1.Gary Oldman in Leon
2.Rosamund Pike - Gone Girl
3.John Travolta - Broken Arrow/Face Off

William Dafoe and Jack Nicholson as villains are amazing as well.

Indian movies:
1.Amrish Puri literally in any movie he was a villain including the cringe ones, only one who comes close to him somewhat is Danny Denzongpa.

Hamza ,Humaima as the Natts among recent ones.

Gary Oldman also in True Romance.

My other favs.

Christopher Lee in Dracula

Lena Headey as Cersei Lannister

Heath Ledger as Joker.

I dont watch Bollywood now but Amjad Khan as Gabbar has to be one of the best roles as a baddie in any world cinema history.

True on Amjad Khan forgot Gabbar defn the most iconic villain role in Bollywood, it's sad that his accident made him lose the best years of his life and pass away early.
His comic timing is very underrated.

For me a great villian is on which frightens the viewers just by his/her presence on screen. Amjad Khan as Gabbar managed to pull this off in every single scene. His iconic laughter which was evil in tone has never been matched since. Yes shame he passed away, one of the great actors in history.

British villians are the the most convincing and menacing - Ralph Fiennes, Sean Bean and Robert Carlyle deserve a mention. Checkout Tom Hughes from the BBC drama 'Paula.

Heath Ledger as Joker
Christoph Waltz as Colonel Hans Landa
Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lecter

Daniel Day Lewis playing Bill the Butcher in Gangs Of New York

I wouldn't call him the villain but that role was epic, that movie has the best start I have ever seen , maybe that's why climax isn't as good as the start.

I don’t like irredeemably evil ones. I like the ones who find redemption, or those you end up feeling sorry for them as the sorrow in them is revealed.

James Earl Jones as Darth Vader.

Hugo Weaving as Agent Smith.

Sir Ian McKellen as Magneto.

I agree with your points but would you say Smith has a redemption / sorrow arc? I think in the end he realises that his nihilistic approach is hopeless and a road to nowhere, but perhaps doesn’t fully come to terms with what he should have done differently.

I think his dualism and mutually dependent relationship with Neo is brilliantly done, however.

The Wachowskis said that their intention with Neo and Smith was to make Neo more systematic and machinelike as the films went on, and concurrently to make Smith more emotional and human.

In the end I felt sorry for Smith, when he realised the machines had outwitted him and ran an antivirus through Neo. Plus, he was cool. I loved his big speech as the end. He seemed genuinely confused. “Why, Mr Anderson, why, why, why?”

Joker both 2008 and 2019
Nicholas Cage in Face Off
Ashutosh Rana in literally any late 80 and 90s movie. This guy as villain gave me the creeps. His performance in Dushman and one more where he’s some sort of deranged fanatic are still stuck in my mind from when I watched them as a kid.

Ian McDiarmid

as Senator/Chancellor/Emperor Palpatine.

Jack Nicholson
Gary Oldman
Jeremy Irons
Kevin Spacey
Andy Serkis
Brad Pitt

Would have included Daniel Day Lewis but the thing I hate/admire most about him is his movies are more about acting than entertainment. He absolutely gives everything in every role he does but it seems like he is more interested in playing the character than telling the story.
