To me two stalwarts stand amongst the overseas fast bowlers to bowl in Australia.Their figures are simply staggering and head and shoulders above anyone else. They took accuracy and control to regions of the sublime Richard Hadlee was the ultimate epitome of control while Curtly Ambrose attained level of accuracy arguably no paceman ever surpassed.Hadlee wast he more calculating or intelligent but Ambrose was the more fearful or lethal.Arguably Curtyl's spell of 7-33 at Perth in 1992-93 was the best ever spell by a pace bowler in Australia .

If I had a gun on my head then I would chose Curtly Ambrose as he could be more explosive or volatile in a single spell and could rip the flesh of the opponents with more venom. At his best Ambrose resembled a cowboy mowing down his oponents resembling a bulldozer.Hadlee was a greater judge of opponents weaknesses and moved the ball more.Statistically he has no equal in Australia amongst overseas paceman. What gave Ambrose the most marginal of edges was the prodigious or disconcerting bounce he obtained from just short of a length.Ambrose could make a side reel like nine pins rolling.Ambrose played in two 5 test series in Australia while Hadlee never did.Hadlee bowled for a much weaker attack and side than Curtly but in some ways that statistically worked towards his advantage.

Malcolm Marshall just misses out as he was outstanding only in 1983-84.Although more complete I back Ambrose or Hadlee by a whisker to overshadow Marshall .Wasim Akram at his best in 1989-90 was arguably the best of them all but was never successful again. In 1981-82 Michael Holding was right up there.

Inmy final overseas quartet Joel Garner would come very close if you evaluate his consistency down under and could well join Hadlee,Ambrose and Marshall.

Overseas fast bowlers usually struggle in OZ. Amby was the sole exception. Destroyed them over there which is rare.

Sir Hadlee destroyed Australia to win a historic test series for his country. Stats support his claim as the greatest foreign pace bowler down under.

He was great everywhere. A true legend of the game.

Tough to look beyond Hadlee.

To be fair, Hadlee faced Australia when they were at an all-time low.

Curtly “Talk-To-No-Man” Ambrose.

Even in his twilight in 96-97, which I believe was his last tour to AUS, he took 19 in the 4 Tests he played at 23.4.

That may be higher than his overall of 20.99 but it just shows you that if there was one man who mastered the length to bowl on Australian wickets, it was Curtly.

Imran and Hadlee instantly come to mind, but they were before my time. Wasim in the early to mid 90s (two tours) both come to mind, he was exceptional at Melbourne. In ODIs he w as just as good and stepped it up in the world cup in 92 and bowled freakishly good.

Ambrose is the other guy who comes to mind, both economical and a wicket taking threat, which is a rarity.

Curtly on his tours to AUS:

88-89: 26 wickets at 21.46

92-93: 33 wickets at 16.42

96-97: 19 wickets at 23.4

That’s 78 wickets at 20.43 which is lower than his overall average by .56.

In a single spell Ambrose more lethal,However consistently perhaps Hadlee had more of a repertoire. To break a partnership Hadlee may have been more skillful.

The post I referred to was about the 1985 Aussies.

Richard Hadlee who was amazing in Australia except in his first tour as a rookie. Ambrose had good support from other bowlers.

73/74 - 7@36
80/81 - 19@19
85/86 - 33@12
87/88 - 18@19.6

Nah.
Rahat Ali was the best overseas pace bowler to bowl in Australia.

Fight me

Absolute beast. I wonder why we dont hire him as a bowling coach on Aus tour.

curtly got his wickets in 1996-1997 when the pitch had a crack which suited him.
Remember at first two test he was struggling to take wickets.
Ian bishop bowled well consistent on that tour.

i think kagiso rabada will be best overseas pacer in australia not sure about bumrah because the batsman he bowled were mediocre and rookie except khawaja and bumrah was having shami and improved ishant to support him.
Mohammed shami bowled well in australia tour 2014 but he didnt have anyone to support him.
