With the outstanding career renaissance of Karim Benzema, this question has recently incited a lot of debate on the topic.

Lewandowski was widely considered to be the best, with his Ballon d'Or snub angering many, but with the recent form of others around Europe the opinion on this has become more divided.


These are the main candidates and their stats so far this season:

For me it's Benzema.

He has hit 20+ league goals in each season since he turned 30 (the same season that Ronaldo left RM), and at the age of 34 he is having undoubtedly his best season ever.

25 goals and 11 assists in 28 league games this season, along with 12 goals in 9 UCL matches.

That includes a 17-minute hat-trick to stun PSG in the RO16, followed by 4 goals across 2 quarter-final legs against Chelsea. Just last night he scored a 92nd minute winner away to Sevilla to send Real Madrid 15 points clear at the top of La Liga.

For a man who played so long in the shadow of Ronaldo in his prime years, this late career renaissance at the age of 34 to be almost single-handedly leading his teams towards the biggest trophies is simply phenomenal.

Another record broken for Benzema:

Karim Benzema became Real Madrid's joint second-highest goalscorer of all time and Vinicius Junior scored a hat-trick as Real relegated Levante.

Benzema, 34, netted a first-half header from Vinicius' pass to match Raul's 323 goals, with only Cristiano Ronaldo (450) scoring more for the club.

Salah spends a lot of the match hugging the right hand touchline. If was a no.9 he would have scored near 40 goals in all comps by now.

Benzema is pure class, the best striker by far. Amazing with his head, great finisher short or long range and very intelligent.

Karim Benzema named Champions League player of the season

Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema has been named as the Champions League player of the season.

The France international, 34, won the competition for a fifth time as Real beat Liverpool 1-0 in the final.

He scored 15 goals in 12 Champions League games and is a leading contender to win this year's Ballon d'Or.

Benzema's team-mate Vinicius Jr, who scored the only goal in the final, has been selected as the tournament's young player of the season.

The 21-year-old scored four goals and made six assists in the 2021-22 campaign.

The pair are joined in the Champions League team of the season by Real midfielder Luka Modric and goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, who was man of the match in Paris.

Runners-up Liverpool also have four players included, with defenders Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk, Andy Robertson and midfielder Fabinho featuring.

The team of the season is completed by Paris St-Germain striker Kylian Mbappe, Manchester City's Kevin de Bruyne and Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger.
