Theoretically, if Rahane and Pujara disappoint further in the near future, one of the two could be dropped

With KL Rahul finding exceptional form as an opener, and Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill doing very well, one of the three could be slotted in the middle order. (Why waste them on the bench?)

Who of the three would you prefer to open and who would you like to play in the middle order?

It would be a tad foolish to shift Sharma down the order, when it's patently clear that the team management wasted four or five years of his test career by doing just that.

Gill and Rahul are definitely more suited to batting in the middle order.

Rohit and Rahul are a top class opening pair. India should look to slot in Gill at 3 and Shaw at 5.

Shaw has a weakness against the moving ball which is why he could be more productive at 5.

Rohit and Rahul seem to have now figured out the opening paradox, so would like to continue for a few games.

Shubman seems to be ideal candidate at #5 , but there are obvious flaws in him to be successful at #3. He looks to be prime candidate of lbw on incoming deliveries and also pokes at balls going away.

Vihari should be tried at #3 because he seems to be of pujara mould and also good against spin. Of course don't think Pujara is going anytime soon.

Prithvi Shaw and and Surya kumar could be given more chances in future and could slot in at #5.

Rohit and Rahul seems like the best option for India in my opinion.

With Shubnam as the back-up opener.

Not impressed by Agarwal. Strikes me as a home-track bully.

No more mistakes about Rohit & Rahul. If they are in the team, they should open (in all formats) till they retire or severely out of form. Others should compete in the middle order...

Shubman Gill at 3 will give India a cushion if one of their openers goes early.

When Rohit eventually retires, he can start opening the batting and allow someone else to claim that position.

This will be my top 6:-

Rohit
Rahul
Gill
Kohli
Vihari/Sundar
Pant(wkt)

Shubman at 3. Groom him to be the opener once Rohit retires in 2-3 years.

Vihari at 5. The guy deserves his chance. Else prithvi

Its high time Gill and Shaw are regular part Indian team as management would want they have couple of quality youngsters ready to replace Kohli and Rohit in next 2-3 years along with maybe strengthening their current lineup.

Why was Pujara dropped again? Dude has a terrific record with the bat in Australia against Australia as an asian player.

They allo had a lean patch at the same. Kohli, Pujara, Rahane. So they decided to phase out Rahane first then Pujara. They brought them back a couple of times. THen they decided to phase them out since they were inconsistent. The thing about Pujara is unlike the clown Kohli he plays first class leagues. He scored mountains of runs in county. He also topped the chart in Indian domestic. Rahane topped the domestic T20 league with great strike rate. Even now Rahane/Pujara are miles better than Kohli in Australia. It is the star value that is saving Kohli. The amount of mental torture that Pujara gave to Australia affected their psyche massively
