no hate for Ind, read my posts. I have a problem with Modi and his fascists.

Maybe not you, but we, your guest posters have constantly been made to feel bad by a group of people, being mocked for our skinny legs, our skin complexion, our accent, our head movement, our clothes, our oily hair, everything. Always made to feel subhuman primitives. So why surprise when we don't support whom you want us to support. We know we will never get your love, no matter how hard we try.
