Just saw plans for HSBC tower in Canary Wharf in London to be turned into a "vertical neighbourhood", imagined here if anyone interested. i personally find the idea of vertical cities dystopian, the idea that people would work from home most of the week and not need to leave their buildings is like closing yourself off in a self enforced prison.

the prevalence of generic medium and high density housing is generally visually depressing imo. i understand that market forces drive these things, but surely there is some space for visual flair, or am i wrong. anyone else interested in this kinda stuff?

imo the gherkin got it right, having been in that building, it seems airy and open on the inside, and visually interesting from the outside. what are your views of balancing the needs of a growing urban population with maintaining livability, and aesthetics?

Yes, I am very much interested in urban development.

In fact, my Master's degree was based on urban development, and now I am planning to pursue a PhD in Sustainable Development.

Actually, I want to introduce the concept of sustainable construction on a wider scale in Pakistan

nice, how much appetite is there for sustainability in Pakistan? i mean i havnt been there for long, but when i was there last, it looked like planning was virtually non-existant.

To be honest there is no appetite for sustainability here in Pakistan except installation of solar panels due to high rates of electricity.

Pakistan need to move towards sustainable construction habits and need to work on more green building concepts and create more greener urban areas because we are most vulnerable to climate crisis. which definitely need more than a campaign to educate people and need form environmental laws and enforce them.

Unfortunately due to rise of real estate development in Pakistan they are cutting down green towns ( forests and agricultural fields).

so how does that work out in the context of your career, is it not a big risk to put your eggs in that basket?

the irony is that as a formerly agrarian society, and urban dwellers with strong contacts to their villages, most people have been exposed to more sustainable living.
