Most valuable batsmen under pressure or in a crisis in order of merit.
1.Ian Chappell
2.Javed Miandad
3.Alan Border
4.Steve Waugh
5.Rahul Dravid
In a crisis Ian even overshadowed brother Greg and Viv Richards.Averaged 50.94 at one down scoring 4279 runs.Imran Khan ,Gary Sobers and Dennis Lillee rated Ian Chappell the best batsmen in a crisis. No player matched his grit with his team in the depths of despair. His 192 at the Oval in 1975 and 156 v West Indies at Perth in 1975-76 are testimony to this. Also in WSC gave some great performances ,even as an opener in West Indies.Michael Holding felt it was Ian's 449 runs rather than that of brother Greg's 702 that won the 1975-76 Frank Worrell trophy for Australia. His 60 n.o v England in an ODI at home in 1979-80 in a low scoring game and 42 out of a sub-150 score on bad wicket at Sydney in that same year were a testimony of his ability to battle it out .Significantly Gary Sobers rated him the best batsmen in 1978-79.
Javed Miandad resembled a soldier on battlefield being the greatest scourge in the eyes of opponents and psychologically demoralized the opposition bowlers.A master in keeping the scoreboard moving when the chips were down.Performed considerably better at home but morally even away harassed oponents like in England,Australia and West Indies.
Border was a virtual replica of Javed with great capacity to stick out their in the middle, but less agressive.Border was statistically better but still Miandad was the one who created more fear in opponents in the view of Viv Richards and Lillee.Border was the best batsmen overseas statistically .
Steve Waugh was master in manipulating the strike in any conditions ,against any bowling.Conquered bowling attacks in every part of the world be it in West Indies,sub-continent or England.
Rahul Dravid was simply the wall and in pressure situations overshadowed even Tendulkar or Lara.Exhibited supreme technical adjustments in adapting to conditions and played in exact accordance to the given situation.Demonstrated this in England in 2002 and 2011 and in Australia in 2003-04.
The likes of Lara,Tendulkar,Gavaskar,Viv Richards or Sobers were better batsmen overall with more class but when the chips were down the 5 batsmen I listed arguably stood out more.
