After quite an eventful final day and session, the first Test has been drawn.

Pakistan are still without a win at home in their last 7 Tests.

Can they turn that around in this game to win the series? What changes should they make? What type of pitch should be prepared?

Discuss and vote.

Sarfaraz's position as a batter cannot be touched - the big question mark is about the keeping.

Else Hassan for Wasim Jr could be a change?

PAK need to think out of the box as they need to take 20 wickets to win the match

I would gamble on Yasir Shah he can’t do any worse than chaacha

Need bowling friendly conditions.not the flat tracks where you get outscored by opposition by 200 runs.

Unless the ultimate goal is to secure a draw not win.

Ghulam in for Shan.

Hasan in for Wasim Jnr

Also a better wicket then teh pancake produced for the 1st test.

I'd get rid of shan and bring in ghulam

Wasim jnr replaced by dahani

Rest abrar for zahid mehmood

Get rid of nauman for sajid .

Abrar needs a rest before he is crippled he's bowled way too many overs .

If the pitches were inclusive for pace bowlers I would have played hasan ali as third pacer but they are not its a graveyard ,so zahid mehmood plays for me as second spinner.

So we got the moral victory by denying NZ amazing fingers crossed for a shared trophy expect wicket to be more docile

May as well use the same wicket for the 2nd test, it still looked flat on day 5.

No point using a fresh flat surface.

Hasan Ali for Wasim J
Kamran G for Shan M
Sajid for Nauman.
Knowing Babar Wasim will play instead of Hamza.

Play Hasan Ali and do not drop Sarfi. Play him as a batter.

Drop Shan, he should never ever play for Pak again.

---

NZ should have won the 1st test. I felt KW kinda played to statpad for the most useless 200* ever. Should have upped the run rate like England so masterfully did.

NZ won't make the same mistake again tho. Their spinners are eons ahead of Pakistan's.

--

Hopefully this will be the last game for Babar the test skipper.

The question is how do curators make a pitch in 2 days...

they dont, there is always a strip of pitches on the square that can be used, but if a new one is used it will be flat.

Better off using the same pitch, it may end break up pretty quickly and then more likely chance of a result.

Pakistan will go for draw nothing miraculous is going to happen mindset of some players is to get personal milestones.

Is that wise considering our players might get bundled out by nz spinners .

New Zealand win or draw. Pak don’t play to win, they play not to lose. And in the process lose or pull out a draw with some magic.

Really poor performance in tests this year, playing home like it’s away. The team and pitches are equally poor. Bowling line up is definitely amongst the worst I’ve ever seen for Pakistan.

Would you rather see another 5 day boring draw, because taking 20 NZ wickets on a road will be tough. Better off being brave on a worn pitch trying to win series 1-0.

Lose the toss, lose the match. We need wickets that are good cricket wickets, throwing the dice and hoping for the best isnt a good idea

Your either getting another road for 2nd test or a worn wicket. you aint getting a good cricket wicket in 2 days!

Pakistan Vs India test in Karachi 2006 was a great test match because they didn’t shave off the grass. I remember Inzi pulled out due to “injury” - more a protest I think and Pakistan went on to a legendary win with Younis khan leading brilliantly

Why can’t they just do the same with the Karachi pitch now?

The Karachi pitch was probably flatter than Rawalpindi pitch. On all 5 days just 5-6 wickets fell. It didn't deteriorate, didn't slow down much and if you don't want to get out, you will never get out.
Its a shame how Pakistan is scared to lose even against a mid table team in tests.

Pakistan will lose this series. They are mentally shot. It has looked like England and New Zealand are playing at home and we are touring.

Shan's position is in danger - Kamran Ghulam needs to be brought in.

Stand by....

The interim selection committee of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), led by Shahid Afridi, is likely to add three players to the men’s squad for the ongoing Test series against New Zealand.

According to sources, pacer Ihsanullah and batters Saim Ayub and Haseebullah Khan are likely to be inducted in the squad as part of the selection committee’s strategy and vision to develop, grow and incentivize high-performing talented youngsters.

Also this from Shahid Afridi:

“We want our cricket to move forward but the pitches we have played on won’t help us do that. Such pitches are not good for bowlers. We are trying to make a bouncy pitch for the second Test"

4 of NZ's top 7 batsmen are left handers yet we didn't play a specialist offspinner.

Not a Sajid Khan fan but our team management seemingly cannot be bothered to make any gameplans and exploit a possible opposition weakness.

From PCB:

To continue with their initiative of providing exposure and opportunities to learn from the best in the business to the high-performing and talented youngsters, the men’s selection committee has decided to attach Haseebullah, Saim Ayub and Ihsanullah with the Pakistan Test squad.

These players will replace Arafat Minhas, Basit Ali and Mohammad Zeeshan, who were with the Test squad for the first match that concluded yesterday.

1. Abdullah Shafique
2. Imam-ul-Haq
3. Babar Azam (C)
4. Saud Shakeel
5. Kamran Ghulam
6. Sarfaraz Ahmed (WK)
7. Mohammad Nawaz
8. Hasan Ali
9. Sajid Khan
10. Mir Hamza
11. Abrar Ahmed

Sajid Khan & Mohammad Nawaz over Agha Ali Salman & Nauman Ali due to Sajid Khan superiority over Salman over off spin & Nawaz offers control with the bowl as well as batting. Pakistan have to try to get 20 wickets which proved difficult in 2022, so identify the weakness of the opposition such as 4 LHB in the top 7 which means Sajid Khan would be a good option.

A tail starting at 7 :)) with our weak batting! Nawaz is a glorified tail ender with the bat and hes shown that in all tests hes played this year.

So will the pitch play any different?

FlX4I9eXwAEqeWT

Qadir Khawaja tweeted a picture of a pitch which looked different

Afridi visited the ground yesterday and has asked for more helpful pitch for bowlers. So let us see,Pakistan need to be more attaching and drop Nauman for an extra pacer. Salman needs to practise his bowling more to help out in the match, when and if spin bowling is threat.

As per reports:

According to the details, a vibrant pitch was prepared on the special instructions of the chief of the Men’s Interim National Selection Committee Shahid Afridi, who paid a visit to the National Cricket Bank Arena on Saturday when the pitch preparation was underway.

Meanwhile, a special curator named Ashraf came to Karachi from Rawalpindi for the task.

On Sunday, the New Zealand side held a full-strength training session at the venue and keenly assessed the revamped pitch ahead of the second Test, commencing tomorrow.

“It does look different from the first Test. A little bit more moisture in there at the moment” said New Zealand batting coach Luke Ronchi in a press talk after the practice session.

“I reckon both teams will be in the same position where they’ll wait to see what it’s exactly like in the morning,” he said.

That was a very good pitch actually. It offered something for the seamers with the new ball throughout the test and not just on day 1 as usually happens when you leave grass on the pitch in Pakistan.

To be honest we don't need to reinvent the wheel with pitches. We just need to do what we did for the South Africa series, which were excellent pitches. Nothing out of the ordinary. Just repeat that. Pitches have been Ramiz's biggest failure.

A draw last week having stopped a run of defeats for Pakistan and New Zealand, both sides will be seeking to go one better in the second and final test in Karachi starting Monday.

The tame draw halted Pakistan's four-test losing streak at home including their first-ever 3-0 whitewash by England.

New Zealand also arrived in Pakistan on the back of a 3-0 drubbing by England.

Pakistan skipper Babar Azam vowed his team will play "positive and aggressive cricket" after they finished 2022 without a test win at home.

"We need to take things session-by-session and day-by-day," he said.

"We're working on it. It's not that we need to play different cricket."

New Zealand were in a good position to win the first test on the final day with Pakistan on 77-2, needing 97 runs to avoid an innings defeat.

But Saud Shakeel, who scored 55 not out, and Mohammad Wasim with 43 averted the danger with a 71-run eighth wicket stand eating up time and overs to salvage a draw.

Pakistan declared on 311-8 but a target of 138 in 15 overs under fading light was tough for New Zealand, who finished on 59-1.

"We need to credit New Zealand with the way they played and dominated," said Azam, who finished the year as the highest scorer in tests with 1 184 in nine matches.

The National Stadium pitch helped slow bowlers as 23 of the 28 wickets in the first test went to the spinners.

At the same venue but on a different pitch, New Zealand will also look for a win after going without in their last five tests.

"It does look different from the first test... It has a bit more moisture," said batting coach Luke Ronchi on Sunday.

"The preparations are shorter than normal, obviously we had just a two-day turnaround.

"It's going to be a hard slog to get a result, you have to bat really well and need to take 20 wickets."

Pakistan will look to bring in pacer Naseem Shah or Hasan Ali, while New Zealand may consider Matt Henry in place of a spinner if they find the pitch suitable for pace.

TEAMS (from):

Pakistan: Babar Azam (captain), Abdullah Shafique, Abrar Ahmed, Hasan Ali, Imam-ul-Haq, Kamran Ghulam, Mohammad Nawaz, Mohammad Rizwan, Mohammad Wasim, Naseem Shah, Nauman Ali, Sarfaraz Ahmed, Agha Salman, Saud Shakeel, Shan Masood, Zahid Mahmood

New Zealand: Tim Southee (captain), Michael Bracewell, Tom Blundell, Devon Conway, Matt Henry, Tom Latham, Daryl Mitchell, Henry Nicholls, Ajaz Patel, Glenn Phillips, Ish Sodhi, Blair Tickner, Neil Wagner, Kane Williamson, Will Young

AFP

NZ need to get Glen Phillips in the side instead of Nichols

Phillips and Mitchell can take the game away from any opposition

I recon kiwis can bring in Matt Henry for Bracewell as well

Pakistan needs some conjuring to take 20 wickets, wicket might be slow and turn from late day 2, bold prediction one out of NZ trio to take a 10fer

Bouncy pitch will see game over in 3 days with Pakistan on the losing side.

We don't have the resources.

Kane Williamson heaps praise on Pakistan cricket team

New Zealand ace batter Kane Williamson admitted that the amount of talent Pakistan have been producing is astonishing, keeping in mind the hard-fought Test in Karachi. The stylish right-hander reckons regardless of the conditions, Pakistan will always provide a challenge.

Speaking to Geo Tv ahead of the second Test against Pakistan in Karachi, Williamson stated:

"They've always got so much talent and every time that I've played them over the years, there's always been some, perhaps new players that have come into the side and you're always just amazed."

"The quality and talent that they seem to keep producing in this country, we always know that, whatever side that's been put out, and whatever conditions are, it is always going to be a tough challenge. And we just try and sort of focus on our cricket and how we want to try and stick to our plans and adjust to the changing conditions."

The 32-year-old, who recently stepped down as Test captain, praised the pitch for the first game and felt the visitors must gauge the conditions well ahead of the second at the same venue. He continued:

"We had a fantastic match in the last game, and, all chances of results coming into the last day. It was a good surface, the bowlers had to work pretty hard and we saw a little bit of assistance for the spin coming late into the match. We'll have to assess conditions going into this next game.

"It looks perhaps a little bit different. What's important for us as a team is that we assess and try and stick to our plans."

Williamson returned to form in the first Test in Karachi, earning the Player of the Match award for his unbeaten 200 to propel the Kiwis to 612 in the first innings. It was also his first Test ton since January 2021.

"It's also enjoyable sort of switching between formats, and you keep sort of being challenged by that and keep trying to improve your game and evolve your game. At the same time, with the schedule of international cricket, it's pretty full on.

"So you know, it is important, I think, as players that you try and balance out your workload a little bit, so you try and stay nice and fresh."

Not for Bracewell as that will make them a batsman short, but Ajaz Patel can be dropped if the pitch will not be that much spin friendly. For Pakistan I hope they will drop Wasim J for Naseem and not Hamza, andI think Shan will be given one last chance, although I would replace him for Kamran G. Shan has no future in Tests.

NZ missed one key element which is express pace bowler that can be useful on these flat wickets.

Wasim Jr's batting saved Pakistan in the last test match. He can also bowl at 137-140 km/hr. Should Pakistan drop an extra non performing batsman?

Is Naseem Shah healthy? He played a match in the Pakistan cup to get up to speed.

If Pakistan will go into the match needing Wasim J batting they deserve to lose. Besides his batting effort was once a blue moon event, he normally plays silly shots and gets out fairly quickly. The matches he played he has been ineffective as a wicket taking or ecnomical bowler. The non performing batsmen Shan as I said can be replaced by Kamran. Shafiq has performed really well in near past so should be continued. Sajid should replace Nauman as well.

Shafique shall be replaced by Rizwan because batting wise both are failures but Rizwan can play as specialist keeper. Shafique is now technically exposed and deserves no place in team.

Pakistan cannot bear another series defeat, safety first approach should be adopted, If Shahid Afridi and PCB are he'll bent on making Pakistan competitive in Test Cricket then add more Red ball games in itinerary

Think it's best to let Naseem concentrate on his white ball career now. He had a stress fracture a few years ago and has already picked up a few injuries.

His record in Tests has been patchy to say the least anyway.

Rizwan will probably come in for Shan and maybe a spinner dropped for a seamer.

The dumb selections will continue.

If there is grass comes toss time I will be happy. I could care less if Southee runs through our lineup, just want to see something happen, anything please!

Everyone gets exposed and then they work on their weaknesses in their career. No way Shafique will get dropped. Sarfraz keeping was not to the mark, perhaps it was due to not playing high level competative cricket forlong time, and maybe he will improve, though he is not getting any younger and will be used in short stint till Rizwan picks up his form. I will not play Rizwan in the test just as yet and try Kamran Ghulam for Shan.

Let’s hope for the best

But oh well, some players will just dig their own graves

In my best opinion, after contemplating deeply. This is my playing XI:

1. Şan Mesut
2. İmam ul Hak (vc)
3. Abdüllah Şefik
4. Baber Azem
5. Mehmet Rizvan (wk)
6. Serfiraz Ahmet (c)
7. Kemran Gülam
8. Hasan Ali
9. Ebrar Ahmet
10. Numan Ali
11. Mir Hamza
12. Ağa Selman (sub)

This means we will have a very deep batting line up. We will have 7 proper batsman PLUS 2 all rounders! That means 9 good batters.

Hasan will be a good addition to fast bowling strength. Mir will stay in the XI to provide vital swing with good line and length.

The spinners keep doing what they are doing and keep picking up wickets.

Rizvan will come back into the team to provide batting support against pace. He will keep the wickets. Serfiraz will stay in the team and continue to play like a Lion and be the backbone of the Pakistan team.

Afridi meeting Babar a day before every Test now

Brilliant. Finally Babar and Saqlain being held accountable and they cannot do whatever they want!

Based on a certain cricket wanna be site, if this team gets elected, we might as well all pretend there is no Pak team playing a test this week:

Pakistan (expected): Imam-ul-Haq, Abdullah Shafique, Shan Masood, Babar Azam, Saud Shakeel, Sarfaraz Ahmed (wk), Salman Ali Agha, Hasan Ali, Mohammad Wasim, Mir Hamza, Abrar Ahmed

How selectors are planning on bowling NZ with this attack is anyone's guess!

Shan Masood must make room for Rizwan so that keeping blunders of the highly stupid level, made by Sarfraz, are not repeated; he made less runs with bat than what he cost us with just Williamson's two missed stumpings.

Drop Hamza for Dahani or keep Nauman in. I also know Saud bowls left arm spin, I wonder why he has not been tried yet?

New Zealand with the upper hand at the moment

Saw a video where Simon Doull is digging at Babar for these flat roads.

Wonder if NZ will dangle it in front of us or play safe. Doesn't look like there is any hope of a Pak win at the moment (bar a spectacular collapse)

We had a brilliant chance to skittle NZ out tonight but it looks like that won't happen. We had them 4 down in a brilliant spell of bowling, but missed so many chances to break the partnership. Blundell-Bracewell looking strong now and will give NZ an unassailable lead by close of play.

We will end up batting for a draw on Day 5 yet again.

Both teams are not interested in this test series, why they have played in first place

New Zealand will now be disappointed if they don’t win this one. 8 wickets in 90 overs on a Day 5 pitch should be gettable.

Saw a video where Simon Doull is digging at Babar for these flat roads.

It's funny.

"Does Babar ask for such flat tracks to improve his stats?" - Simon Doull

Coming back to topic. I think NZ has a slight edge right now. All it will take one Pakistani batsman to play big knock.

Wonder if NZ will dangle it in front of us or play safe. Doesn't look like there is any hope of a Pak win at the moment (bar a spectacular collapse)

NZ did dangle. Question is for Pakistan if they want to win.

Pakistan has 0 chance of winning. People are kidding themselves.

New Zealand has an 80% chance of winning. Only Imam & Saud stand between them & victory.

Babar has an 85% chance of bottling tomorrow. He has been a walking wicket in the fourth innings since the 196 vs Australia in Karachi.

If NZL wins , will be good for Pakistan cricket in the long run. If it takes an other test defeat to get rid of Babar the captain and the selectors , its worth it.

Babar/Saud or bust.

If the above two don't save Pakistan then I can't see too many of the others rescuing them tomorrow.

Babar is a minnow in the 4th innings sadly. Cannot expect Shakeel to score every innings he's due a failure. Unless Imam and Sarfraz perform a miracle, it's 1-0 NZ.
