Who is best suited to be the next Indian captain in T20 cricket?

Sharma?
Rahul?
Pant?
Ashwin?

Sharma is probably the best short-term option.

Rohit Sharma for next 3-4 years.

After that, it can be anyone between Rahul, Pant, Shreyas or Prithvi.

Rohit Sharma is a clear favourite for the role and with his wealth of experience, there's no-one more clearer. As long as Virat Kohli doesn't interfere.

So, he qualifies into your playing XI ahead of Shardul Thakur and Deepak Chahar?

I have been saying for past few months that Pandya should only represent India in T20s. I would like to see how he captains the side. I would pick only one out of Thakur and Chahar in favourable conditions. :inti

So, according to you, he should not be in India's playing XI in ODI format but in T20s, he should captain the Indian team?

Rohit for few years.

After that anyone who has good record captaining in domestics and is guaranteed a position in eleven.

So, according to you, he should not be in India's playing XI in ODI format but in T20s, he should captain the Indian team?

He has a bowling average of 41 in ODIs and he hardly completes his bowling quota in ODIs these days. Too much of a risk to play him in ODIs as a batsman alone.

In T20s I would like to see how he captains the team. I think T20 is his best format. Just because he has failed in Tests and ODIs so far, it doesn't mean he can't do well in T20s and captain that side.

Same way KL Rahul's best formats are ODIs and T20s. :inti

Batting great Sunil Gavaskar feels KL Rahul is captaincy material and should be groomed as a future leader of the Indian cricket team.

Gavaskar made the comments after Virat Kohli announced that he would step down from T20 captaincy after the World Cup. Rohit Sharma is set to take over from Kohli. Also Read - Fans go Berserk After Virat Kohli Decides to Step Down as T20I Captain After T20 World Cup

“It’s a good thing that the BCCI is looking ahead. It’s important to think ahead,” said Gavaskar on Sports Tak.

“If India are looking to groom a new captain, then KL Rahul can be looked at. He has performed well. Even now in England, his batting was very good. He has been performing well in IPL and 50-overs cricket as well at the international stage. He can be made vice-captain.”

“He has shown very impressive leadership qualities in the IPL. He hasn’t let the burden of captaincy affect his batting. His name can be taken into consideration, added Gavaskar.

Rohit should be the captain for 2022 world T20 and then Rahul or some other younger guy should take over.

Rahul is defn not captaincy material. None from his or Iyer’s generation.

My best bet would be Gill/Shaw if they can improve their batting after Rohit at helm for 3-4 years ofcourse.

I can't understand why People throwing Rahul's name..? He's not a captain material at all.. Look like edgy all the time.. From the current crop I think Washington Sundar is a good captaincy material but he needs to cement his place first..

Rohit is 34 so not sure if he can continue as captain for more than a year or two as India would like to use the format to groom some other player for the leadership role who can eventually take over another format or two.

I agree Rahul obviously doesnt look much like a captaincy material as of now but other guys who are younger are yet to solidify their position in the team and dont even have much captaincy experience as well. So would be a tricky call where Indian leadership goes from here unless one of the young guys really stand up, looks like a leader and solidify his position in this stop gap period.

Former India cricketer Vinod Kambli feels opening batsman Rohit Sharma will be India's skipper in the T20Is after the 2021 World Cup. Virat Kohli on Thursday announced that he would step down as the T20I skipper of the national side after the T20 World Cup slated to be played in the UAE in October-November this year. He will continue to be available for selection for the T20 format post the upcoming ICC event in 2021, which is hosted by the BCCI in UAE and Oman. "Now that Virat is stepping down from captaincy, I feel Rohit might get a chance. Virat will now play to his full potential as there will be no pressure on him. I want Virat to play freely," Kambli told ANI.

"I feel Rohit will take over as India's captain in T20I after the World Cup because he has led Mumbai Indians to win many times," he added.

"Now everyone will see, Virat's talent in the T20I. I am looking forward to India, Pakistan clash in the World Cup. The pressure and eagerness to perform well in those matches is immense," said Kambli.

Earlier in the day, Kohli said he arrived at his decision after discussing with head coach Ravi Shastri and opening batsman Rohit Sharma.

Kambli, the former batsman, said Kohli will now play freely. "It was a shocking decision for me, but now Virat will be feeling relaxed. Now we will see Virat the batsman because now he will be under no pressure," said Kambli.

Kohli has captained India in 45 T20Is with the side winning 27 out of those. India only lost 14 T20Is under Kohli captaincy while two games were tied and two matches had no results.

Rohit and it shouldn't even be a question. If BCCI had a few functioning brain cells and not just the $$$ in mind, they'd have appointed him as captain way back in 2015 itself after the world Cup exit under Dhoni. That after Rohit showcased his captaincy credentials by winning 2 IPL trophies in 3 years with a MI side that was nowhere as good as they're right now.

Split captaincy would have worked wonders for Indian cricket post Dhoni era but sadly it never materialized. Now I just hope against hope that Rohit gets captaincy in ODIs too and will lead us until the 2024 T20 Champions Trophy.

"Can Be Looked At": Sunil Gavaskar Names India Player Who Can Be Groomed As Future Captain

Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar has named his choice for the player who can be groomed to take over the India captaincy in future.

Virat Kohli's decision to step down as India's T20I captain after the ICC T20 World Cup in the UAE and Oman, scheduled to be held from October 17 to November 14, has surprised many cricket fans. The move has also triggered speculation over who would take over from Kohli as India's skipper in the shortest format of the game. While Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma, 34, is among the favourites for the job, there is also discussion over which players could be groomed to take over the mantle of captaincy in the long term.

According to former India captain Sunil Gavaskar, KL Rahul is one player who can be given more responsibility in the national team in order to pave the way for him to take over the captaincy in future.

"If you are thinking of a new captain, I think KL Rahul can be looked at. His performance has been very good. Even now in England, his batting was very good. He has been performing well in IPL and 50-overs cricket as well at the international stage. I think he can be made the vice-captain," Gavaskar told Sports Tak.

"He has shown very impressive leadership playing in the IPL. He hasn't let the burden of captaincy affect his batting," added Gavaskar.

The 29-year-old Rahul, who made his international debut in the Boxing Day Test against Australia in 2014, has played 40 Tests, 38 ODIs and 48 T20Is for India.

He also captains Punjab Kings in the IPL. He had represented Royal Challengers Bangalore and SunRisers Hyderabad in the tournament before moving to Punjab Kings in 2018.

Pandya has a strike rate of 116 in ODIs over a decent sample now. When you consider that Rohit, Kohli, Dhawan, Rahul and Jadeja all strike at below 95, it is a much superior outcome for a batsman coming at no.6. Strike rate plays a major role at no.6 and below.

Shardul can himself play at no.8 but if he needs to be picked ahead of one of Pandya or Jadeja, then actually Jadeja is the one who will be replaced because both Jaddu and Pandya average same but there is a difference in their strike rate of 29. So, Pandya is comfortably a better bat than Jadeja in ODIs and it is Jadeja's position which will be taken by Shardul.

In terms of ability, Pandya's best bet is T20 but in terms of performance, it has been ODIs, especially vs top teams like Australia and England.

The one and only Hitman.

Post that, we will have to wait for a new player to become the captain.

KL & Pant look duds as captain.

Why is Ashwin even in the poll?

Rohit will be the natural choice. Would be surprised if it is someone else. Shekhar Dhawan would have had a chance if he was still a regular in the T20 side.

Hopefully the guys who wanted KL as next indian captain got reality check yesterday.. his team just need 4 runs in 6 ball with 8 wickets lefts and his his body language is like they need 20+ plus in last over with only 2 wickets remaining.. never ever should considered for captaincy..

IPL 2021: 'I can’t really believe he is 24': Watson, Swann on how DC skipper Pant’s tactics are 'a stroke of genius'

Delhi Capitals (DC) skipper Rishabh Pant celebrated his 24th birthday yesterday by helping DC beat the in-form Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by 3 wickets and return to the top of the points table. With that win, the IPL 2020 runners-up have assured themselves of a top-2 finish in IPL 2021 and after the game on Monday, former cricketers Shane Watson and Graeme Swann heaped rich praise on the Delhi cricketer.

Pant was handed the captaincy a few weeks before the start of the current season as former captain Shreyas Iyer was ruled out of the first half due to a shoulder injury. Since then, Pant has led DC to 10 wins in 13 matches and has marshalled his troops very well. (FULL IPL 2021 COVERAGE)

While speaking to Star Sports, Watson said that Pant is fortunate to have a coach like Ricky Ponting and how he has been left impressed with his leadership.

"He is very fortunate to have a guy like Ricky Ponting. I think he is one of the best cricket minds I have played under. With Ricky Ponting guiding him all the way, he has been very impressive. Initially, when he got the captaincy, I had a few question marks but he has done well, marshaling his troops and Delhi Capitals have played beautiful cricket," Watson elaborated.

On the other hand, former England spinner Swann, admitted that he was not completely convinced by Pant's approach at first but also added that he is now getting things done.

"Absolutely, because he is such a young guy and seeing the way he played his cricket, he seemed a bit of a maverick with his slam-bang approach. But I think it’s a stroke of genius. I think he really got along well with Ricky Ponting who knows how to get things done. Rishabh Pant is adventurous, he likes to take things on and it (The move) has worked brilliantly. I can’t really believe he is 24. He has got a decade of top-level cricket," Swann commented.
