Simple question guys, who was Pakistan greatest Test batsman and why.

JM For me.

Not going by stats but just the fact that his presence made me feel that we had a fighter at the crease.

Javed Miandad for sure as he had the ability to play under immense pressure. Even in those days we mostly lost a few early wickets leaving him to soak up all the pressure. Not the most naturally talented batsmen compared to a Zaheer or Inzamam nevertheless incredibly effective jealously guarding his wicket. I think it was Viv Richards who said he would choose Javed to bat for his life if ever needed. High praise indeed.

Personally never saw Javed Miandad bat, thus can't really comment. The people who I have seen bat is Inzi and YK, Inzi played some great innings and that too under pressure.

I followed Younis Khan the most, thus picked him. To score 10,000 runs is no mean feat, considering he was the first Pakistani to do so. He had a massive appetite for runs. Still, remember the innings at The Oval, don't remember the commentator's name, but he said "Ominous signs for England this..." and that was when he was around 60-70 runs into that innings. People knew, if YK gets set, not easy to remove him.

Can never decide out of the top four, but picked Yousuf because he didn't get to follow his peak when he signaled his rise to greatness. He could've been in the 10k runs club, played more crucial and beautiful innings that he might have pulled ahead of the others.

But, Inzi and Miandad for pressure. Yousuf as appreciation that top batsmen who play beautiful strokes in test cricket are rare. Younis for tireless determination and effort.

Why do you say that? Mind explaining.

The guy is rated highly among a lot of cricketers and fans. Would be nice to know why you think he's overrated.

He was an undoubtedly great batsman but he had flaws which are not aknowledged on this forum. He failed miserably against WI and never did well against Australia when they had Lillee. The only great fast bowler he did well against was Hadlee.

His era was definitely tougher for batsmen, no argument from me there, but in a twisted way, the same reason why he gets admiration (his era was tough) is also why he gets undue praise.

Simply on weight of consistency, longevity and very good overseas performances, Younis has him beat in my opinion.

When JM played his 100th test, he had scored 7701 runs at an average of 57.04. No other Pakistani batsman has ever managed to maintain career average of 55 for long time.

He is head and shoulders above of other Pakistani batsmen in that way. However, during same time, he had home average of 71 and away average of 46.

Javed Miandad was acknowledged more by his peers

Javed Miandad by a long way. Averaged 50+ from first match till the day he retired.

You wouldn't find javed to be hopping around like a bunny against medium pacers like younis was.

Hopping or whatever, Younis was effective. That is all that counts. Javed failed against Lillee in Aus, and was nothing special in England. YK scored runs against Starc+Hazelwood which is a very formidable attack and hit a double hundred against Anderson/Broad to square the series. Whatever his technique was, it worked in the end.

Looks to me most of the posters arent 90's kids. Although I haven't seen the stats, Saeed Anwar was a poetry in motion. Have seen most of the Pakistani greats but I dont rate any the way I rate Anwar.

Miandad by a mile. YK is second best although statistically his number look way better than his compatriots.

The other 6 innings in England that he failed in before don't count? If you only look at hundreds, then Miandad has hundreds against Marshall, Ambrose and Walsh in WI.

I didn't see Javed play any FC games (was a year old when he played his last test innings) however from whatever cricket I've seen since 1997/98 there hasn't been a bigger fighter at the crease, and off it, than Younis Khan!

The guy is the benchmark when it comes to gutsiness and to go along with the latter he has the best numbers (home and away) for any Pakistani Test Bat. Inzi, Yousuf, Saleem Malik, Anwar were all World Class themselves but Younis edges all of them in pure grit and determination and standing up when it matters the most.

That is the one series which people always bring up. The ONLY time Miandad did even decently against WI (he averaged 29, yes 29 against WI overall).

And even this series is overrated. Ambrose was an inexperienced rookie who averaged 40 in the series and was dropped after the series. And Marshall was playing half fit and only played 1 test.

I think it was Michael Holding!

WE must accept the fact that Younis Khan is Pakistan's greatest batsmen of all time. :)
