Tough one. Seeing as the openers are non existent babar batted at both 2 and three and eventually transitioned into opening.
The change didn’t effect output if anything increased it while easing his nerves early on in the power play. He could bat freely with no wickets down and hit the boundaries while the field is up.
For me honestly babar is a revelation and pairing him the Fakhar is a dream team. Reminds me of the deadly combos of Pakistani openers in the past such as Kamran Akmal and salman butt. Imran nazir and co. Khaled Latif and sharjeel was a match made in heaven sadly it ended.
Babar Azam's average of 62 for this calendar year is boosted due to the 3 x not outs (including 97*). His strike rate of 126 is okay.
Fakhar Zaman is averaging 34 but at a phenomenal SR of 149.
Lets compare their Batting indexes (Avg + SR):
Note that averages and strike rates have been rounded to the nearest whole number.
Babar: 190
Fakhar: 183
So not much between the two statistically but I've voted for Fakhar because of his clutch winning innings (91 off 46 balls) in the tri-series final chase (184 target) against Australia. Also as mentioned Babar's average is inflated with those 3 x not out knocks.
It's so easy to look at stats at face value and look at averages + top run scorer alone without context.
Nothing wrong with Babar Azam getting the vote since he's had a very good year in T20Is as evident by the batting index, however he is not easily ahead as some posters are citing here.
Babar Azam is ahead in the overall batsman of the year poll so no doubt he should win this one too. Based on the prior sentence, no prizes for guessing who I voted for.
