Salman Butt was a fixer but at least he did his time and is now working hard to regain fitness and become match fit to resume his international career. One positive I see is that he continues to work hard and hasn't given up.

Umar Akmal on the other hand is not a fixer but has a very poor attitude and seems to shoot him self in the foot every time there is a glimpse of a chance for him. Seems a mess on and off the field and is letting his career drain away.

Who would you rather have?

false equivalence

Umar Akmal is in this situation just because he is absolute muppet.

Id have neither. Most would too.

Also just on cricketing form neither deserve a spot in the national team

Also Umar Akmal is free to use the NCA

So is Salman Butt

Neither will have undivided attention of the national team coaching staff or have the coaches at their calling since they arent in the team and that is something Umar Akmal cannot get through his thick head.

Umar Akmal still acts like a child, while Butt wanted money. Ethically Umar is "better" but morally you have to say Butt is since he's trying to get back into the team and is working hard to do that, while keeping under the radar.

Salman Butt was always a very hard working and good cricketer, it was that one moment or should I say one act of sheer stupidity that ruined it all.

He was always highly regarded in terms of work ethics by people like Geoff Lawson, Waqar Younus and Inzamam who have been his coach or captain.

But I don't hear any words or complaints coming out of Salman Butt's mouth regarding not have my coaching access, unpreferential treatment etc.

It's surprising how every member of the 'Gang of 5' keeps getting into contention of the national team selection without any reprecussions or whatever they might have done previously.

Added to the fact that they both represent a certain region and have performed nil in terms of on field international performance it truly shows how corrupt our system is and who control Pakistan cricket as a whole.

Umar Akmal is remarkably immature or possibly suffers from mental illness. Salman Butt is a convicted criminal who has done jail time for selling his country and corrupting his juniors.

There is no question here, Butt is sorry he got caught not sorry for what he did, he still acts entitled. Regrettably he has friends in high places

Thats not the point.

Regret or not - would rather have a fixer trying hard to gain his place in the national team vs. a non fixer who doesn't care about his career anymore?

If I had to choose - I would go with Butt.

Why is it that we have to choose ?? Just because they're both from Lahore and one has to be in the team ?? Butt inflicted the most devastating of evils on Pakistan cricket which unfortunately we are still suffering from to this day.

The fact that a leading Pakistani discussion board is having this conversation clearly shows what's wrong with our society (in general) and proves that even after doing everything he has done to harm the country there are folks who seem to be his sympathizers and would rather label his ouster as some sort of 'Yahoodi' Sazish than condeming the horrendous action of his, which BTW cause pain and embarrasment for the entire nation.

We Karachities are day in day out blamed for brining regionalism into the discussion whenever we try to point towards the many injustices that are handed down to us but I guess IT IS OK to have a discussion about things when the shoe is on the other Foot and the said players in question are from a certain domicile.

Very Very Disappointing to say the least !!

I am speaking hypothetically man.

Of course it is not a direct swap for a place in the team - Butt is an opener whilst Umar Akmal is a pseudo middle/late order hack lol

Butt committed a crime and caused embarrassment and vitriol for the nation - no denying that.

But he continues to train and and try and resume his career like a professional - traits that I admire. Yes Fawad Alam also has these traits before someone accuses me of regioinal bias :)

If he was a drama queen and continued to make media statements crying all the time like Umar Akmal - my opinion would be different.

As I see it:

Salman Butt is analogous to a certain recently removed Prime Minister.

Umar Akmal has the same rotund body shape and impulsively unfiltered social media habits of a certain US President.

Huh?

Salman Butt is more analagous to Hillary Clinton. Had a controversial past but maintains a professional image when on TV and in office.

Butt has shown no remorse and has treated his country with contempt.

I'd rather go with spoilt man child than the unrepentant criminal if I had to choose

Besides people forget that Butt was a mediocre player overall and that even now a lot of his recent domestic runs have been selfish and detrimental to his team
