Here I am analyzing and ranking in order of merit the most unfortunate losers in world cup history

1.South Africa 1999

2.Pakistan 1975 and 1979

4.West Indies 1983

5.England 1992.

6.South Africa 1992 and 1996

South Africa to me were the moral champions in 1999 if you consider their performances overall in the tourney and team strength. They came within a whisker of winning the semis and just buckled under pressure.Infact it also acme within touching distance of winning the previous game against Australia when Steve Waugh was dropped.

Pakistan were man to man in the league of West Indies in 1975 and 79 and in games against the eventual champions looked virtually home and dry at one stage ,in both 1975 and 79.It all but beat England also in 1979 and at one stage even looked like beating Australia in the group game in 1975.Simply could not harness their incredible talent.

West Indies in 1983 were head and shoulders above everyone and simply threw in the towels to shatter the myth of invincibility.Morally they should have won by 7 wickets.

England were the most well-balanced and organized side of the 1992 tournament and convincingly conquered strong opposition be it South Africa or Australia.Simply lost their peak by the final.England would have possibly won had they retained the form of the group stage.

South Africa looked firm favourites before they capitulated to West Indies in the quarterfinals in 1996 just choking at the end.In 1992 they gave England a strong run for their money before being robbed of a possible win in the semi-final.

New Zealand in 1992. They were unfortunate that Martin Crowe got injured and Inzaman played an ATG innings

South Africa in the 1999 World Cup, definitely. I wonder whether their fans have got over it. I can guarantee we desi fans would have never got over it in our lifetime if we were in their place. It was the ultimate definition of a heartbreak.

It had to be SA in 1999. An absolute comic but unfortunate ending.

Bangladesh fans will tell you it's 2015 WC because they got robbed by "biased" umpiring decisions.

SA in 92, it was just completely out of their hands, unlike all the other ones which were chokes

South Africa in 2015. If the rain hadn't come , I think they may have got a score out of NZ reach. NZ nearly messed the chance up despite a great start.

Also think in 99 they were unlucky with that run out. Donald panicked at the worst time.

Spot on. In 1992, they were far behind in required run rate with barely any proper batsmen left before the rain arrived.

Rain robbed them big time in 2015. They were all set for a 400+ score.

It's kind of funny how rain always seems to ruin it for them :))

You Forgot Pakistan 1987 , Pakistan 90% favorite to beat Australia but Injuries, Sickness and some further bad luck. Ended the strongest Ever Pakistan (in terms of opposition) world cup team.
