So the end of the Younis Khan era (pre-mature but expected) so where do we go from here?

Who in your view will be the best candidate as batting coach for the national side?

Won’t happen but I wish we could have one of the srilankans — sanga or mahela — in this role.

One and only Misbah who is PCB's most precious person, got national team's 3 top positions without any experience, skill and qualification to meet PCB's job advertisement criteria.

Sanga and Mahela are both coaches of IPL teams, so it is impossible.

If we can get Mo Yousuf, that will be good.

Sangakkara is a commentator and not into coaching.

I hear New Zealand's John Wright is available?

Wish I could say Saeed Anwar but for now maybe Yousaf and if he could still do it then Javed Miandad. No need for foreign coaches unless they speak Urdu.

All our local coaches come with baggage, but if we must hire someone from Pakistan, then Yousuf is the only guy who knows what he is talking about.

Will Muhammad Yousuf be ready to work under Misbah-Ul-Haq?

He's been vocal against Misbah in the recent past.

It'll be interesting if he shares dressing room with him now. :moyo2

He’s been doing fine with him so far. The primary challenges will be the same: extent of help he can provide in the off season (coaching during a tour is practically non-existent) and whether he’s happy coaching the pool of players provided or if he feels there should be others in that.

John Wright is too old to take a national cricket coach postion... He is 65+

India had them during his prime time as coach and Ganguly's favorites.. With him in place Ganguly was able to transform the Indian team from zeros to heros during the early 2000s..

Mahela has proven to be of great presence during his years with Mumbai Indians. If PCB can get him on board i am 100% sure he is someone who can make a huge difference.

During his playing career also, Mahela was one of the most tactically astute Sri Lankans. For personal bias, i always regarded him ahead of Sangakkara even.

Sangakkara cannot work woith Pakistani culture. He is egoistic and he will hurt way too many people's ego on his first day of the job.

No one from Pakistan, all of them has some ego issues , they don;t know how to give respect to a junior and be respected. Professionalism is not in Pakistani culture. Kudos to Wasim Khan for putting up with them for so long.

Agree. Mahela is the right choice. Calmer and he tactically astute. Can turn things around.
But he will have to leave Mumbai Indians for that.
But if money is good and he looking for a challenge, A Pakistan coach job can be very satisfying if you make the team win matches. lot of passionate fans.

Yousaf is quite humble so he'd be ideal.

:sa

2 t20 world cups are coming back to back. No better mentor for t20 style batting. :afridi

yousuf i think is next in line, all well and good talking about jayawardene , sanga , andy flower etc, but they would all be taking demotions in accepting pak batting coach job lets be honest, even as head coach it would be difficult to attract those kind of names currently.

Right.. Hmm lets see who comes in then. Yousuf then i guess.

I'll take Yousaf easy, easier to work with i guess in the way Yousaf speaks along with his mannerisms. Besides i think the guys batted a lot more aggressively with his coaching method.

yeah he is technically more sound and has more nuances in his batting. Can teach young batters some good things.

I think Mohammad Yousuf should be kept as far away from Misbah as possible. Regardless of what Yousuf may say since he now has to work with Misbah, I don't believe for a second that he feels any less animosity towards Misbah than he did previously. There is a potential for things to get volatile and if such a thing happens than you end up losing Yousuf completely. Besides, Yousuf is doing well as a coach at the NHPC.

Most of the other choices here seem too big for the job of batting coach i.e. Flower, Sangakkara, John Wright. I doubt Mahela would want to leave his cushy job for RR. And Inzamam's ego might be too big to work with Misbah.

Ease way out , get rid of Misbah then.. He is doing nothing as a head coach.. Not fully qualified to be a player, captain , selector , coach and what else..

PCB seems confident in Misbah and seems content with giving him the long-rope, which is why I don't realistically see that happening. Especially so close to the T20 World Cup.

Yousuf is doing a fine job at NHPC so I would personally be reluctant to change him from there. Also not sure about Yousuf’s professional relationship with Misbah.

Would prefer someone with past experience atleast at junior and domestic level if he is to be a local appointment. Surely not many names but, it doesnt really have to be a big name.

Many successful coaches around the world have shown that you dont have to be a big name to do the job as coaching requires a completely different skillset. Be it Mike Hessen, Gary Stead or Indian bowling coach Bharat Arun, none were of them was any big cricketing names but, their work speaks for them and they came to national setup with experience at domestic level.

Today if Islu wins then local head coaches have not qualified for the finals.

Multan Sultans nobody counted them to be even contending for the playoffs but now they are in the final shows how much a coach and captain can help a team to put out the odds and rise high up.

Afghanistan got Lance Klusener as head coach but Pakistan could only manage to get Misbah and are reeling under with him for 3 year contract :yk..

And Waqar who was a TTF in coaching role, some how creeps in again and again..

Most of these batsmen coming on the scene don’t know where their off stump is, have no footwork, don’t know how to play with a straight bat, have a limited set of strokes , are regularly mistiming the ball, know nothing about placement , clueless on how to handle different kinds of bowling such as pace, bounce, inswing, outswing, — in fact would it be harsh to say they don’t know the ABC basics of batting ?

What kind of batting coach can help such hopeless batsmen at the international level.

The problem is clearly lack or incompetent coaching being done at grassroots level.

Does Yousuf carry a grudge against Misbah just because some selector (rightly) picked Misbah ahead of him in the 2007 World T20?

That is so lame.

Plus Most of our young batsmen are duds against quality spin.

Obviously Pakistan’s selectors have limited options given the mediocre batting ‘talent’ (if I’m allowed to use that word) available - but in reality hiring a batting coach to teach these kids the basics of batting while playing international cricket … as an analogy , it’s like primary school children being asked to study for a pHD in an advanced area of mathematics , while hiring a secondary school mathematics teacher to show them how to do quadratic equations and trigonometry to get them ready.

Mohammed Yousuf will be a very good choice. I think Pakistan should look for local coaches.

Amongst foreigners, they can target Lance Klusener, he was a destructive batsman and has international experience of coaching smaller teams like Zimbabwe and Afghanistan. Zulu could be an option.

The batting coach should not be changing techniques of players at this level. However, what they should really be doing is helping the coaching staff identify batsmen with a really good technique ideally with minor deficiencies. These minor aspects can be worked on in the nets and perfected in matches. Any other players with glaring issues, should be sent back to the domestics with a "report card" detailing what aspects of their technique needs to be worked on. Their domestic sides should then help improve that area. The batsmen sent back should not be considered for the side until and unless they can show progress in domestic matches that indicate their deficiencies have been eliminated.

Our coaching staff is expected to "teach" people the art of batting in the national team, which is wrong.

I agree with top part of your posts. They should be there mostly to tweak and suggest corrections in their technique mainly concerning the grounds and opposition bowlers and International batsmen help as they know these grounds and conditions.

I am not sure if there was or if there is still some grudge or not but, the you never know. However, its a fact that like quite a few ex players he was pretty vocal about Misbah in his playing days. So their professional relation will have to be looked at before any such appointment in my opinion if he is being considered to start with.

What difference is a batting coach going to make? Our Batsmen have always been hit and miss regardless. Mickey Arthur-Misbah ul Haq made no difference to Babar Azam's consistency.

Mohammad Rizwan didnt improve under Misbah/Younis Khan, he was simply given a long rope and confidence that he will not be dropped. Thus allowing him to find himself at the top of the order in T20s and in the middle order in Tests.

Andy Flower - think more of a coach for the team but could well be started off as batting coach too.

Jayawardhane should be made batting coach , he is young and has played modern game. Also , was a good tactically .

Michael Di Venuto, Ian Bell, Peter Fulton, Owais Shah all are good options.

Owais Shah seems to be the one who can fit in.

I wonder if Andy Flower would be prepared to work under Misbah?

Whats the point of a batting coach if there is no time on tour to fix technical things? The Job Title and Description should be changed to Batting consultant

I am starting to wonder given the issues with YK - whether this position is actually needed?

Misbah as far as I remember knew a thing or two about batting too, and if he was previously happy to be Chief Selector and Head coach together - I’m sure it won’t add too much to his workload if he now becomes Head coach with responsibility for coaching batsmen also.. why introduce someone else in the team management who will only feel insecure about Misbah or Yusuf getting involved !?

Fire Misbah, and combine YK and Misbah’s salary to rope in Michael Vaughan.

He probably won’t come to Pak so he should do training camps in Dubai on once a month basis and may travel with the team in abroad tours.

We ABSOLUTELY don’t need a head coach no matter who he is. This is an absolutely useless position with no great benefits but wasting a lot of money for sure.

Both bowling and batting coaches should be hired as short term contractors and should directly report to PCB or whatever that 3 member cricket committee they have at PCB.

No need to waste money on a full time head coach position and two full time additional coaches for bowling and batting. It’s an overkill with little to no benefit.

If not, get a good batting coach from Indian Ranjhi trophy circle. He will surely fix a thing or two in our batting.
However, he will probably sign his own death certificate if he takes a job in Pakistan. The BJP/RSS goons won’t let him or his family live in peace in India.

Or another idea , instead of coaches , PCB should ensure for Pakistan matches the broadcasters hire commentators out of the likes of Ian Chappel, Mark Taylor, Shane Warne, Nasser Hussain, Michael Holding , Sunil Gavaskar.

Forget your mediocre local coaches , these respected commentators through their analysis on TV replays , will give you all the feedback and coaching tips Pakistani players need. The rest is up to the players to take that feedback on board and apply it , and the best part is if players were serious about improvement they could even privately reach out to these legends on the side and ask for their tips and practical demo.

I am telling you, that’s not a bad idea at all.

With this army of coaches, we are simply wasting a lot of money in trying to bring “water to the horse” instead of taking the horse to the water.

Short term reconditioning camps and tips from the greats of the game, is more than enough for anyone who really wants to improve.

“Where there is a will there is way.”

But from the way things work at PCB, I won’t be surprised if Muhammad Hafeez becomes our next batting coach.
