PTI’s Sanam Javed seeks court protection against arrests

Social media activist Sanam Javed, affiliated with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has filed a petition in the Lahore High Court (LHC) concerning her further arrests in additional cases.

The petition was submitted by Javed's father and is set for a hearing with LHC's Justice Shahram Sarwar.

The federal government, the Punjab government, and the Inspector General (IG) of Punjab Dr Usman Anwar are among 11 entities named as respondents.

The petition prays that Javed is being subjected to political 'retaliation'.

It further prays that the PTI member has faced arrests on unspecified grounds despite not being named in any case. The petition claimed that Javed is being detained in a jail van until 7 pm every day in harsh conditions.

The petition requests a ban on her arrest without the court's approval, details of all cases against her, and a copy of her detention orders.

Earlier this month, on June 5, Javed was once again arrested in a separate case.

The development came after the admission by Sargodha jail authorities, before LHC's Justice Muhammad Waheed Ahmad Khan, that they had received a "robkar" pertaining to another case in which she had previously secured bail from an anti-terrorism court.

Javed's father had filed a habeas corpus petition in the Lahore High Court, seeking the release of his daughter from what he claimed was her illegal detention by the jail authorities.

The Court also discovered that the arrest was not made during the protest. They also pointed out persons involved in protest did not carry any illegal material.

The court emphasized that peaceful protest is a fundamental right and the charges could not be upheld due to lack of evidences.

She claimed that she was repeatedly arrested in new cases immediately after being released from others. The PTI activist’s petition stated that the ongoing legal actions against her were politically driven and requested the court to dismiss the case.

He expressed hope that the family would face the cases and wondered how many days the police would keep her wife in jail.

Footage on social media showed Islamabad police women taking Sanam into custody from her house after an Islamabad court discharged her from a case filed by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA). It was a reserved decision on FIA’s plea seeking her physical remand.

After the release, Sanam had left the court with her lawyers. The PTI had shared her pictures with her family and lawyers after the release. But it was short-lived as police arrested her from her house, leaving her family helpless.

The IHC heard a petition filed by Sanam Javed’s father for her release. The hearing was presided over by Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb, with Barrister Mian Ali Ashfaq representing Sanam.

Sanam Javed was present in the courtroom, along with IG Islamabad Ali Nasir Rizvi, FIA officials, and personnel from Balochistan Police.

The court ordered the police to present a complete one-year record against Sanam Javed and stopped them from arresting her until Thursday. The court allowed Sanam Javed to go home but warned that if she spoke a single word during this period, the court would revoke its order.

The lawyer assured the court that Sanam would not engage in such language going forward.

Punjab govt challenges Sanam Javed's case dismissal in Supreme Court

The Punjab government has challenged the Lahore High Court's decision to discharge Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Sanam Javed from a Gujranwala case in the Supreme Court.

This appeal, led by Maryam Nawaz, seeks to overturn the ruling made by a two-member bench headed by Justice Asjad Ghural.

The Lahore High Court had previously ordered the release of Sanam Javed, citing insufficient evidence to proceed with the charges related to the events of May 9.

Following her release, Javed was re-arrested in connection with other cases filed across multiple cities.

Sanam Javed had been detained in Lahore and faced numerous allegations stemming from various incidents on May 9.

After the high court’s decision, the Islamabad High Court also intervened, preventing her transfer to Quetta police custody and ordering her release.

The Punjab government argues that the High Court's decision to discharge Javed was premature and seeks a review by the Supreme Court to ensure a thorough examination of the charges against her.

This appeal underscores the ongoing legal challenges faced by PTI leaders amidst the current political climate.

The Supreme Court’s forthcoming decision will determine whether the High Court's ruling will be upheld or overturned, potentially impacting the broader legal landscape for political cases in Pakistan.

Courts urged to stop PTI social media activists abduction

The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf has launched a social media campaign seeking attention of the superior courts towards abductions of its social media activists and their close relatives across the country.

The party has posted pictures of its 10 social media activists, including its international media coordinator Ahmed Waqas Janjua who was picked up in wee hours of Saturday from his residence in Islamabad. Mr Janjua has also been a media adviser of PTI founder Imran Khan.

The PTI has also posted a CCTV footage of Ahmed Waqas Janjua’s enforced disappearance by persons in plainclothes and police officials.

“The judiciary has a job to do, and that is to prevent Pakistan from becoming a lawless territory,” the PTI tweeted from its official X handle and urged the judiciary to protect Pakistan and its citizens.

PTI leader Syed Zulfi Bukhari tweeted that Janjua and three other social media activists were abducted early Saturday morning. During the past two weeks, he stated, there had been a serious crackdown on party’s social media activists.

“Since the social media team was constantly doing international reporting of all the atrocities taking place in Pakistan, now my team is being abducted along with others. This continuous deterioration of basic human rights won’t be allowed to continue for long,” he stated.

PTI’s Punjab general secretary Hammad Azhar stated that a panel of senior lawyers had been constituted which would take up the matter of enforced disappearances of party’s social media activists.

He said the undemocratic mindset of the incumbent rulers and their sponsors was fast deteriorating the political scene in the country.

“There will be no use of venting their anger on the abducted social media activists. Release them,” Mr Azhar stated.

FIA seeks 10-day physical remand for Raoof Hasan

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has sought a 10-day physical remand for the Information Secretary of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Raoof Hasan.

On Monday, Islamabad Police arrested Hasan during a raid on the PTI Secretariat, seizing a computer and other items.

According to sources, authorities allege that the digital media cell at PTI's office had become a hub for international disinformation, where anti-Pakistan propaganda was being carried out in collaboration with enemy agencies.

However, PTI condemned the raid, accusing law enforcers of seizing affidavits from MNAs and MPAs that stand crucial for verifying party affiliations and could significantly impact the National Assembly's composition.

Hasan, along with other PTI members, was presented before Judicial Magistrate Abbas Shah's court. The FIA prosecutor argued that the remand was necessary to recover devices used for social media accounts, which are crucial for further investigation.

PTI’s Raoof Hasan handed over to CTD after being arrested in terrorism case

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Information Secretary Raoof Hasan has also been arrested in connection with a terrorism case. The Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Islamabad has granted a two-day physical remand to the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD).

According to Express News, Hasan's arrest came following the statement of Ahmed Janjua. The CTD presented Hasan before the ATC, where Judge Tahir Abbas Supra presided over the hearing. Hasan’s lawyer, Ali Bukhari, represented him in court.

During the hearing, Judge Supra inquired if Hasan had undergone a medical examination, to which Hasan confirmed he had. Despite medical issues, Hasan was shifted to jail.

Bukhari argued that Hasan was placed on judicial remand by the FIA the previous day and questioned the timing of the CTD's arrest. The prosecution clarified that Hasan was included in the investigation yesterday, but the formal arrest was made today.

The judge noted that the supplementary report from July 30 indicated Hasan was included in the investigation from the court premises. Bukhari contended that this implied Hasan was effectively arrested yesterday and highlighted that Hasan had been in FIA custody for the past eight days.

He also pointed out that PTI leader was not named in the FIR but was arrested based on Janjua’s statement, alleging that Hasan had given Janjua Rs300,000 to incite terror. Bukhari argued that a physical remand was unnecessary for recovering the money.

Bukhari further noted that the Chief Justice of the Islamabad High Court had previously ordered the return of 32 individuals' mobile phones. Hasan’s mobile phone and laptop remain with the FIA, which had led to his judicial remand.

The court asked the CTD to justify the need for a physical remand. The prosecutor stated they needed to investigate the names of those who supplied explosive materials and apprehend them.

Subsequently, the court granted a two-day physical remand of Raoof Hasan to the CTD.

PTI’s Raoof Hasan released from Adiala Jail after bail in terror case

PTI spokesperson Raoof Hasan was released from Adiala Jail on Tuesday night after an anti-terrorism court granted him bail in connection with a case pertaining to alleged recovery of explosives.

PTI lawyer and spokesperson Naeem Haider Panjutha announced the development on social media platform X.

Footage of Hasan’s release also did the rounds on social media and showed him walking away before leaving in a vehicle.

Hasan was arrested on July 22 in a case registered by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act 2016 (Peca).

His arrest had come the same day as the interior ministry claimed the PTI was involved in “anti-state propaganda”. The government then formed a joint investigation committee (JIT) last week to probe those creating “chaos and disorder” in the country through “malicious social media campaigns”.

In the social media case, Hasan was remanded into the FIA’s custody for a total of seven days — an initial two-day physical remand, followed by a three-day and a two-day extension for further investigation.

After being sent on a 14-day judicial remand, Hasan was reportedly shifted to Adiala Jail on July 31 but was arrested in a terrorism case the same day, according to The News.

His arrest was made in a case pertaining to the alleged possession of weapons and explosives, which did not name him directly but was the same in which PTI’s international media coordinator Ahmed Janjua had been taken into custody.

While an Islamabad court granted Hasan and eight others bail in the social media case on August 1, he had already been handed over to the Counter-Terrorism Department on a two-day physical remand on July 31.

The remand was extended by a day on August 2, following which the PTI leader was produced before an Islamabad ATC on Saturday which sent him on a 14-day judicial remand.

ATC Judge Tahir Abbas Sipra presided over a hearing on Hasan’s bail plea today and granted the request, setting release against furnishing surety bonds at Rs200,000.

“It is further observed that the accused/petitioner is an old age person of 75 years and he is facing severe illness. He is a cardiac patient as well as a cancer survivor. He is well-educated person having no previous criminal record. The investigation has already been completed and the person of the accused is no more required by the prosecution for any purpose. In view of that instant post-arrest bail stands accepted,” the order said.

Regarding the case, the judge noted that despite Hasan’s physical remand, nothing was recovered from him and no material or evidence was collected and placed on the record to establish his link with the alleged provision of finances for the explosives.

“There is no direct or indirect evidence available to connect the present accused/petitioner with the abetment of the offence attributed.”

Hasan’s robkar (release order) was later issued by the court.

‘Missing’ PTI MNA Haji Imtiaz ‘rearrested’ from Multan Airport

Punjab’s anti-corruption watchdog on Thursday claimed to have rearrested “missing” PTI MNA, Haji Imtiaz Ahmed, from Multan airport.

In a statement, an Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) spokesperson said the lawmaker was trying to board a flight for Qatar when he was arrested at the Multan airport.

The whereabouts of the lawmaker had been unknown since armed men attacked a convoy on the new Shadiwal Road near Gujranwala and freed him from ACE’s custody on July 31.

The ACE arrested him for allegedly receiving a Rs2 million commission in a development scheme.

A team of the anti-corruption watchdog was bringing him back to Gujranwala from Mianwali — where he was taken for the recovery of the commission money — when around a dozen armed men in three vehicles intercepted the official vehicle and opened indiscriminate fire. The ACE officials left the vehicle to find shelter as the armed men took away the MNA.

After the “kidnapping” of their party members, PTI lawmakers raised the matter in the parliament and also moved the court for his safe recovery.

In a recent session of the National Assembly, Leader of the Opposition Omar Ayub Khan said Mr Ahmed had been declared “a forcefully disappeared person”.

While addressing the speaker, Mr Khan asked: “Who is torturing him, intelligence agencies or anybody else? The responsibility lies on you, Mr Speaker, as custodian of the house”.

In reply, the speaker, Ayaz Sadiq, told PTI lawmakers that he had been told by the police that Mr Ahmed was neither in their or ACE’s custody.

On the occasion, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had also assured the opposition members that he would personally look into the alleged disappearance of Mr Ahmed.

Mr Ahmed had been elected as an independent candidate (backed by the PTI) in the general elections held on February 8. Earlier, he had been elected as an MNA for the first time in 2018 on PTI’s ticket.

Bailable warrants for PTI activist Sanam Javed issued for skipping hearing in Lahore

An anti-terrorism court on Saturday issued bailable arrest warrants for Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf social media activist Sanam Javed for skipping the hearing of a May 9 case against her.

ATC Judge Khalid Arshad conducted a jail trial of the Shadman police station attack case against different leaders and workers of the PTI. Sanam and former MNA Rubina Jamil, who have been released on bail, did not appear before the court in jail.

The judge issued bailable arrest warrants for both women, however, withdrew the warrants for Ms Jamil after she appeared before the court.

Separately, the judge dismissed pre-arrest bail petitions of PTI MPAs Hafiz Farhat Abbas and Imtiaz Mahmood Sheikh for non-prosecution in two cases of the May 9 riots.

The lawyers for the MPAs requested a one-time exemption from personal appearance. However, the judge turned down the request, noting that the bail of both petitioners had also been rejected in three other cases a few days ago.

The judge dismissed the bail petitions of both MPAs in the Askari Tower attack and burning police vehicles outside Zaman Park.

Remand

ATC Judge Khalid Arshad on Saturday granted a five-day physical remand of PTI leader Amjad Sohail Khan Niazi in the Jinnah House attack case.

Sarwar Road police produced Niazi before the court and sought his physical remand for investigation.

PTI's Aliya Hamza files protective bail plea in Islamabad High Court

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Aliya Hamza has submitted a protective bail application in the Islamabad High Court (IHC) concerning cases registered in Faisalabad and Sargodha.

The PTI leader, represented by lawyers Khakan Mir and Ishtiaq A. Khan, filed the application requesting an urgent hearing.

Yesterday, an anti-terrorism court in Gujranwala acquitted Hamza in a case related to the May 9 incidents. Neither Aliya nor her legal team appeared before the court.

On August 7, Aliya was released from Gujranwala Jail after her release orders were submitted earlier.

Aliya was accused of plotting attacks on sensitive installations on 9th May in Cantt area Gujranwala. She was arrested by Gujranwala police after her release from Sargodha jail.

LHC had ordered law enforcement agencies not to arrest Aliyah Hamza, in any new cases without the court's permission until August 29.

LHC's Justice Ali Baqar Najafi issued the ruling while hearing a petition filed by Hamza Jameel, Aliya Hamza's husband, who sought protective bail to prevent further arrests in cases she was unaware of.

"No agency will arrest Aliya Hamza without permission of the Lahore High Court," Justice Najafi declared.

The court also requested a report from the Attorney General of Pakistan (AGP) Mansoor Awan by the next hearing date, detailing any First Information Reports (FIRs) filed against Aliya.

On June 7, Gujranwala police arrested Aliya Hamza when she came out of the Sargodha jail after getting bail in three cases registered by Mianwali police.

She had been confined to Sargodha jail since April 2, 2024, as she was framed in four cases registered with Kamar Mushani Police Station in connection with May 9 violence by PTI workers.

Aliya was not nominated at the time of registration of the FIR.

As per details, the suspect was arrested from the spot where explosives were recovered earlier in the day. The investigation from the arrested was underway, while the security has been beefed up.

A hand grenade, rocket launcher, detonators, and other explosive material were discovered at the site of a Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) rally in the Sangjani area of Islamabad today. The bomb disposal squad successfully deactivated the explosive devices.

The PTI aims to demonstrate its political strength through the rally in Islamabad today. The party’s leadership has already visited the venue, and preparations are complete.

The district administration had granted conditional approval to PTI rally, stipulating that it would run from 4 pm to 7 pm, with no disruption to business or public movement.

Meanwhile, all entry and exit points to the Red Zone in Islamabad have been sealed off using containers. Only authorized individuals will be allowed entry through the Margalla Road.

Containers have been placed at the Sangjani area, blocking the GT Road in both directions. The motorway’s entry point to Islamabad at the 26th toll plaza has also been closed.

Imran Khan’s party chief Gohar released as NA speaker orders probe into arrests

An anti-terrorism court released PTI Chairman Gohar Ali Khan on Monday, however, the same court sent five party leaders to jail on remand after they were whisked away from Parliament the other day.

“September 10, 2024, will be considered a ‘black day’ for Pakistan’s democracy and none of us will ever forget it,” Gohar told reporters after his release in Islamabad.

He was among half a dozen party lawmakers who were dragged from the Parliament House on Monday night by the Islamabad Police following the party rally in the federal capital’s Sangjani.

Imran Khan’s party lawmakers demanded the former prime minister’s release in a rally attended by hundreds of party supporters. They slammed the incumbent government for the PTI chief’s incarceration and reiterated that their “mandate was stolen” on February 8.

But the federal capital’s administration was not satisfied with the rally as it issued notifications after the PTI did not end the public gathering event at 7pm—a time decided by both sides. Clashes were also reported between the police and supporters of PTI as the former warned the latter against adhering to the designated route.

The inspector general of police had promised action after the rally, which ended three hours later than the timeline set by the district administration.

ATC approves eight-day physical remand of PTI leaders

An Anti-Terrorism Court on Tuesday approved an eight-day physical remand of PTI leaders who were arrested yesterday outside the parliament.

The detained leaders include Sher Afzal Marwat, Aamir Dogar, Zain Qureshi, Naseem Shah, Ahmed Chattha, and others in connection with the Sangjani police station case.

It merits mention the court rejected physical remand request for Shoaib Shaheen and he was sent to judicial custody.

Sources say Islamabad police presented Shoaib Shaheen and other arrested workers, charged under terrorism provisions, before Judge Abul Hasnaat Zulqarnain of the ATC today.

The speaker and the mafia pretending that they have some power, whilst they have sold their soul to become puppets for money

There are only two problems in Pakistan:
  1. Unchecked Power of COAS (Chief of Army Staff)
  2. No checks and balances on the unrestrained execution of orders (official and unofficial) by Military, Intelligence, Paramilitary and Police personnel
2 is the Tool by which 1 rules the country.

Unless these issues are resolved, Pakistan is not going anywhere and everything else is smoke and mirrors

PHC grants protective bail to PTI leaders

The Peshawar High Court on Wednesday granted protective bail to leader of the opposition in the National Assembly Omar Ayub Khan and MNAs Asad Qaiser, Zartaj Gul and Faisal Amin Khan until Oct 10 in a case recently registered against scores of the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) leaders for allegedly violating standard operating procedures of a public meeting in Islamabad.

Justice Shakeel Ahmad of a single-member bench accepted separate petitions of the four lawmakers, directing them to appear before the relevant court in Islamabad by Oct 10.

Mohsin Farooq, Alam Khan Adenzai, Shahab Shah, Arshad Khan and other lawyers appeared for the petitioners and claimed that the federal government had registered a fabricated case against several PTI leaders, including petitioners, on political grounds.

They added that the FIR was registered by Islamabad’s Sangjani police on Sept 9 under different provisions of the Pakistan Penal Code, Anti-Terrorism Act, and the recently-enacted Peaceful Assembly and Public Order Act, 2024.

The counsel said that the petitioners were MNAs and law-abiding citizens.

They added that the petitioner wanted to approach the relevant court in Islamabad but they feared their arrest on their way to the court.

The lawyers said that Mr Omar Ayub was the leader of the opposition and had also served as a federal minister, while Asad Qaiser was a former National assembly speaker and Zartaj Gul a former federal minister.

Meanwhile, a bench consisting of Chief Justice Ishtiaq Ibrahim and Justice Wiqar Ahmad granted protective bail to Omer Ayub, Asad Qaiser and Faisal Amin and stopped federal law-enforcement agencies from arresting those PTI leaders in any case until Oct 7.

The three petitioners sought the court’s orders for law-enforcement agencies to learn about the cases registered against them.

The bench directed the federal government to file response to the petitions of those lawmakers until Oct 3. The counsel requested the bench to order LEAs not to arrest their clients until further orders.

However, the bench wondered how such an order could be issued to the agencies functioning in other provinces.

The chief justice observed that the court could issue directives to a federal LEA but not any agency functioning in other provinces.

The lawyers requested the bench to grant protective bails to the petitioners to enable them to appear before the relevant courts.

The bench observed that it would seek details from the federal government about cases against the petitioners, but as far as the cases registered in other provinces were concerned, the petitioners should approach the relevant high courts.

Mr Ayub said scores of cases were registered against him in Punjab.

The bench observed that it couldn’t overstep its jurisdiction and could only issue directives to the federal agencies.

‘PARLIAMENT ATTACK’ FLAYED: Mr Ayub later told reporters that Sept 9 was the darkest day in the history of the country when unidentified masked men attacked parliament and took away lawmakers.

He said the federal government and establishment were responsible for that incident.

The PTI leader saidthe federal government tried its best to prevent Islamabad’s public meeting on Sept 8 and created hurdles to participants.

Accompanied by Asad Qaiser, he said the PTI condemned the arrest of lawmakers and hoped Speaker of the National Assembly Ayaz Sadiq would act against culpable officials.

He, however, said the PTI lawmakers had grievances against the speaker for not acting against the perpetrators of that illegal act. He also demanded fresh elections in the country.

Mr Qaiser said the PTI leaders approached the high court for transit bail to ensure they attend the assembly session and play their due role in thwarting the tabling of a government bill to benefitting an individual.

He claimed that currently, there was no “constitutional government” in the country.

The PTI leader questioned whether public meetings of other political parties were also held under SOPs. He said a case was unfairly registered against PTI leaders for violating SOPs.

“The MNAs elected with PTI’s support won’t support the government in the house,” he said.

Imran Khan claims 'establishment' responsible for Ali Amin Gandapur's alleged disappearance

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founding leader Imran Khan has alleged that the establishment is responsible for the disappearance of Ali Amin Gandapur adding that the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister has remained silent out of loyalty and respect for the establishment.

Speaking informally to journalists at Adiala Jail on Friday, Imran further claimed that the current situation in the country is reminiscent of "Yahya Khan Part II," accusing the establishment of undermining the country's institutions.

He stated that public trust in the police and lower judiciary has diminished, citing an alleged incident of a judge taking 'three hours of instructions before ruling against Bushra Bibi.'

The PTI chairman welcomed Maulana Fazlur Rehman's statement against extending tenures for military and judicial officials, expressing relief that the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) chief does not support such extensions.

He also criticised Nawaz Sharif for what he said was an attack on the judiciary carried out by allegedly offering extensions. Imran specifically targeted Supreme Court Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa over the extension issue.

Imran said that Pakistan's lack of foreign investment compared to countries like Singapore, where $140 billion has been invested, is due to the absence of rule of law in Pakistan.

He claimed that overseas Pakistanis are key to the country's future, adding that the country can only gain independence from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) when they start investing in Pakistan.

He also reiterated his claim that Gandapur was disappeared by elements within the establishment, further alleging that everyone knows who is responsible for such actions in the country.

Imran also spoke on the current state of governance, claiming that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif required approval for every decision and could soon face a similar fate of disappearance.

Khan expressed frustration over the delay in the progress on the Toshakhana case, stating that despite submitting multiple requests for an expedited hearing, the Supreme Court has yet to schedule it.

He compared this to the prompt scheduling of cases by the Election Commission, accusing the Chief Election Commissioner of colluding with certain judges to target PTI.

The wife of PTI leader Zain Qureshi returned home safely on Thursday after being reportedly abducted by masked men.
The news was confirmed by Zain Qureshi’s sister, Mahnam Kabir, who took to social media to announce her sister-in-law’s safe arrival. PTI leader Mehrbanu Qureshi also shared a photo of her sister-in-law, reinforcing the news of her safe return.

ATC grants bail to Imran’s sisters Uzma, Aleema in D-Chowk protest case

The Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) Islamabad on Friday granted bail to PTI founder Imran Khan’s sisters, Aleema Khan and Uzma Khanum, following their detention during a protest in the capital amid Section 144 restrictions.

Earlier this month, hundreds of PTI activists, including senior leaders and the two sisters, had gathered at multiple locations in the capital, defying heavy police blockades and road closures, while authorities dug trenches and placed iron nails on a stretch of the Islamabad-Peshawar motorway to prevent protesters from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa from reaching the capital.

Despite the placing of hundreds of containers to secure entry points and key areas across the capital and the imposition of Section 144, demonstrators managed to converge at various sites, including the edge of the high-security Red Zone, at D-Chowk.

Section 144 is a legal provision that restricts gatherings of four or more people in an area to prevent public disorder or unrest.

Police rounded up over 100 PTI members, including Imran’s two sisters for allegedly instigating unrest and causing damage to public property.

Violent clashes between protesters and law enforcement officials were reported throughout the day, with several instances of stone-pelting and tear gas shelling being witnessed.

Following the incident, a case was registered against Aleema and Uzma under terrorism provisions in connection with D-Chowk violence by Kohsar police.

ATC Judge Tahir Abbas Sipra had granted a one-day physical remand of the two sisters a day ago after they were taken into police custody.

Both sisters appeared before the court today after the completion of their physical remand. On October 10, the Islamabad ATC extended the duo’s physical remand for two more days.

Niazullah Niazi, Ansar Mahmood Kiyani and other lawyers appeared in court on behalf of Uzma and Aleema.

Prosecutor Raja Naveed opposed the bail plea, saying a megaphone was recovered from the suspects, who used it to incite chaos among the party workers. “There is a video of the suspects when they were arrested.”

Niazi retorted and questioned the prosecutor’s statement on the sisters inciting chaos.

“There is not a single video of them inciting chaos, they are just being made a target for political revenge,” Kayani said.

After hearing the arguments, the court granted bail to the two sisters for Rs20,000 each.

PTI confirmed the bail approval in a post on X, quoting leader Zartaj Gul as saying: “Alhamdulillah, Khan sahib’s two sisters have been granted bail, God willing my leader Imran will also be released.”

A case has also been registered at the Aabpara police station against the duo, but terrorism provisions are not included in this case. Bail has not been granted in the case, which was registered for alleged interference in the administration and other provisions.

Imaan Mazari, husband’s detention in terrorism case violation of rights to due process: Amnesty

Amnesty International on Wednesday said the recent “arrest and continued detention” of lawyers Imaan Zainab Mazari-Hazir and her husband Hadi Ali in a terrorism case was a “violation of their rights to due process”.

The couple was arrested on Monday by the Islamabad police for allegedly “creating a security risk” during the England cricket team’s visit by removing road barriers.

A video, shared on social media on October 25, purportedly showed Imaan and Ali moving road barriers to clear the path for traffic.

A day ago, it emerged that a case under terrorism charges had been filed against them. Subsequently, they were sent on a three-day physical remand.

In a statement posted on the X account of its South Asia regional office, Amnesty said: “The arrest and continued detention of human rights lawyers Imaan Zainab Mazari-Hazir and Hadi Ali under anti-terrorism laws is a violation of their rights to due process and yet another example of the abuse of the Anti-Terrorism Act.”

It highlighted that the charges of terrorism were “not commensurate with any offences the lawyers are alleged to have committed”.

While the police statement had mentioned “interference in state duties” — an offence charged under Section 186 of the Pakistan Penal Code — the first information report (FIR) against the couple also invoked Section 7 (punishment for acts of terrorism) of the ATA.

“Such action by the authorities is excessive, disproportionate and in violation of Pakistan’s obligations under international law,” Amnesty said.

It went on to claim that Imaan and Ali were detained on October 28 but informed of the charges 24 hours after their arrest.

Imaan was also “previously arrested and charged for her participation and speech” at a rally by the Pashtun Tahaffuz Movement in August 2023, the statement noted.

The organisation called for the “disproportionate charges, particularly related to terrorism”, to be dropped immediately. It further asserted that the “authorities must ensure their right to a fair trial under international human rights law, including unrestricted access to legal counsel”.

Previously, the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) had condemned the couple’s arrest, saying it was made on “vague charges”.

“Both are committed, well-respected human rights defenders, whose arbitrary arrest is symptomatic of the rapidly shrinking space for activists in Pakistan,” it had said.

ATC grants Imaan Mazari, husband bail as IHC strikes down physical remand in ‘terrorism’ case

The Islamabad Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) granted bail to human rights lawyer Imaan Zainab Mazari-Hazir and her husband Hadi Ali on a bail bond of Rs20,000, it emerged on Thursday.

The couple was arrested on Monday by the Islamabad police for allegedly “creating a security risk” during the England cricket team’s visit by removing road barriers.

A video, shared on social media on October 25, purportedly showed Imaan and Ali moving road barriers to clear the path for traffic.

Earlier today, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) struck down the three-day physical remand handed down by ATC on Tuesday. It also ordered the duo to be sent to jail on a 14-day judicial remand.

On Wednesday, human rights organisation Amnesty International said the duo’s “arrest and continued detention” was a “violation of their rights to due process”.

It highlighted that the charges of terrorism were “not commensurate with any offences the lawyers are alleged to have committed.

“Such action by the authorities is excessive, disproportionate and in violation of Pakistan’s obligations under international law,” Amnesty said.

Weapons were seized in large numbers from arrested protesters, emphasizing the gravity of the situation.

Have never been utterly depressed and dissapointed at the state of affairs in the country. All this is happening because the Establishment, PDM are demanding that IK, PTI will not come after them for everything that has occurred in the last 2-3 years and IK is refusing to give any amnesty, NRO this time.

Other compromised PTI leaders have promised this amnesty, NRO but even the establishment knows that these leaders have zero aukaat, value among the masses and that their popularity is a result of IK's sponsorship and if IK is removed from the scene as a whole then no matter how much they support, sponsor these leaders, PTI the party collapses to zero and cannot be used as a third option against PML-N and PPP.

The former MNA was arrested during a raid at his house in Block 7 of the Gulshan-e-Iqbal area of Karachi.

The police party with more than a dozen policemen reached the residence of the ‘Fixit’ founder while women police constables also accompanied them.

Islamabad ATC sends 146 PTI workers on judicial remand

The Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) on Tuesday sent 146 PTI workers, including a 14-year-old teenager, on judicial remand following the expiration of their physical remand.

The individuals were arrested in connection with PTI’s D-Chowk protest.

On Tuesday, the prosecution requested ATC Judge Tahir Abbas Sipra an additional 20-day physical remand of the accused, but the defence lawyer strongly opposed the plea, particularly highlighting the case of the 14-year-old teenager.

The defence counsel argued that the adolescent, who had recently arrived in Pakistan for medical treatment with his widowed mother, was wrongfully implicated in the case.

The court was informed that no incriminating evidence or items were recovered from the youngster.

Judge Sipra inquired about evidence linking the teenager to the protests and expressed concerns over police handling of the case, noting that the accusations appeared to lack physical corroboration.

Ultimately, the court rejected the prosecution’s plea for extended physical remand and ordered that all 146 individuals be sent to judicial custody.

In a separate case, the ATC extended the identification parade of 54 PTI workers arrested in connection with a case filed with Khanna police station.

The police had requested an additional three days for the identification process, but Judge Sipra granted only a two-day extension, emphasising the high court’s directive that identification parades be completed within three days.

The judge instructed that the suspects be produced before the court after the revised timeline, underlining the importance of timely judicial procedures.

Interim bail granted to Omer Ayub

Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Omar Ayub secured interim bail in five separate cases related to protests.

The additional district and sessions court in Islamabad granted bail in cases registered with Bhara Kahu, Koral and Aabpara police stations.

Judge Raja Asif Mahmood approved Ayub’s bail in three cases with bonds set at Rs10,000 each, while Judge Mohammad Afzal Majuka granted bail in another case with a bond of Rs5,000. The courts have directed the police to present case records by December 21.
